Chapter 8: The Betrayal That Saved His Life

For fifteen years, I knew exactly where Daniel Frey stood.

Always on my right.

Always three steps behind.

Never too close.

Never too far.

A perfect distance for a man whose job was to protect me.

Or watch me.

The difference between those two things had become impossible to recognize.

I stared at him.

Daniel did not move.

He did not ask what my father said.

He did not pretend not to understand.

That bothered me more than anything.

A man with nothing to hide would have questions.

Daniel had silence.

And silence was the language of people carrying secrets.

"Did Adrian call you before?"

The question surprised him.

"No."

"Did he contact you today?"

"No."

"Are you lying?"

A pause.

"No."

I studied his face.

The old Daniel would have answered instantly.

The old Daniel was prepared for every conversation.

This Daniel was tired.

"Then why do you look like you already know what is coming?"

His eyes moved away.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

"Because your father is right."

The room became colder.

Alexei stepped forward.

"Daniel."

But Daniel raised a hand.

"No."

He looked at me.

"It's time."

I hated those words.

Because every person who had betrayed me seemed to use them.

It's time.

It's time you knew.

It's time you understood.

It's time for the truth.

Everyone always decided when I was ready for my own life.

"Time for what?"

Daniel reached inside his coat.

Every person in the room reacted.

Security outside the door moved.

Weapons were raised.

But I stopped them.

Because Daniel had carried a gun near me for fifteen years.

If he wanted me dead...

I would already be dead.

He removed a small envelope.

Not a weapon.

An envelope.

He placed it on the table.

"This belongs to you."

I did not touch it.

"What is it?"

"Something I was ordered to give you if the situation reached this point."

"Ordered by who?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Your mother."

That answer stopped me.

Again.

Everyone had a connection to Elena Voss.

Everyone except me.

The woman who disappeared from my life had somehow continued moving pieces across the board long after she vanished.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

A recent photograph.

Not old.

Not faded.

Recent.

My eyes narrowed.

The picture showed a man standing outside a building.

An older man.

Gray hair.

Black coat.

I knew him.

Not personally.

But I knew him.

Because his face appeared on the list of The Circle.

One of the most powerful men in the world.

A man who had attended charity events.

Shaken hands with presidents.

Given speeches about morality.

The name beneath the photograph made my stomach tighten.

Richard Hale.

CEO.

Philanthropist.

Public hero.

Secret member of The Circle.

"What is this?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"The man who controls everything."

Alexei looked at the photograph.

"Impossible."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"That's what makes him dangerous."

I looked at him.

"You knew?"

Daniel nodded.

"Not everything."

"Enough."

"Yes."

Anger rose inside me.

Not explosive.

Controlled.

The dangerous kind.

"How many times?"

Daniel looked confused.

"What?"

"How many times did you know something and decide I didn't deserve to know?"

His expression changed.

"I was protecting you."

I laughed.

"Everyone says that."

Daniel accepted the criticism.

"Maybe everyone is wrong."

That surprised me.

"Maybe?"

He looked at the floor.

"Stellan, I spent fifteen years trying to protect you from becoming your father."

The sentence hit harder than expected.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked at Alexei.

Then Viktor.

Then Emma.

"Your father believed power was the only thing that mattered."

A pause.

"I believe he was wrong."

He looked at me.

"But I also believe the world he fought against is real."

I said nothing.

Daniel continued.

"The reason I stayed beside you was not because Adrian ordered me."

"Then why?"

"Because Elena asked me."

Again.

My mother.

Always my mother.

"She told me something."

"What?"

Daniel's voice became softer.

"She said if you ever discovered the truth, you would have two choices."

I waited.

"You could become the man who hurt you..."

A pause.

"Or the man she believed you could be."

The room went silent.

Emma looked at me.

Like she was listening to something beyond words.

"What happens now?"

I asked.

Daniel looked toward the window.

"Now The Circle knows we have the list."

"And?"

"They will come."

"How many?"

Daniel shook his head.

"Everyone."

I almost smiled.

"Good."

Everyone looked at me.

For years, people feared my name.

But recently, I realized something.

Fear was not enough.

My father had fear.

My enemies had fear.

The Circle had fear.

And they were all still trapped.

I needed something different.

Something my father lost.

Something my mother believed I had.

Truth.

"We go after them."

Alexei looked at me.

"You don't understand who you're fighting."

I looked back.

"No."

I picked up the photograph.

"But they don't understand who they awakened."

For the first time, Alexei smiled.

Not because he enjoyed violence.

Because he recognized something.

A decision.

A transformation.

The same moment every powerful person eventually reached.

The moment where running stopped being an option.

Three hours later, we discovered the first betrayal.

Not from Daniel.

Not from Alexei.

From someone else.

Someone closer.

My security system showed an unauthorized access attempt.

Someone had entered my private database.

Someone had downloaded every file related to The Circle.

Including the list.

The access code belonged to one person.

My chief financial officer.

Marcus Bell.

A man who had worked for me for eight years.

A man who handled billions of dollars.

A man who had never missed a meeting.

A man I trusted.

Daniel looked at the screen.

"He was working for them."

I stared at the data.

"No."

Daniel looked at me.

"No?"

"Not exactly."

I zoomed into the access records.

Marcus had not copied the files.

He had deleted them.

All of them.

Except one.

A hidden folder.

Created thirty minutes before.

Inside was a single video.

I opened it.

Marcus appeared on screen.

His face was pale.

His hands were shaking.

"Stellan..."

He looked directly into the camera.

"Please believe me."

A pause.

"They found my family."

My expression changed.

"They forced me."

The video continued.

"But I didn't give them the list."

He looked terrified.

"I gave them something else."

A pause.

"The wrong list."

Nobody spoke.

Marcus continued.

"I know they will come for me."

His eyes filled with fear.

"But before they do..."

He looked behind him.

Like someone was nearby.

"Stellan, there is something you need to know."

The video glitched.

Then his final words appeared.

"The person leading The Circle in Seattle..."

The screen froze.

The sentence remained incomplete.

Then the file corrupted.

I stared at the monitor.

"Can you recover it?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

Alexei looked at the frozen screen.

"He was interrupted."

"By who?"

Nobody answered.

Then Emma quietly spoke.

"I heard him."

Everyone turned.

"What did he say?"

She looked afraid.

Not of us.

Of the memory.

"He said..."

She swallowed.

"The person leading The Circle in Seattle is someone who sits beside you."

My eyes moved.

Slowly.

Around the room.

Alexei.

Viktor.

Daniel.

Then...

The empty chair beside me.

The chair where Marcus always sat during meetings.

The chair where someone had been sitting an hour ago.

My phone rang.

This time, the caller ID appeared.

Not unknown.

Not hidden.

A name.

MARCUS BELL

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a whisper came through.

"Stellan..."

A pause.

"I'm sorry."

My expression hardened.

"Where are you?"

A trembling breath.

"Too late."

The line went silent.

Then one final sentence.

"The person you are looking for..."

A pause.

"...has already been inside your home."

The call ended.

And for the first time since this began...

I wondered if the enemy had never been outside my circle.

Maybe they had been sitting at my table.

Drinking my coffee.

Reading my files.

May you like

Calling me friend.
