Chapter 14: The Last Move of The Circle

For several seconds, I forgot how to speak.

Not because I did not understand my mother's words.

Because I understood them too well.

Do not trust Lucian.

The man who claimed to regret everything.

The man who said he wanted to fix his mistakes.

The man who gave me the key to my childhood home.

The man who helped reveal the truth.

He had been leading The Circle.

All along.

The greatest deception was not hiding a lie.

It was hiding the truth inside another truth.

Lucian had not lied about everything.

He had simply told us enough truth to make us trust him.

And that was far more dangerous.

"Mother."

My voice finally returned.

"Where are you?"

The line remained silent.

Then I heard something.

A sound.

Not her voice.

Something behind her.

A door opening.

A chair moving.

Someone walking.

My expression changed.

"Who is there?"

Her breathing changed.

"Alexander, listen to me."

"Who is with you?"

"Do not come here."

The words were immediate.

Too immediate.

My instincts reacted.

Not because of fear.

Because of urgency.

"Where are you?"

"Alexander..."

"Where?"

A pause.

Then she whispered:

"Under the old Voss estate."

My eyes widened.

The old estate.

The same place where Lucian sent us.

The place he wanted us to find.

The place where my mother's final secret waited.

"I'll come."

"No."

Her voice became desperate.

"You don't understand."

A pause.

"He wants you to come."

The room became silent.

Everyone heard.

Everyone understood.

Lucian had expected this.

He had planned this.

My mother continued.

"He knew you would find the recordings."

"He knew you would find the key."

"He knew you would find me."

My grip tightened.

"Then why?"

A long silence.

Then:

"Because he needs you."

That answer made no sense.

"Why?"

My mother's voice became softer.

"Because The Circle is dying."

I frowned.

"What?"

"Lucian has spent twenty years building something."

A pause.

"Something bigger than your father ever imagined."

Daniel stepped closer.

"What is she saying?"

I looked at him.

"The Circle is not protecting itself anymore."

I spoke the words slowly.

"It's expanding."

My mother continued.

"Lucian believes the old world is ending."

"And he wants to create a new one."

I felt cold.

"Using what?"

A pause.

"Using you."

The call ended.

No goodbye.

No emotional reunion.

Just silence.

My mother was alive.

And she was still trying to protect me.

Even after twenty years.

I looked at everyone.

"We go."

Daniel immediately nodded.

Alexei did not.

"No."

I turned.

"No?"

Alexei looked serious.

"That is exactly what Lucian wants."

"She is my mother."

"I know."

His voice softened.

"But Lucian knows that."

That stopped me.

Because it was true.

The most dangerous weapons were not guns.

They were people you loved.

Lucian knew my weakness.

My humanity.

The thing The Circle feared.

The thing my mother believed made me different.

He would use it.

And he would expect me to come running.

But there was one thing Lucian did not understand.

I was not the same person who started this journey.

I was no longer a man chasing answers.

I was a man who understood the game.

"You are right."

Everyone looked at me.

"We don't go to Lucian."

Daniel frowned.

"Then?"

"We make him come to us."

Three hours later, we activated the plan.

The plan my mother created twenty years ago.

Project Dawn.

But not the way she intended.

Because I had learned something from my father.

Sometimes surviving required becoming unpredictable.

We leaked information.

Not everything.

Just enough.

A false message.

A false location.

A false weakness.

We wanted Lucian to believe we had found the final evidence against The Circle.

The trap was simple.

Make him think he had won.

People became careless when they believed victory was already theirs.

The response came faster than expected.

Too fast.

A message appeared on every secure device in the building.

No sender.

No location.

Just words.

You finally became your father's son.

I stared at the screen.

Lucian.

Another message appeared.

But you still have your mother's weakness.

Then:

Love.

My hands tightened.

A final message appeared.

Come alone.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"Absolutely not."

I looked at the screen.

"That's not a request."

Alexei understood.

"He wants to separate you."

"Yes."

"And?"

I looked at the photograph of my parents.

At Emma.

At the people who had risked everything.

"I go."

"No."

Daniel stepped forward.

"You know that's what he wants."

"I know."

"Then why?"

I looked at him.

"Because he also expects me to refuse."

The room became quiet.

Daniel stared.

Then slowly understood.

"You want him to think he still controls you."

Exactly.

The most dangerous weapon against someone who controlled everything...

Was making them believe they still did.

The location was the abandoned Voss estate.

The same place where my childhood ended.

The same place where my mother disappeared.

The same place where Lucian wanted me.

I arrived alone.

Or at least that was what Lucian believed.

The house stood in the darkness.

Broken.

Forgotten.

But waiting.

The front door opened before I touched it.

Inside, the house was not abandoned.

It was restored.

Perfect.

Like someone had preserved it.

Like someone had been living inside a memory.

I walked through the hallway.

Past old photographs.

Past rooms from my childhood.

Then I reached the living room.

A man stood beside the fireplace.

Lucian.

Older.

Calm.

Smiling.

"I knew you would come."

I looked around.

"Where is my mother?"

Lucian smiled.

"Still the first question."

"What did you expect?"

"I expected anger."

A pause.

"Your father had anger."

"And you?"

I looked at him.

"What do I have?"

Lucian walked closer.

"Disappointment."

That answer surprised me.

Because it was accurate.

"I spent twenty years watching you."

He continued.

"You became everything Adrian wanted."

"No."

I shook my head.

"I became everything he feared."

Lucian smiled.

"Good."

He walked toward a table.

On it was a folder.

"The Circle has existed for generations."

"I know."

"No."

He shook his head.

"You know the name."

A pause.

"You do not know the purpose."

He opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Plans.

Blueprints.

A new symbol.

A new organization.

"The world is changing, Alexander."

Lucian looked at me.

"Governments are weak."

"Corporations are controlled."

"People are afraid."

He spread his arms.

"The old system is collapsing."

"And you think you can fix it?"

"No."

His answer was immediate.

"I think I can replace it."

I stared at him.

There it was.

The truth.

Not greed.

Not revenge.

Something worse.

Belief.

Lucian truly believed he was saving the world.

"What do you need me for?"

He smiled.

"Because your father built an empire."

A pause.

"Your mother built a conscience."

Another pause.

"And you..."

His eyes sharpened.

"You are the only person who has both."

The room became silent.

"You want me to lead."

"Yes."

I almost laughed.

"You destroyed my family."

"No."

Lucian looked at me.

"Your family destroyed itself trying to stop me."

Then a sound came from behind.

A voice.

A voice I had waited my entire life to hear.

"He's lying."

I turned.

A woman stood in the doorway.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

My mother.

Elena Voss.

My breath stopped.

Lucian's smile disappeared.

Because for the first time...

He looked afraid.

And I realized something.

The man who controlled The Circle.

The man who manipulated everyone.

The man who planned every move.

Had one weakness.

The one person he never managed to control.

May you like

Elena Voss.
