Chapter 5 - The Tape in the DarkMara and Noah returned home just after sunrise.

The blue van was still warm from the drive.
Mara unlocked the apartment.
Something was wrong.
The door wasn't fully closed.
She stopped.
Noah bumped into her back.
“Mom?”
“Stay behind me.”
She pushed the door open.
The apartment had been searched.
Drawers were hanging open.
Documents were scattered across the floor.
The storage box was missing.
Mara's breathing stopped.
“No.”
She ran inside.
“No, no, no…”
Noah looked around.
“What did they take?”
Mara didn't answer.
Then Noah pointed toward the kitchen.
“They missed that.”
Under a loose floorboard was a cassette recorder.
Mara grabbed it.
They ran.
Ten minutes later, they were hiding inside an abandoned church on the edge of town.
Mara inserted the cassette.
Static.
Then voices.
Mara's voice.
Evelyn's voice.
And a third man.
Victor.
The recording was from seven years ago.
Evelyn was crying.
“Why can't I feel my legs?”
Victor spoke calmly.
“You've been through a terrible accident.”
Mara's voice cut in.
“Her scans don't support complete paralysis.”
Victor snapped,
“You're not qualified to interpret them.”
“I am.”
“You'll keep quiet.”
Then another voice.
Julian Mercer.
“She remembers the collision.”
Victor asked,
“What does she remember?”
Mara whispered,
“She saw someone tamper with the vehicle.”
The recording went silent for several seconds.
Then Victor said something that made Noah look at his mother.
“Then we'll make sure she never remembers.”
Mara stopped the tape.
Noah stared at her.
“They did this to her.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Mara's lips trembled.
“Because Evelyn was supposed to inherit everything when she turned thirty.”
Noah frowned.
“She had money.”
“She had something more dangerous than money.”
Mara looked at the cassette.
“Control.”
Inside the Hartwell mansion, Evelyn stood in front of a mirror.
She had taken ten steps.
Then twelve.
Her hands shook.
But she was improving.
Damien entered.
“I found Mara.”
Evelyn turned.
“Where is she?”
“We lost her.”
“Lost her?”
“She was attacked.”
“Is she alive?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Bring her here.”
“It's not safe.”
“For who?”
Damien didn't answer.
Evelyn noticed a bruise across his knuckles.
“Did my father order you to find her?”
Damien looked away.
“Yes.”
“Will you?”
“No.”
Evelyn stared at him.
He reached into his jacket.
“I've worked for your father for nine years.”
He placed a small key on the table.
“But I stopped working for him tonight.”
Evelyn picked up the key.
“What is this?”
“An office under the west wing.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“What is inside?”
Damien's answer came quietly.
“Everything your family has spent seven years hiding.”
That night, Evelyn entered the west wing.
She unlocked the hidden door.
Inside was a narrow room.
Computer screens.
Medical files.
Photographs.
Security footage.
And one wall covered with pictures of her.
Evelyn stepped closer.
Every stage of her recovery had been recorded.
Every therapy session.
Every failed attempt to stand.
Every breakdown.
Then she saw a photograph that made her blood run cold.
It was Noah.
Taken two years earlier.
On the back was a handwritten note:
THE BOY MUST NEVER MEET HER.
Evelyn turned toward Damien.
“Why were they watching a ten-year-old?”
Damien didn't answer.
He looked at the photograph again.

Then whispered,
“Because Noah isn't just Mara Bell's son.”
