Chapter 6: The Brother Who Returned From the Dead

The hospital hallway had never felt so cold.
Clara still held the phone in her hand.
The screen had already gone dark.
But the voice remained.
A voice that should not exist.
A voice that had just shattered another piece of reality.
"My name is Daniel."
The sentence repeated inside Clara’s mind.
Daniel.
The missing son.
The child Vanessa had believed she lost.
The person connected to the fire.
The person Julian claimed he watched die.
Nobody spoke.
Even the sounds of the hospital seemed to disappear.
Finally, Detective Harris broke the silence.
"Who was that?"
Clara slowly looked up.
"I don't know."
Julian stared at the phone.
But his expression was not confusion.
It was fear.
Real fear.
"You said his name."
Clara looked at him.
"Yes."
Julian shook his head.
"No."
His voice became quieter.
"No, that’s impossible."
"Why?"
Julian looked toward the empty hallway.
"Because I saw him."
The words carried a terrible weight.
"I saw Daniel that night."
Ten years earlier.
The fire had turned the house into a nightmare.
Smoke covered everything.
The walls cracked.
The wooden stairs collapsed piece by piece.
Julian remembered almost nothing.
Only fragments.
Heat.
Darkness.
The sound of someone crying.
And a small hand grabbing his shirt.
Daniel.
His younger brother.
Eight years old.
Terrified.
"Don't leave me."
Those were the last words Julian remembered hearing.
Then the ceiling fell.
The world disappeared.
When he woke up days later, he was alone.
No family.
No memories.
No identity.
Everyone told him he was Daniel.
A survivor with no past.
For years, he believed them.
Until he found the truth.
Until he discovered that the person everyone called Julian...
Was actually him.
And the person everyone believed died...
Was his brother.
Daniel.
Back in the hospital, Clara looked at Julian.
"You are saying you saw him die."
Julian nodded.
"I saw him trapped."
His voice cracked.
"I tried to reach him."
Vanessa covered her mouth.
"Julian..."
"I tried."
He repeated the words.
Almost like he needed someone to believe him.
"But I couldn't."
Mark remained silent.
Too silent.
Clara noticed.
And that silence made her uneasy.
"Mark."
He looked up.
"Did you know Daniel survived?"
His expression changed.
Only for a second.
But Clara saw it.
A flicker.
A reaction.
"You knew."
Mark immediately shook his head.
"No."
"You hesitated."
"I was shocked."
Julian stepped forward.
"He's lying."
Mark looked angry.
"You don't know that."
"I know you."
The two brothers stared at each other.
Ten years of hatred standing between them.
Then Detective Harris spoke.
"We need to find out who made that call."
He turned toward Clara.
"Did the person say anything else?"
Clara thought.
"He told me to get Lily away from Mark."
Everyone became quiet.
Detective Harris looked at Mark.
"Why would someone say that?"
Mark didn't answer.
And that was becoming the most terrifying pattern of the night.
An hour later, police officers searched the area around the hospital.
No sign of Daniel.
No cameras showing anyone entering.
No witnesses.
It was as if a ghost had called Clara.
But Detective Harris found something.
A small envelope had been left under Clara’s car windshield.
Inside was a photograph.
Clara looked at it.
Then her hands started shaking.
It was a picture of the house.
The house from ten years ago.
The night of the fire.
On the back was a message.
"The fire was never an accident."
Julian stared at the photo.
"I knew it."
Mark looked at him.
"You don't know anything."
Julian turned.
"Then explain this."
Mark said nothing.
Clara looked between them.
"What are you hiding?"
No answer.
Her patience broke.
"Enough!"
Her voice echoed through the parking area.
"I have spent ten years trusting you."
She looked at Mark.
"I trusted you with my daughter."
Then she looked at Julian.
"I trusted you because you saved us."
Finally, she looked at Vanessa.
"I even tried to understand you."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"But all of you keep saying there is more."
She held up the photograph.
"So tell me."
"What really happened?"
For the first time, Vanessa spoke calmly.
"Daniel was never supposed to be there."
Everyone looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
Vanessa looked at the picture.
"That night, Daniel was supposed to stay with my sister."
Julian frowned.
"No."
Vanessa shook her head.
"Yes."
Her voice trembled.
"He came home early."
Clara felt a chill.
"Why?"
Vanessa looked at Mark.
"Because someone called him."
Everyone turned.
"Who?"
Vanessa didn't answer.
Mark did.
"I don't know."
Julian stared at him.
"You do."
"No."
"You always knew more than you admitted."
Mark’s hands clenched.
"I was trying to protect everyone."
Julian laughed.
"That excuse has destroyed enough lives."
Suddenly, Clara’s phone rang again.
Everyone froze.
Same unknown number.
Detective Harris motioned for her to answer.
She pressed the button.
"Hello?"
This time, the voice was clearer.
A man.
Older.
Exhausted.
"Clara."
Her heart raced.
"Daniel?"
A pause.
"Yes."
Julian stepped closer.
"Where are you?"
The voice went silent.
Then:
"Julian?"
Everyone froze.
The man on the phone knew his name.
Julian grabbed the phone.
"Who are you?"
A long silence.
Then the answer:
"The brother you left behind."
Julian’s face changed.
"I never left you."
The voice became emotional.
"You did."
"No."
"You ran out of that house."
Julian’s breathing became heavier.
"I tried to save you."
"But you saved yourself."
The words hit Julian like a punch.
Clara watched his face.
For the first time, she saw doubt.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Doubt.
The voice continued.
"Julian..."
"What?"
"You need to know something."
"What?"
"The man you call your brother..."
Everyone looked at Mark.
"He wasn't the only one who lied."
The call became distorted.
Then Daniel whispered:
"Vanessa knows the truth."
The line went dead.
Everyone turned toward Vanessa.
Her face had lost all color.
Clara immediately noticed.
"You know something."
Vanessa looked away.
"No."
"Vanessa."
"No!"
Her voice broke.
For a moment, she looked like the angry woman from the street.
Then she looked like a mother who had been carrying unbearable pain.
"I thought he was dead."
Julian stepped closer.
"Who?"
Vanessa whispered:
"Daniel."
A tear fell.
"But someone came to me three days after the fire."
Nobody moved.
"Someone told me my son survived."
Clara held her breath.
"Who?"
Vanessa looked directly at Mark.
And the answer changed everything.
"Your husband."
The world went silent.
Mark looked horrified.
"That's not true."
Vanessa shook her head.
"You came to me."
"You told me Daniel was alive."
"And then you told me if I wanted to see him again..."
Her voice cracked.
"I had to disappear."
Clara stared at Mark.
"What?"
Mark stepped back.
"No."
Vanessa pointed at him.
"You threatened me."
"You said if I went to the police..."
She covered her mouth.
"I would never see my son again."
Clara felt sick.
The man she loved.
The father of her child.
The person she trusted most.
Was becoming someone she no longer recognized.
Mark whispered:
"You're lying."
Then a voice came from behind them.
Everyone turned.
A man stood at the entrance of the parking area.
Older.
Tired.
Carrying years of pain in his eyes.
He looked directly at Vanessa.
Then Julian.
Then Mark.
And finally Clara.
"I wish I was lying."
The man took one step forward.
May you like
"My name is Daniel."
