CHAPTER 6: THE BROTHER WHO CHOSE THE LIE

For twenty years, Adrian Vale believed betrayal had one face.

The face of strangers.

Competitors.

Enemies waiting outside the walls of his empire.

He never imagined betrayal would have the same eyes as the person who held his hand when he was a child.

The person who taught him how to survive.

The person who promised him:

"No matter what happens, I will protect you."

Damian Vale.

His brother.

His protector.

His greatest enemy.

The words remained hanging in the abandoned warehouse.

"The person Elena was afraid of... was me."

Adrian didn't move.

Didn't speak.

He simply stared.

Trying to understand how the man standing in front of him could be both the person who saved him...

And the person who destroyed him.

Clara watched silently.

She didn't understand the entire story.

But she understood enough.

The man she had believed was dangerous...

Was the man Adrian loved like family.

"Explain."

Adrian's voice was quiet.

But Damian knew that quiet was more dangerous than anger.

Because Adrian wasn't reacting.

He was calculating.

Damian sat down on an old wooden crate.

For the first time, the powerful businessman looked defeated.

"I knew this day would come."

Adrian remained standing.

"You had twenty years."

A pause.

"Twenty years to tell me."

Damian lowered his eyes.

"I tried."

"No."

Adrian shook his head.

"You protected the lie."

Damian closed his eyes.

"Yes."

The answer surprised Adrian.

No excuses.

No denial.

Just guilt.

"Why?"

Damian looked at him.

"Because I was a coward."

The honesty was unexpected.

Adrian almost wished Damian would lie.

Anger was easier.

Hatred was easier.

But seeing regret made everything more complicated.

"Start from the beginning."

Damian took a deep breath.

"Twenty years ago, Elena discovered something hidden in our family records."

"The stolen money."

"Yes."

"The fake companies."

"Yes."

"The people my father destroyed."

Damian nodded.

"But that wasn't the worst part."

Adrian frowned.

"What was worse?"

Damian looked at Clara.

"Your father didn't create that system alone."

Silence.

Adrian understood.

"You mean..."

Damian nodded.

"Your grandfather started it."

The words felt impossible.

The Vale family.

Three generations.

An empire built on secrets.

"But why would Elena care?"

Damian looked surprised.

"Because Elena wasn't just your girlfriend."

Adrian stared.

"She was a journalist."

The revelation hit him.

A journalist.

Adrian remembered.

She always asked questions.

Always investigated.

Always looked deeper than everyone else.

He thought that was what made her special.

Now he realized it was also what made her dangerous.

"She found documents showing the Vale family had destroyed hundreds of families to gain control of their businesses."

Damian continued.

"She wanted to expose everything."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"And you stopped her."

Damian looked down.

"Yes."

"Why?"

The question carried twenty years of pain.

Damian's voice became low.

"Because your father threatened you."

Adrian froze.

"What?"

"After Elena discovered everything, your father found out."

Damian looked at him.

"He knew she would come to you."

"And?"

"He knew you would choose her."

A bitter smile appeared.

"Because unlike him... you still had a conscience."

Adrian said nothing.

"Your father gave me a choice."

Damian's hands tightened.

"He told me if I helped Elena disappear, you would lose everything."

"And if you refused?"

Damian looked away.

"He would destroy you."

The warehouse fell silent.

Adrian tried to process it.

"My father threatened his own son?"

Damian nodded.

"He wasn't afraid of losing money."

A pause.

"He was afraid of losing control."

Adrian looked at Clara.

Then back at Damian.

"What did you do?"

Damian swallowed.

"I met Elena."

Adrian's expression changed.

"You lied to her too."

"Yes."

"What did you tell her?"

Damian looked broken.

"I told her you never loved her."

The words cut deeper than Adrian expected.

Because suddenly he remembered.

The last conversation with Elena.

Her eyes.

Her expression.

The pain on her face.

She wasn't angry.

She looked destroyed.

"She believed you."

Damian nodded.

"Yes."

"And then?"

"I took her away."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Where?"

"I arranged a new identity."

"For her?"

"For her and Clara."

Adrian stopped.

"Wait."

His eyes moved toward the little girl.

"Clara was already born?"

Damian nodded.

"Yes."

Adrian's breathing became heavier.

"So when I thought Elena left me..."

"She was already pregnant."

The truth hit him harder than anything before.

All those years.

All those birthdays.

All those moments he missed.

His daughter growing up somewhere in the world...

Without him.

Because of a lie.

Adrian turned away.

He covered his face with one hand.

For a moment, he wasn't a billionaire.

He wasn't the man everyone feared.

He was simply a father realizing he had lost eight years he could never get back.

Clara slowly approached him.

"Mr. Adrian..."

He looked down.

She hesitated.

Then she held his hand.

A tiny hand.

Small.

Warm.

Real.

"I know you didn't know."

Those words almost broke him.

Because the child was comforting him.

The child who had suffered.

The child who had lost more than anyone.

Adrian looked at Damian.

"Where is Elena now?"

Damian didn't answer.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Damian."

Finally, he spoke.

"She's in a private medical facility."

"Why?"

"Because she got sick."

"What kind of sick?"

Damian looked away.

"She was poisoned."

The word changed everything.

Adrian went completely still.

"What?"

"Slowly."

"Who?"

Damian shook his head.

"We never found out."

Adrian's voice became colder.

"Never?"

Damian looked at him.

"Because the person who did it knew exactly how to hide."

Adrian felt something awaken inside him.

Not rage.

Something more dangerous.

Determination.

Someone had taken Elena from him.

Someone had stolen his daughter.

Someone had controlled his entire life.

And now that person knew Adrian had found the truth.

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

It wasn't Damian's.

It wasn't Adrian's.

It was Clara's.

The little girl looked terrified.

"My mother gave me this phone."

Adrian looked at the screen.

No name.

Unknown number.

The phone stopped ringing.

Then immediately started again.

Damian's face changed.

"Don't answer."

Adrian looked at him.

"Why?"

Damian whispered:

"Because only one person had that number."

The phone continued ringing.

Adrian picked it up.

Against Damian's warning.

"Hello?"

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then...

A woman's voice.

Weak.

Broken.

But unmistakable.

Adrian's entire body froze.

Because after twenty years...

He heard the voice of the woman he thought he had lost forever.

"Adrian..."

His hand tightened around the phone.

"Elena?"

A quiet breath came from the other side.

Then she whispered:

"Don't trust Damian."

Adrian looked at his brother.

Damian's face went pale.

The voice continued.

"He wasn't the one who betrayed us."

A pause.

"He was protecting the real person."

Adrian's heart stopped.

"Who?"

Silence.

Then Elena said the one sentence that changed everything.

"The person who destroyed our family..."

A broken breath.

"Is standing beside you right now."

The call ended.

Adrian slowly lowered the phone.

The warehouse became silent.

Three people.

Three possible truths.

And one terrible question.

Who was Elena warning him about?

Because if Damian wasn't the betrayer...

Then someone else had been hiding in the shadows for twenty years.

Someone closer.

Someone more powerful.

Someone Adrian trusted even more than his own brother.
