Chapter 12: The Plan Hidden for Twenty Years

The recording ended.

But nobody moved.

The forest around us remained silent.

The kind of silence that did not feel empty.

It felt like the world itself was waiting.

Waiting for me to understand.

Waiting for me to accept something I had spent my entire life refusing.

My parents did not abandon me.

They sacrificed themselves.

But that did not make it easier.

Sometimes the truth hurt more than a lie.

A lie gave you someone to blame.

The truth forced you to understand.

I held the recorder in my hand.

A small device that had just destroyed the foundation of my anger.

For twenty years, I had built my identity around one belief.

My parents left me.

Now I had to face something worse.

They left me because they loved me.

And love was much harder to hate.

"Play it again."

Everyone looked at me.

Daniel frowned.

"Stellan..."

"Play it again."

He understood.

Not because he agreed.

Because he knew what it meant.

When someone spends twenty years searching for an answer, one recording is never enough.

You listen again.

And again.

You search for hidden words.

Hidden meanings.

The things people say without realizing they are saying them.

Daniel pressed the button.

The recording played.

Again.

My father's voice.

"You can't do this, Elena."

Fear.

Real fear.

Not weakness.

Fear of losing someone.

My mother's voice.

"We have no choice."

Then the sentence.

The one that mattered.

We are going to make him the one person they cannot predict.

I stopped the recording.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

I looked at Alexei.

"You knew about this."

He looked away.

"Not everything."

"Enough."

A pause.

"Enough to understand your parents had a plan."

"What plan?"

Alexei looked at the ruins around us.

"To remove every chain they could place on you."

I laughed quietly.

"By destroying my life?"

"No."

His voice became serious.

"By making sure nobody owned you."

I looked at him.

"The Circle owns people through weakness."

He continued.

"Money."

"Power."

"Fear."

"Family."

"Promises."

"Secrets."

A pause.

"Your parents removed all of them."

I shook my head.

"Family?"

Alexei nodded.

"Your father knew the moment The Circle discovered you cared about someone, they would use that person against you."

I thought about everyone.

My employees.

My allies.

The people close to me.

Everyone I trusted.

Everyone who could become a weapon.

"So they made me alone."

Alexei did not answer.

Because that was exactly what they did.

The journey back to Seattle was silent.

Nobody spoke about the recording.

Nobody knew what to say.

Because the person everyone thought was searching for revenge...

Was actually searching for forgiveness.

When we reached the city, everything had changed.

Not outside.

Inside.

The buildings looked the same.

The streets looked the same.

But I was different.

For the first time, I was not chasing the truth.

The truth was chasing me.

Back at Voss Tower, Daniel placed a folder on my desk.

"What's this?"

"Your father's final instructions."

I looked at him.

"Final?"

Daniel nodded.

"He gave it to me before he disappeared."

I opened it.

Inside was a document.

No title.

No signature.

Only one sentence at the top.

If Alexander chooses revenge, he loses.

I continued reading.

If Alexander chooses truth, he survives.

Below that was a list.

Not names.

Actions.

Steps.

A plan.

A twenty-year plan.

My father had prepared everything.

The businesses.

The security systems.

The people around me.

Even Daniel.

Everything had a purpose.

But then I saw something that made me stop.

A name.

Marcus Bell.

I looked at Daniel.

"Marcus was part of the plan?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"But he betrayed me."

"No."

Daniel's answer was immediate.

"He was protecting you."

I stared.

"Explain."

Daniel opened another file.

Inside was Marcus's full history.

Not the public one.

The real one.

His family.

His debts.

His connections.

His recruitment by The Circle.

"They forced him to work for them years ago."

"And my father knew?"

"Yes."

"Then why keep him near me?"

Daniel looked at the document.

"Because Adrian believed everyone deserved a chance to choose differently."

That sounded like my mother.

Not my father.

Maybe I had spent my whole life seeing only one side of him.

The ruthless side.

The side necessary for survival.

But there was another side.

A side hidden from everyone.

Even me.

Then the building lost power.

Again.

But this time, nobody panicked.

Because we expected it.

The lights went dark.

Security alarms remained silent.

Too silent.

Daniel immediately reached for his weapon.

"Not another attack."

I looked at him.

"Then what?"

He stared at the security monitor.

The screen turned on by itself.

One image appeared.

A live video.

A room.

An old room.

And sitting inside it...

Was my father.

Adrian Voss.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian looked directly into the camera.

"Hello, Alexander."

I stepped closer.

The screen flickered.

"Father."

His expression changed.

A mixture of relief and sadness.

"You found Elena's message."

"Yes."

A long silence.

Then:

"I'm sorry."

The words surprised me.

Not because they were unexpected.

Because they were simple.

My entire life had been complicated.

And the first honest thing my father gave me was an apology.

"You should have told me."

"I wanted to."

"But?"

He looked away.

"But every time I tried, someone died."

The room became quiet.

"Who?"

"The people who tried to help me."

I looked at Daniel.

Then Alexei.

Then Viktor.

"The Circle?"

Adrian nodded.

"They are closer than you think."

"Who leads them?"

My father's expression became serious.

"You already know."

I frowned.

"No."

"Yes."

A pause.

"The person who has been guiding every event since the beginning."

My mind raced.

The bomb.

The attack.

Marcus.

Lucian.

The photograph.

The secrets.

Then Adrian said the words that made everyone freeze.

"The person who ordered the attack on your plane..."

A pause.

"...was not trying to kill you."

I waited.

"They were trying to save you."

I looked at the screen.

"What?"

Adrian leaned forward.

"Because if you had boarded that aircraft..."

His voice became low.

"You would have been killed by the real bomb."

Everyone froze.

"The one your enemy planted."

I stared.

"Then what was the bomb Emma warned about?"

My father's eyes moved slightly.

Like he was afraid of the answer.

"The bomb Emma found was planted by someone protecting you."

Silence.

Someone protecting me.

Not attacking me.

A terrifying thought appeared.

The entire beginning of this nightmare...

Was not an assassination attempt.

It was a rescue.

"Who planted it?"

My father looked directly at me.

And answered:

"Your mother."

Nobody breathed.

The screen flickered.

"My mother?"

Adrian nodded.

"Elena knew someone inside The Circle would try to kill you."

"She planted a warning."

"She knew Emma would hear the conversation."

"She knew Viktor would be there."

"She knew Daniel would react."

My hands tightened.

"Then why didn't anyone tell me?"

Adrian looked devastated.

"Because the moment you knew the truth..."

A pause.

"The Circle would know you were ready."

The screen went black.

The power returned.

Nobody spoke.

Because one impossible truth had replaced another.

The enemy was not the person who attacked me.

The enemy was the person who wanted me to believe I was under attack.

And somewhere in Seattle...

Someone had spent twenty years moving every piece on the board.

May you like

Waiting for the final move.
