Chapter 12: The Child Hidden From the World

The café became unbearably quiet.

Victor’s final words remained hanging in the air.

"Lily was never the only survivor of that fire."

Clara felt as if the entire world had shifted beneath her feet.

Again.

Every time she thought she had reached the end of the nightmare, another hidden door opened.

Another secret appeared.

Another piece of her daughter’s life was stolen from her.

She looked at Lily.

The little girl sat beside Daniel, holding her necklace tightly.

She looked frightened.

Confused.

Too young to understand why so many adults were looking at her like she was the answer to a question she never asked.

Clara immediately moved closer and pulled her daughter into her arms.

"Nobody is taking you anywhere."

Her voice was firm.

No matter what happened.

No matter who told the truth.

Lily was still her daughter.

Victor watched them.

"You still don't understand."

Clara glared at him.

"Then explain."

Victor smiled.

"That necklace was never just a key."

He pointed toward Lily.

"It was a marker."

"A marker for what?"

"For the child who survived."

Daniel frowned.

"You're saying Lily wasn't the only one?"

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

Julian looked at him carefully.

"Who else survived?"

Victor didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Mark.

"Tell them."

Mark's face became pale.

"No."

Victor smiled.

"Still protecting the secret?"

Clara turned toward her husband.

"What secret?"

Mark looked at Lily.

Then away.

"I can't."

Clara's eyes filled with anger.

"You can't?"

Her voice shook.

"After everything, you still can't?"

Mark closed his eyes.

"I was trying to protect her."

"From what?"

He didn't answer.

Victor did.

"From the truth about her birth."

The police officers moved closer.

Detective Harris looked at Victor.

"You are going to explain everything."

Victor smiled.

"I will."

He sat down calmly.

Like he had been waiting years for this moment.

"Ten years ago, everyone thought the fire took two children."

Daniel looked at him.

"Me and Lily."

Victor nodded.

"But that wasn't the full story."

Clara held Lily tighter.

"What are you saying?"

Victor looked at the little girl.

"I'm saying Lily was not the only baby in that house."

The room froze.

Vanessa's face changed.

"No."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"No..."

Victor looked at her.

"You remember."

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't."

"Yes, you do."

Her breathing became uneven.

"Stop."

Victor continued.

"Before the fire, Vanessa had discovered something."

Everyone looked at her.

"What?"

Vanessa looked terrified.

Victor answered.

"She discovered she had another child."

The words felt impossible.

Another child.

Clara looked at Vanessa.

Then at Lily.

Then at Daniel.

The entire family history seemed to be rewriting itself.

"That's not true."

Vanessa shook her head.

"I had two children."

She pointed toward Daniel.

"And Lily."

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

"Then what are you talking about?"

Victor leaned forward.

"The child you thought died."

Silence.

Vanessa's face lost all color.

"What?"

Victor looked at Mark.

"You never told her."

Mark whispered:

"Because she couldn't handle it."

Clara stared.

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel suddenly stood.

His face had changed.

Like a memory had returned.

"The baby..."

Everyone turned toward him.

Daniel looked confused.

"I remember."

Vanessa stepped closer.

"What do you remember?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Before Lily."

A pause.

"Before the fire."

His breathing became faster.

"There was another room."

Vanessa covered her mouth.

"No..."

Daniel continued.

"A baby crying."

Clara felt a chill.

"What baby?"

Daniel opened his eyes.

"I don't know."

Victor smiled.

"Yes, you do."

Daniel looked at him.

Victor said:

"The baby was your sister."

Nobody spoke.

The information was too heavy.

Too impossible.

Detective Harris looked at Victor.

"You are saying Vanessa had another child?"

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

"And where is this child now?"

Victor looked at Lily.

Everyone followed his gaze.

Clara immediately shook her head.

"No."

Victor smiled.

"That's what everyone believed."

Mark stepped forward.

"Stop."

Victor looked at him.

"Why?"

"You promised."

The room froze.

Clara slowly turned.

"What did he promise?"

Mark looked horrified.

Victor smiled.

"Tell her."

Mark remained silent.

Victor continued.

"After the fire, Mark discovered the truth."

Clara stared at her husband.

"What truth?"

Victor looked at Lily.

"That the child everyone thought was Lily..."

A pause.

"Wasn't Lily."

The words hit like thunder.

Clara felt dizzy.

"No."

She shook her head.

"No."

She looked down at Lily.

The little girl looked exactly the same as she always had.

The same smile.

The same eyes.

The same child.

"You're lying."

Victor shrugged.

"Maybe."

Then he looked at Mark.

"But ask him."

Clara turned.

"Mark."

His face was destroyed.

Like he had been carrying this moment for ten years.

"Tell me."

A long silence.

Then Mark whispered:

"Lily wasn't found alone."

Clara's heart stopped.

"What?"

"There were two children."

Daniel looked shocked.

"Two?"

Mark nodded.

"After the fire, I found two babies."

Vanessa's hands started shaking.

"No..."

Mark continued.

"I was confused."

"One of them was Lily."

"One of them was..."

He stopped.

Clara whispered:

"Who?"

Mark looked at her.

"The child Victor took."

Everyone turned toward Victor.

Detective Harris immediately stepped forward.

"What happened to that child?"

Victor smiled.

"I saved her."

Vanessa stared.

"You stole her."

Victor ignored her.

"I gave her a life."

Clara felt sick.

"What does this have to do with Lily?"

Victor looked at the necklace.

"The necklace was meant to identify the child."

Julian frowned.

"But Lily has it."

Victor nodded.

"Exactly."

Silence.

Then Julian understood.

"Someone switched them."

Victor smiled.

"Now you understand."

Clara felt the room spinning.

"Are you saying..."

She couldn't finish.

Daniel whispered:

"The girl we thought was Lily..."

Victor nodded.

"May not be Lily."

The world stopped.

Clara looked at the child in her arms.

No.

Impossible.

She remembered every moment.

Every birthday.

Every fever.

Every night she stayed awake.

Biology didn't erase love.

But the idea that someone had changed her daughter's identity...

That was unbearable.

Lily looked up.

"Mommy?"

Clara immediately hugged her.

"I'm here."

Her voice broke.

"I'm here."

Later that night, Detective Harris ordered DNA testing.

Nobody argued.

Not anymore.

The truth had become too tangled.

The only way forward was evidence.

While they waited, Clara sat alone with Lily.

Julian approached.

"I'm sorry."

She looked at him.

"For what?"

"For all of this."

Clara shook her head.

"You didn't create this."

Julian looked down.

"Maybe not."

A pause.

"But I was there."

She watched him.

"You were a child too."

Julian smiled sadly.

"Sometimes adults forget that."

Hours later.

The test results arrived.

Everyone gathered in the hospital conference room.

Detective Harris held the envelope.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, he opened it.

He looked at the paper.

Then at Clara.

His expression changed.

Clara immediately knew.

Something was wrong.

"What?"

The detective hesitated.

Then handed her the result.

Her hands trembled as she read.

The first line.

The one that changed everything.

Lily is biologically related to Vanessa.

Clara released a breath.

At least that was true.

But then she saw the second line.

Her eyes widened.

Because the next sentence said:

The child's identity cannot be confirmed as Lily.

Silence.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Mark looked down.

Julian closed his eyes.

And Victor smiled.

Because the truth he had been hiding for ten years...

May you like

Had finally escaped.
