CHAPTER 2: THE DAUGHTER HE NEVER KNEW

Adrian Vale had faced enemies who tried to destroy his company.

He had sat across from billionaires who smiled while secretly planning his downfall.

He had watched partners betray him after years of loyalty.

But nothing had ever prepared him for three simple words.

"You are my father."

The sentence echoed inside the tiny, broken house long after the little girl stopped speaking.

Adrian stood frozen.

His eyes remained fixed on her face.

Searching.

Looking for something.

A resemblance.

A clue.

A reason to believe this was impossible.

Because it had to be impossible.

Twenty years ago, he had lost everything.

Or at least that was what he had been told.

The woman in the photograph.

The woman standing beside his younger self.

Her name was Elena Marquez.

The only woman Adrian had ever truly loved.

And the only person who knew the secret behind the scar on his wrist.

The scar that had brought him here.

His fingers moved slowly toward his left sleeve.

He pulled it back.

The small mark was still there.

A thin, unusual scar shaped almost like a crescent.

The little girl stared at it.

"That's the mark."

Adrian looked at her.

"Who taught you about this?"

"My mother."

"Your mother's name is Elena?"

The girl nodded.

"Yes."

A thousand questions exploded in Adrian's mind.

But one question was louder than all the others.

"Where is she?"

The girl's expression changed.

For the first time, she looked away.

"She's sick."

Those two words struck harder than Adrian expected.

"Sick?"

The girl nodded.

"Very sick."

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Adrian looked around again.

The broken furniture.

The cold air.

The children wearing old clothes.

This wasn't just a poor family.

This was someone he had known.

Someone he had loved.

Someone he had failed.

He turned back to the girl.

"What is your name?"

"Clara."

"Clara..."

He repeated it quietly.

The name felt strangely familiar.

"How old are you?"

"Eight."

Eight.

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

Eight years old.

That meant Elena had given birth twelve years after they supposedly separated.

But that was impossible.

Because Elena disappeared twenty years ago.

Unless...

Unless everything he believed was wrong.

"Clara," Adrian said carefully.

"When was this picture taken?"

The girl looked at the photograph.

"I don't know."

"Where did you get it?"

"Mom kept it."

"Why?"

Clara hesitated.

"She said she was waiting for the right time."

"Right time for what?"

The girl looked at him with eyes far too serious for a child.

"To tell you what happened."

Adrian felt a chill.

"What happened twenty years ago?"

The little girl didn't answer.

Instead, she walked toward an old wooden cabinet.

She opened the bottom drawer.

Inside was a small metal box covered in dust.

She carried it carefully and placed it on the table.

"My mother said I could only give this to you if I found the man with the mark."

Adrian stared at the box.

Something inside him warned him not to open it.

Some doors, once unlocked, could never be closed again.

But his hand moved anyway.

He opened the box.

Inside were documents.

Old letters.

A hospital bracelet.

And a small envelope with his name written on it.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

His heart stopped.

Because he recognized the handwriting.

Elena's handwriting.

His fingers trembled as he picked up the envelope.

Adrian.

Just his name.

Nothing else.

He opened it.

The paper inside was old.

The ink had faded.

But the words remained.

Adrian,

If you are reading this, then Clara finally found you.

I don't know how much time I have left.

I don't know if you will hate me.

I don't know if you will forgive me.

But you deserve to know the truth.

Adrian stopped reading.

His breathing became heavier.

The little girl watched him silently.

He continued.

Twenty years ago, I didn't leave you.

Someone made sure we could never find each other.

Someone who was afraid of what would happen if you learned the truth.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

Someone?

Who?

He kept reading.

They told me you chose your family over me.

They told me you wanted me gone.

They told me you never loved me.

I believed them.

I was wrong.

Adrian felt a sharp pain in his chest.

Because he remembered that night.

The last night he saw Elena.

He remembered standing outside her apartment.

Angry.

Confused.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

A photograph.

Elena entering a hotel with another man.

A betrayal.

At least, that's what he believed.

He remembered shouting.

He remembered accusing her.

He remembered walking away.

And he remembered regretting it the moment he reached the street.

But when he returned the next day...

She was gone.

Her apartment was empty.

Her phone was disconnected.

Everyone told him she had abandoned him.

He spent years believing the worst.

But now...

The letter said something else.

Adrian continued reading.

The man who separated us knew about the child.

He knew about Clara.

And he knew that if you found out she existed, you would destroy everything to protect her.

Adrian's hand tightened around the paper.

A child.

His child.

A daughter.

A daughter he never knew existed.

He looked at Clara.

Eight years old.

The same dark eyes as Elena.

The same small habit of biting her lip when nervous.

Suddenly, all the missing pieces started moving.

But then he saw the final line of the letter.

And every piece of warmth inside him disappeared.

Adrian, before you trust anyone...

Remember this.

The person who destroyed our lives is someone you call family.

The letter slipped from his fingers.

Someone he called family.

Adrian thought of only a few people.

People who had been beside him when he built his empire.

People who knew his secrets.

People who knew Elena.

His father.

His closest executives.

His childhood friends.

One person immediately appeared in his mind.

The person who had always claimed to protect him.

The person who had helped him become the man he was.

Adrian looked at Clara.

"Where is your mother?"

The girl swallowed.

"At the hospital."

"Which hospital?"

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

"The same hospital where she told me never to go near..."

"Why?"

Clara's eyes filled with fear.

"Because she said the people there were watching us."

Adrian felt his blood run cold.

He grabbed his coat.

"Take me to her."

But before Clara could move...

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Then another.

Heavy footsteps approached the front door.

The children's faces changed instantly.

They weren't surprised.

They were afraid.

Clara grabbed Adrian's hand.

"Don't let them see you."

Adrian looked toward the door.

"Who are they?"

The little girl whispered:

"The people who have been looking for us."

The door handle slowly turned.

Adrian's eyes hardened.

For twenty years, he had built an empire because he believed power could protect the people he loved.

Now he realized something terrifying.

The people hunting his daughter weren't afraid of his wealth.

They weren't afraid of his name.

They were afraid of the truth.

And someone outside was about to make sure that truth disappeared forever.

The door opened.

A shadow appeared.

Then a familiar voice spoke.

"Adrian Vale..."

The color drained from Adrian's face.

Because the person standing there...

Was the last person in the world he expected.

His own brother.
