Chapter 14 - The Last LieVictor's finger tightened around the trigger.

Noah refused to move.

Evelyn grabbed his shoulder.

“Behind me.”

Victor laughed.

“You still think you can protect him?”

Evelyn stared at the gun.

“You're not shooting.”

Victor's smile faded.

“Why?”

“Because you need him.”

Silence.

Victor looked at Noah.

Evelyn continued.

“You've spent years watching him.”

“You don't understand.”

“You need what he remembers.”

Victor hesitated.

Mara understood.

“Noah remembers details.”

Victor stared at the boy.

“What did he see?”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“What does he know?”

Noah looked at Victor.

Then he smiled.

“The night of the crash.”

Everyone froze.

Victor's face went pale.

Noah continued.

“I saw you.”

Mara gasped.

Noah was only a baby.

He could not have remembered.

Then he pulled a small object from his pocket.

A tiny digital recorder.

“My dad gave me this before he died.”

Victor's eyes widened.

Daniel's voice came from the recorder.

“If they ever find Noah, play this.”

Static.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Victor didn't cause the crash alone.”

Evelyn stared.

Daniel continued.

“The person inside the car was someone we trusted.”

Victor whispered,

“No.”

The recording played.

A woman spoke.

Evelyn's mother.

“I couldn't stop him.”

Evelyn looked at her.

Her mother began crying.

“The brakes were already damaged.”

Daniel's voice returned.

“Then she did the only thing she could.”

A pause.

“She switched seats.”

Evelyn froze.

Her mother stepped forward.

“You were never supposed to be in that car.”

Evelyn stared.

“What?”

“You were supposed to leave with Daniel.”

Victor had planned to kill Evelyn's mother.

She had switched places with her daughter at the last second.

But the crash happened anyway.

The person everyone believed died was not Evelyn's mother.

It was someone Victor had hired.

The real victim had been hidden.

The entire death story had been fabricated.

Evelyn's mother explained.

“Victor couldn't admit what happened.”

“So he created the story.”

“Yes.”

“And then he turned me into a prisoner.”

“Yes.”

Victor suddenly laughed.

“You think this changes anything?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“It changes everything.”

Police stormed into the room.

Victor raised the gun.

Damien appeared behind him.

“Drop it.”

Victor spun.

Damien tackled him.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck the ceiling.

Victor fell.

Officers restrained him.

Evelyn stood frozen.

Damien looked at her.

“You okay?”

She nodded.

Then he smiled.

“I told you to trust your legs.”

Evelyn laughed.

“My legs hate you.”

“They'll get over it.”

Noah ran to Damien.

“You came back.”

Damien ruffled his hair.

“I said I'd slow them down.”

He looked toward Evelyn.

“I never said I'd stay gone.”

Victor was dragged away.

For the first time in seven years, the Hartwell mansion was silent.

No cameras.

No doctors.

No guards.

No locked doors.

Just Evelyn.

Her mother.

Noah.

And a truth finally standing in the light.

But one mystery remained.

Why had Noah known, before anyone else, that Evelyn could stand?

Evelyn asked him.

Noah looked embarrassed.

“My mom told me.”

Mara smiled.

“I told him your body was waiting for permission.”

Evelyn laughed.

“That sounds crazy.”

Mara shook her head.

“No.”

May you like

She looked at Noah.

“Sometimes children see what adults are too afraid to believe.”
