Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Fire

The kitchen suddenly felt unfamiliar.
The warm room where Clara had cooked dinner countless times.
The place where Lily had sat on the counter laughing while helping her make cookies.
The place where Mark had kissed her forehead and promised they would always be a family.
Now it felt like a trap.
A room filled with shadows.
Clara stared at the figure standing in the doorway.
The knife reflected the weak light above the kitchen table.
Her heart raced.
But she did not scream.
Because she knew that voice.
"You were never supposed to find that."
The person stepped forward.
And Clara felt the air leave her lungs.
"Mark..."
Her husband stood there.
Not angry.
Not shouting.
Just terrified.
The same terror she had seen on his face every time the truth came closer.
Clara slowly tightened her grip around the photograph.
"Why?"
Mark looked at the hidden compartment.
Then at the envelope in her hand.
"You shouldn't have opened that."
She almost laughed.
A painful, broken laugh.
"That's what you care about?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Not the fact that your daughter is upstairs sleeping while her entire life is a lie?"
Mark lowered the knife.
"I wasn't going to hurt you."
"Then why are you holding it?"
Silence.
He looked down.
As if he didn't even realize he was still holding it.
Clara stepped back.
"How long?"
Mark looked at her.
"How long what?"
"How long were you planning to keep lying to me?"
His face collapsed.
"I don't know."
"Ten years?"
"No."
"Twenty?"
"Clara..."
"No."
Her voice became stronger.
"You don't get to say my name like everything is normal."
The pain on his face was real.
But Clara no longer knew if she could trust pain.
She had seen too many people hurt while still hiding the truth.
"Tell me about the photograph."
Mark looked at it.
The fear returned.
"Where did you find that?"
"Answer me."
He remained silent.
And Clara understood.
The silence was becoming his confession.
A few hours earlier, Julian had been released temporarily after Detective Harris found inconsistencies in the fingerprint evidence.
But the questions remained.
Who had planted the evidence?
Who had written the note?
Who wanted Julian blamed?
Now Clara had found another piece of the puzzle.
A piece that led back to Mark.
Again.
"You wrote this."
She held up the photograph.
The words on the back were clear.
If anything happens, blame Julian.
Mark closed his eyes.
"I wrote it."
Clara felt her stomach drop.
"Why?"
"Because I thought something would happen."
"What?"
Mark looked toward the stairs.
Toward Lily.
"To her."
Clara shook her head.
"You were protecting Lily?"
"Yes."
"By destroying Julian?"
Mark didn't answer.
"By letting everyone believe he was guilty?"
Still silence.
Clara felt tears fall.
"Who was he?"
Mark looked confused.
"What?"
"The person you were afraid of."
A long pause.
Then Mark whispered:
"Someone from our past."
Ten years earlier.
The night of the fire.
The rain had covered every sound.
Mark stood outside the house.
His hands were shaking.
Inside was chaos.
Smoke.
Screaming.
And a truth he wanted to disappear.
He had not expected Daniel to find the documents.
He had not expected Julian to confront him.
He had not expected everything to collapse.
Then someone arrived.
Someone Mark knew.
Someone who knew all his secrets.
"You made a mistake."
The voice came from behind him.
Mark turned.
A familiar face.
A person he trusted.
A person who knew exactly how desperate he was.
"I can fix this."
The person looked at the burning house.
"But you have to make a choice."
"What choice?"
The person smiled.
"Your life..."
A pause.
"Or theirs."
Back in the present, Clara stared at Mark.
"Who?"
Mark looked away.
"I can't."
Her expression hardened.
"Why?"
"Because if I tell you, Lily is in danger."
Clara froze.
"You are still doing this."
"Doing what?"
"Using fear to control everyone."
Mark looked hurt.
"I'm trying to protect you."
"No."
Her voice became quiet.
"You're trying to protect yourself."
The words hit him.
Because they were true.
Suddenly, a sound came from upstairs.
A scream.
"Lily!"
Clara ran.
Mark followed.
They reached Lily's bedroom.
The window was open.
Cold air rushed inside.
The curtains moved in the wind.
Lily was sitting on the bed.
Crying.
Clara rushed toward her.
"What happened?"
Lily pointed toward the window.
"Someone was here."
Clara looked outside.
Nothing.
Only darkness.
Mark checked the room.
Then he stopped.
On Lily's pillow was a small object.
An old bracelet.
Clara picked it up.
She recognized it immediately.
It was the bracelet from the photograph.
The one Lily had been wearing as a baby.
The one Vanessa said disappeared the night of the fire.
Mark went pale.
"No..."
Clara looked at him.
"What?"
Mark whispered:
"That was supposed to be destroyed."
The room went cold.
The next morning, Detective Harris arrived.
After seeing the bracelet, his attitude changed completely.
"This changes everything."
Clara looked at him.
"Why?"
He placed the bracelet into an evidence bag.
"Because this was never reported missing."
Vanessa, who had arrived with Daniel and Julian, stepped forward.
"It belonged to Lily."
Detective Harris nodded.
"According to records, yes."
Daniel looked confused.
"But if it survived the fire..."
Julian finished the sentence.
"Someone took it."
Everyone became silent.
Someone had entered the house.
Someone had taken evidence.
Someone had been watching them.
Detective Harris looked at Mark.
"We need the name."
Mark said nothing.
"Mr. Mark."
Still nothing.
Then Daniel stepped forward.
"I know."
Everyone looked at him.
"You do?"
Daniel nodded slowly.
"I remembered something."
The room became quiet.
"The night of the fire..."
He looked at Julian.
"You weren't the only person there."
Julian frowned.
"What?"
Daniel looked at Mark.
"There was another man."
Mark's face changed.
"Daniel..."
"No."
Daniel's voice shook.
"I remember now."
He closed his eyes.
"A man came into the house."
"Who?"
Daniel opened his eyes.
And whispered:
"The man who called himself our uncle."
Vanessa looked confused.
"We don't have an uncle."
Daniel shook his head.
"Not ours."
He looked at Mark.
"His."
Everyone turned.
Toward Mark.
"Your uncle."
Mark froze.
Because there was only one person who fit that description.
A person who had disappeared after the fire.
A person everyone thought had left the country.
A person who knew the entire family's secrets.
Julian whispered:
"Victor."
The name changed everything.
Detective Harris immediately wrote it down.
"Who is Victor?"
Mark looked terrified.
"My father's brother."
"And where is he now?"
Mark stared at the floor.
Nobody spoke.
Then his answer came.
"He died."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
Everyone turned.
Daniel's face was pale.
"He didn't."
"How do you know?"
Daniel whispered:
"Because he was the person who called me yesterday."
The room froze.
Clara felt a chill.
The voice.
The warning.
The person behind the fire.
Still alive.
Then Daniel looked at Mark.
And said the words that destroyed the last remaining secret.
"Victor didn't want Lily."
A pause.
"He wanted what was hidden inside the company documents."
Julian frowned.
"What documents?"
Daniel looked at Clara.
"The documents that prove Mark didn't cause the fire."
Everyone became silent.
Daniel continued:
"They prove something much worse."
Clara whispered:
"What?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Mark was being framed."
A painful silence followed.
Because after everything...
The man they thought was the villain...
Might have been another victim.
And somewhere out there...
May you like
The real person behind the fire was watching them.
