Chapter 13: The Woman Who Started the War

For several minutes after the screen went black, nobody spoke.
Not because there were no questions.
Because there were too many.
The human mind had a limit.
There was only so much impossible information a person could accept before reality started feeling like a story written by someone else.
My entire life had just been rewritten.
My mother was alive.
My father was alive.
My uncle was part of a hidden war.
Daniel had been protecting me while lying to me.
Alexei had been my enemy and my ally at the same time.
And the bomb that started everything...
Was never meant to kill me.
It was meant to save me.
I looked at the people standing around me.
Everyone had known something.
Everyone had carried a piece of the truth.
Except me.
The person at the center of the storm.
The person everyone was trying to protect.
The person nobody trusted enough to tell.
"Where is my mother?"
The question came out quietly.
Nobody answered.
That was answer enough.
I looked at Alexei.
"You know."
He remained silent.
"Alexei."
His eyes met mine.
"I know where she was."
Not where she is.
Was.
That difference cut deeper.
"Tell me."
He looked at Viktor.
The old man closed his eyes.
Like he knew this moment would come.
"Elena did not disappear alone."
I waited.
"She was taken."
The room became still.
"By who?"
Alexei looked at the screen where my father had appeared.
"The Circle."
My jaw tightened.
"But my father said she escaped."
"She did."
Alexei paused.
"Eventually."
That word bothered me.
Eventually.
A word that hid years.
"What happened?"
Alexei walked toward the window.
For the first time, he looked old.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
"Your mother discovered the truth about The Circle before anyone else."
"How?"
"Because she was not looking for power."
A pause.
"She was looking for your future."
I said nothing.
Alexei continued.
"Adrian wanted to control The Circle."
"Elena wanted to destroy it."
The difference between my parents suddenly became clear.
My father fought monsters by becoming one.
My mother fought monsters by exposing them.
Two different strategies.
Two different kinds of courage.
"So they disagreed."
"Yes."
"And that destroyed them."
Alexei shook his head.
"No."
He looked at me.
"That saved them."
I frowned.
"What?"
"Because The Circle expected Adrian to fight for control."
A pause.
"They never expected Elena to choose sacrifice."
Viktor placed a folder on the table.
"This was found in the hidden room."
I opened it.
Inside were documents written by my mother.
Plans.
Maps.
Names.
But one page stood out.
At the top:
PROJECT DAWN
"What is this?"
Daniel stepped closer.
"Your mother's plan."
I read the first lines.
The Circle survives because people believe it is untouchable.
Remove that belief.
Expose the foundation.
The structure collapses.
Simple.
Almost too simple.
But powerful.
My mother did not want to fight them.
She wanted to make them visible.
Because people like The Circle were strongest in darkness.
Light was their enemy.
Then I found another page.
A list of targets.
Not to eliminate.
To expose.
Politicians.
Executives.
Judges.
People who had hidden behind respectability.
At the bottom was one name.
Lucian Voss.
My uncle.
I looked up.
"Lucian knew about this."
Alexei nodded.
"He knew everything."
"Then why is he helping us?"
Nobody answered.
Again.
That was becoming a pattern.
I hated patterns.
Because patterns meant people were still hiding things.
That evening, Lucian contacted us.
Not through a phone.
Not through a message.
Through a video.
The same way my father had.
His face appeared on the screen.
Calm.
Confident.
"Alexander."
I stared at him.
"Lucian."
A faint smile.
"You found Project Dawn."
"You knew I would."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because Elena knew."
I felt anger rising.
"Stop using my mother's name like you understand her."
Lucian's expression changed slightly.
Not anger.
Something closer to sadness.
"I understood her better than anyone."
"No."
I stepped closer.
"You betrayed her."
Lucian was silent.
Then:
"Yes."
The answer surprised me.
No excuses.
No denial.
Just acceptance.
"I betrayed her."
A pause.
"And I have spent twenty years trying to repair what I destroyed."
I stared.
"Why?"
"Because I was wrong."
The words sounded strange coming from him.
A man who believed he understood everything.
"I thought power was the only thing that mattered."
He looked away.
"Then I watched Elena lose everything and still refuse to become like us."
Like us.
The phrase mattered.
Because he included himself.
And my father.
"And now?"
I asked.
"Now I know she was right."
The screen flickered.
Then Lucian said:
"But there is one thing you need to understand."
"What?"
"The Circle is not afraid of you because you have money."
A pause.
"They are afraid because Elena chose you."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Lucian looked directly at me.
"Your mother did not leave you an empire."
The room went silent.
"She left you a weapon."
I looked at Emma.
The girl who heard everything.
The girl who remembered voices.
Lucian continued.
"And the weapon is not something you possess."
A pause.
"It is something you become."
The screen went black.
Later that night, Emma found me alone in my office.
I was looking at the city.
The same city I once believed I controlled.
Now I understood.
Nobody controlled anything.
Everyone was just fighting for a little more time.
"You're angry."
I looked at her.
"How do you know?"
"Your breathing changed."
I almost smiled.
Almost.
"You notice everything?"
She nodded.
"Sometimes I wish I didn't."
That answer surprised me.
For the first time, I saw the burden behind her ability.
Not a gift.
A weight.
"Emma."
She looked up.
"Why did Lucian teach you?"
She was quiet for a while.
Then answered:
"Because he wanted me to remember one thing."
"What?"
She looked at me.
"Your mother said the most dangerous person in the world is not the person with the most power."
I waited.
"Who is it?"
Emma answered:
"The person who has nothing left to lose."
I looked out at Seattle.
Because I suddenly understood.
The Circle had spent twenty years trying to create monsters.
They created fear.
They created betrayal.
They created pain.
But they forgot something.
Pain could destroy people.
Or it could remove every chain holding them back.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time, I answered.
A woman's voice.
Older.
Weak.
But familiar.
My entire body froze.
Because I had heard that voice before.
Not in a recording.
Not in a memory.
In my childhood.
"Alexander."
The world stopped.
I could not breathe.
No one else spoke.
Because everyone saw my face change.
"Mother?"
A long silence.
Then a whisper.
"I'm sorry it took so long."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"Where are you?"
A pause.
Then she said:
"Somewhere your father cannot protect me anymore."
My heart sank.
"What happened?"
Her voice became urgent.
"Listen carefully."
A pause.
"Do not trust Lucian."
I looked around the room.
Everyone froze.
"Why?"
My mother's voice trembled.
"Because Lucian did not betray The Circle."
A pause.
"He became its leader."
The line went silent.
I stared at the phone.
At Emma.
At Daniel.
At Alexei.
At the people who had spent weeks helping me uncover the truth.
And suddenly...
I realized the most dangerous person in the entire story had never been hiding.
He had been guiding us.
May you like
The whole time.
