Chapter 13: The Daughter Who Was Lost Twice

The words on the paper refused to disappear.

The child's identity cannot be confirmed as Lily.

Clara stared at the sentence.

Again.

And again.

As if reading it enough times would somehow change the meaning.

But it didn’t.

The ink stayed the same.

The truth stayed the same.

Her hands began to shake.

"No..."

The sound came out like a whisper.

"No, that’s not possible."

She looked at Lily.

Her little girl.

The child who was sitting beside her, holding her stuffed rabbit.

The child who still didn’t understand why every adult in the room looked devastated.

Clara dropped the paper onto the table.

"Tell me this is wrong."

Detective Harris looked at her with sympathy.

"We need more testing."

"More testing?"

Her voice cracked.

"You’re telling me after six years of raising my daughter, you don't know who she is?"

Nobody answered.

Because nobody had an answer.

Vanessa stood frozen.

Her eyes never left Lily.

Not because she doubted the child.

Because she was remembering.

Memories she had buried.

Memories she had spent years trying to escape.

"I remember the room."

Everyone looked at her.

Mark slowly turned.

"What room?"

Vanessa's face became pale.

"The nursery."

She closed her eyes.

"The night before the fire."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Mom?"

Vanessa whispered:

"There were two cribs."

The room became silent.

Clara felt her chest tighten.

"Two?"

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes."

She looked at Lily.

"Two babies."

Daniel stared.

"But I only remember Lily."

"Because you were young."

Vanessa touched her forehead.

"You didn't know everything."

She took a shaky breath.

"One baby was mine."

She looked at Lily.

"The other..."

Her voice broke.

"Was someone else's."

The room went silent.

Victor watched carefully.

Like he was waiting for this exact moment.

Detective Harris looked at him.

"You knew."

Victor smiled slightly.

"I knew many things."

"Who was the other baby?"

Victor didn't answer.

Vanessa did.

"The child belonged to my sister."

Everyone froze.

"My sister?"

Vanessa nodded.

"She died shortly after giving birth."

Clara looked confused.

"Then why was the baby in your house?"

Vanessa looked down.

"Because I adopted her."

Daniel looked shocked.

"You never told us?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"I wanted to."

Her voice trembled.

"But after Lily was born, I was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

Vanessa looked at Mark.

"Of losing everything."

The truth slowly unfolded.

Ten years earlier, before the fire, Vanessa had secretly adopted her sister’s baby.

A child who had no one else.

A child she loved as her own.

Her name was never recorded publicly.

No official documents.

No outside connection.

Only family knew.

And then came the fire.

The night that destroyed everything.

Two babies.

Two identities.

One terrible mistake.

"When the fire happened..."

Vanessa whispered.

"I found Lily's crib first."

She looked at Clara.

"I thought she was my only child left."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"And the other baby?"

Vanessa looked terrified.

"I don't know."

Victor smiled.

"That's the secret."

Everyone looked at him.

"You knew where the baby went."

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

Detective Harris stepped forward.

"Where?"

Victor leaned back.

"Somewhere safe."

Clara’s expression hardened.

"You mean somewhere you controlled."

Victor smiled.

"You always were clever."

Mark suddenly stood.

"Enough."

Everyone turned.

His face was full of regret.

"Stop making her suffer."

Clara looked at him.

"Her?"

Mark looked at Lily.

"The child."

Clara's eyes filled with anger.

"You had ten years to tell me."

Mark looked away.

"I thought I was protecting her."

"You keep saying that."

Her voice trembled.

"But every choice you made hurt her."

Mark had no response.

Because it was true.

Later that day, Clara sat beside Lily in a quiet hospital room.

The little girl was drawing.

A family again.

But this time, Clara noticed something.

She had drawn herself holding Lily’s hand.

Not Vanessa.

Not Mark.

Not anyone else.

Just Clara.

"You know something?"

Clara whispered.

Lily looked up.

"What?"

"You are still my daughter."

The little girl smiled.

"Of course."

Clara felt tears forming.

"Even if people say things?"

Lily frowned.

"What things?"

Clara smiled sadly.

"Nothing."

She hugged her.

Because no test could erase six years of love.

No secret could remove every bedtime story.

Every hug.

Every "I love you."

Outside the room, Daniel stood with Julian.

Neither spoke for a while.

Finally, Daniel said:

"You still think I died."

Julian looked at him.

"What?"

"That night."

Daniel looked down.

"You said you saw me die."

Julian became quiet.

"I thought I did."

Daniel nodded.

"But what if you were wrong?"

Julian looked at him.

"What are you saying?"

Daniel took out an old piece of paper.

A document.

"I found this in Victor's files."

Julian read it.

His expression changed.

"What is this?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Your medical report."

Julian frowned.

"From the fire?"

Daniel nodded.

Julian read carefully.

Then stopped.

Because the report showed something impossible.

A patient.

Unknown identity.

Severe injuries.

Transferred the same night.

But the patient's age...

Was not his.

It belonged to Daniel.

Julian looked up.

"No..."

Daniel whispered:

"We may have been wrong about everything."

That night, Clara received another message.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

Her heart stopped.

It was a picture of a young girl.

About the same age as Lily.

Standing beside Victor.

Below the picture was a message.

"You raised one daughter."

Another message appeared.

"But the other one is still waiting for her mother."

Clara felt cold.

Because the photograph proved one thing.

The second child was alive.

And Victor had her.

The next morning, the police searched Victor’s properties.

But he was gone.

Again.

Only one thing remained.

A note on the table.

Written in black ink.

"You wanted the truth."

"Now come find it."

"The missing daughter is where the fire began."

Everyone stared at the message.

Daniel looked at Julian.

"The old house."

Julian nodded.

The place where everything started.

The place where everything was buried.

Clara looked at Lily.

Then at the photograph.

She knew what she had to do.

She had spent ten years protecting one child.

Now she had to find another.

Because somewhere in the ruins of the past...

May you like

A little girl was still waiting.
