Chapter 4: The Girl Who Remembered Everything

The sentence was only seven words.
But it destroyed the room.
"I remember someone leaving me."
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Clara stared at Lily.
Her little girl.
The child she had raised since she was a baby.
The child who had always reached for her hand whenever she was afraid.
The child who still slept with a small stuffed rabbit because thunderstorms scared her.
Now that same child was standing at the top of the stairs, looking at them with terrified eyes.
Not the eyes of a child remembering a simple nightmare.
The eyes of someone carrying a memory too heavy for her age.
"Lily…"
Clara rushed toward her.
She knelt down and pulled her into her arms.
"You don't have to talk about anything."
Lily held onto her tightly.
"But I remember, Mommy."
Clara closed her eyes.
The word "Mommy" hurt in a way she never expected.
Because suddenly she wondered.
Was she still allowed to be called that?
After everything she had learned?
"Tell me what you remember."
The voice came from Vanessa.
Clara immediately looked up.
"No."
Her tone was protective.
"She is a child."
Vanessa looked at her.
For once, there was no anger in her eyes.
Only sadness.
"I know."
Her voice softened.
"That’s why I waited ten years."
Clara frowned.
"You attacked me today."
Vanessa looked down.
"I lost control."
"You could have hurt my daughter."
A tear rolled down Vanessa’s face.
"I know."
The answer surprised Clara.
There was no excuse.
No defense.
Only regret.
"I saw you with her."
Vanessa whispered.
"And for one second, I saw my entire life taken away again."
Mark stepped forward.
"Enough."
Vanessa turned toward him.
"No."
Her voice suddenly became sharp.
"Not anymore."
She looked around the room.
"Ten years."
She pointed at Mark.
"Ten years you let everyone believe your version of the story."
Then she looked at Clara.
"You deserve to know."
Lily sat on the couch between Clara and Julian.
Julian had brought her a glass of water.
The man who had been a stranger hours earlier now sat beside her like someone protecting a piece of his own past.
Clara noticed something.
The way Julian looked at Lily.
Not like a stranger.
Like family.
"Start from the beginning."
Clara said.
Nobody argued.
Julian nodded.
"Ten years ago, Lily was not the only child in that house."
Clara listened carefully.
"There were two children."
He looked at Vanessa.
"Daniel and Lily."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"My children."
Julian continued.
"Daniel was eight. Lily was one."
He looked at Mark.
"And Mark knew the house better than anyone."
Clara looked confused.
"Why?"
Julian hesitated.
"Because he helped build it."
The answer made Clara uncomfortable.
She had always known Mark as an ordinary man.
A businessman.
A father.
A husband.
Not someone connected to a tragedy.
"That night, the fire wasn't an accident."
Clara’s eyes widened.
"What?"
Mark immediately spoke.
"That's not true."
Julian ignored him.
"The fire started after the argument."
"What argument?"
Julian looked at Vanessa.
"Vanessa discovered Mark had been hiding financial problems."
Clara looked at her husband.
"You almost destroyed the company?"
Mark looked ashamed.
"I made mistakes."
Julian’s expression hardened.
"Your mistakes destroyed more than a company."
The room fell silent.
"The fire started."
Julian continued.
"Daniel was upstairs."
He looked at Lily.
"And Lily was in her room."
Clara held Lily tighter.
"How did you survive?"
Julian looked at the floor.
"I don't remember everything."
His fingers touched the scar on his temple.
"I remember smoke."
"I remember falling."
"I remember hearing Daniel crying."
"And then..."
He stopped.
"What?"
Clara asked softly.
"Someone pulled me out."
Everyone looked at Mark.
But Julian shook his head.
"Not him."
The room went quiet.
"Who?"
Julian looked at Vanessa.
"Her."
Vanessa looked surprised.
"I thought you were dead."
"I know."
Julian nodded.
"But you saved me."
A strange silence followed.
Because the woman everyone believed was unstable had just been revealed as someone who tried to save a child.
"What happened after that?"
Clara asked.
Julian looked at Mark.
"That is where the story changes."
Mark's face became tense.
"Julian."
"No."
Julian’s voice became cold.
"She deserves to know."
He turned back to Clara.
"When Vanessa pulled me outside, she went back inside."
"To save Daniel and Lily?"
Julian nodded.
"But she collapsed."
Clara looked at Vanessa.
"And Mark?"
Julian’s expression changed.
"Mark found Lily."
Clara looked at her husband.
"Yes."
Mark whispered.
"I found her."
"Then what happened?"
Nobody answered.
Finally, Julian spoke.
"He took her."
Clara felt a chill.
"Why?"
Mark looked broken.
"Because I thought she would die if I left her there."
"That doesn't explain why you disappeared."
Mark remained silent.
Julian answered.
"Because when he took Lily away, he made a choice."
"What choice?"
Julian looked directly at Mark.
"He chose a new life."
Clara stared.
"He changed his name."
"What?"
"He used my identity."
The room went silent.
Mark’s face collapsed.
"I didn't have a choice."
Julian laughed bitterly.
"You always say that."
Clara looked at Mark.
"Your name..."
Mark didn't respond.
Julian stepped closer.
"His real name isn't Mark."
Clara felt her heartbeat slow.
"What is it?"
Julian looked at her.
"Julian."
The room froze.
Clara looked between the two brothers.
"No."
She shook her head.
"No, that’s impossible."
Julian nodded.
"That's why it worked."
Mark whispered:
"I was trying to protect her."
Clara turned toward him.
"By stealing your brother's identity?"
"I was afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
Mark looked at Lily.
"That Vanessa would lose control."
Vanessa immediately shouted:
"Because you made me lose everything!"
Her voice cracked.
"You took my daughter."
Mark looked at her.
"I saved Lily."
"No."
Vanessa shook her head.
"You saved yourself."
A few minutes later, Detective Harris arrived.
He had been assigned to investigate the attack earlier.
But after hearing what happened, he requested everyone remain at the station until the truth was clear.
He placed several files on the table.
"I need everyone to understand something."
The detective looked serious.
"This is no longer just an assault case."
He opened the first file.
"This involves identity fraud, missing persons, and possible evidence tampering."
Clara looked at Mark.
"Evidence tampering?"
Detective Harris nodded.
"The original investigation from ten years ago has problems."
Julian crossed his arms.
"What kind of problems?"
"The accident report."
The detective opened another folder.
"The names were changed."
Clara felt cold.
"What?"
"The official records say Julian died."
He looked at Julian.
"But another document shows someone with the same injuries survived."
He placed the paper down.
"The survivor was transferred to another hospital under a different name."
Clara looked at Mark.
"You knew."
Mark didn’t answer.
Detective Harris continued.
"Someone altered the records."
The room became silent.
Then Lily suddenly spoke.
"Mommy."
Everyone turned.
She was staring at the old photograph.
Her face had gone pale.
"That man."
She pointed at Julian.
"I remember him."
Julian slowly approached.
"What do you remember?"
Lily looked at him.
"You carried me."
His expression changed.
"You carried me outside."
A tear appeared in Julian’s eyes.
"Lily…"
"And then..."
The little girl grabbed Clara’s hand.
"Someone told me not to tell anyone."
Clara’s heart sank.
"Who told you that?"
Lily looked toward Mark.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone already knew the answer.
The little girl whispered:
"Daddy."
Mark froze.
And for the first time…
May you like
Clara saw the truth written clearly on his face.
