Chapter 8 - The Secret of Evelyn’s MotherDamien smashed a window.

Rain poured in.
Fresh air rushed through the broken glass.
“Move!”
They climbed outside.
Security lights swept across the garden.
Noah grabbed Evelyn's hand.
She held on.
They ran.
Or tried to.
Evelyn stumbled constantly.
Her legs weren't strong enough.
But she refused the wheelchair.
They reached a maintenance building.
Inside, Damien locked the door.
Noah was breathing hard.
Evelyn looked at him.
“You said my mother died naturally.”
Noah looked at Mara.
Evelyn's expression changed.
“You knew.”
Mara had just arrived.
She looked at her former patient.
“I knew something was wrong.”
“Tell me.”
Mara shook her head.
“I need you to hear the whole story.”
She took out an old file.
“Your mother discovered that Victor was moving money from the family foundation into shell companies.”
Evelyn stared at the papers.
“Why?”
“To finance something called Project Eden.”
“What is that?”
Mara hesitated.
“A private neurological treatment program.”
Evelyn frowned.
“Treatment?”
Mara nodded.
“They were experimenting with trauma and memory.”
Noah looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
Mara answered softly.
“They discovered that memory can change how the body responds to injury.”
Evelyn felt sick.
“They used me.”
“Yes.”
“The accident.”
“Yes.”
“You caused my paralysis?”
“No.”
Mara looked directly into her eyes.
“Your injuries were real.”
Then she said the words Evelyn had never heard from a doctor.
“But your paralysis became psychological after the physical damage healed.”
Evelyn stepped back.
Her mind raced.
“You mean…”
“You could have recovered.”
Tears filled Evelyn's eyes.
“But they kept telling me I couldn't.”
Mara nodded.
“They built your entire identity around being helpless.”
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Seven years.
Seven years spent believing her own body had betrayed her.
No.
Someone had trained her to fear it.
Her father.
Her doctor.
Everyone she trusted.
Noah came closer.
“That’s why I told you to stand.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“How did you know?”
Noah shrugged.
“My mom taught me.”
Mara smiled sadly.
“She taught herself first.”
Evelyn looked at the old file.
“Project Eden.”
Mara nodded.
“Your mother tried to expose it.”
“What happened to her?”
Silence.
Then Damien answered.
“She didn't die naturally.”
Evelyn's face went pale.
“Victor killed her.”
Mara looked down.
“We have evidence.”
Evelyn's voice cracked.
“Why didn't you go to the police?”
“Because every investigator we approached disappeared from the case.”
Damien added,
“And because Victor owned half the people who could prosecute him.”
Noah opened the file.
A photograph fell out.
A younger Victor stood beside Evelyn's mother.
Between them was another person.
A woman.
Mara went completely still.
Evelyn looked at her.
“Who is she?”
Mara whispered,
“My sister.”
Evelyn's eyes widened.
“What?”
“She was the lead researcher on Project Eden.”
Mara stared at the photograph.
“She died the same week your mother did.”
Noah picked up another document.
At the bottom was a signature.
He read it aloud.
“Evelyn Hartwell.”
Evelyn froze.
“I never signed that.”
Mara looked at the paper.
“Then someone forged your signature.”
“No.”
Evelyn's voice became very quiet.
Someone had not simply manipulated her body.
They had used her identity.
Her name.
Her inheritance.
Her entire life.
May you like
And somewhere inside Project Eden was the original contract bearing her signature.
The signature used to steal everything.
