Chapter 7 - The Boy in the Glass RoomVictor stood behind Noah with one hand on the boy's shoulder.

Noah was frightened.

But he wasn't crying.

Evelyn watched the screen.

“Let him go.”

Victor smiled.

“You always were emotional.”

“Let him go.”

“You've spent seven years trusting me.”

“And now I know better.”

Victor's smile disappeared.

“You don't know anything.”

“I know you lied about my paralysis.”

“You were injured.”

“You drugged me.”

“You were unstable.”

“You watched me fail to walk.”

Victor took a breath.

“I watched my daughter survive.”

“No.”

Evelyn stepped closer to the screen.

“You watched your inheritance survive.”

For the first time, Victor looked angry.

“You think money explains everything?”

“Doesn't it?”

Victor leaned closer.

“You don't understand what happened that night.”

“Then tell me.”

He shook his head.

“Not yet.”

The screen went black.

Damien looked at Evelyn.

“We need to get him.”

“Where?”

“I traced the feed.”

“Where?”

“The old glasshouse.”

Evelyn stood.

Damien stared.

“You can't walk that far.”

“I don't have to walk.”

She grabbed the railing.

“Just get me there.”

They moved through hidden corridors beneath the mansion.

The glasshouse had not been used in years.

Rain hit the roof.

Inside, Noah sat tied to a chair.

Victor stood beside him.

A second man was there.

Julian Mercer.

Evelyn's doctor.

The man who had controlled her treatment for seven years.

“You,” she whispered.

Julian looked almost relieved.

“You finally remember me.”

Evelyn's hands tightened.

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You told me I would never walk again.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Julian looked at Victor.

“Because every time you got close to the truth, you became dangerous.”

Noah shouted,

“Don't listen to them!”

Victor slapped the table.

“Quiet.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“No.”

Victor looked at her.

Evelyn forced herself upright.

Her legs shook.

She kept moving.

One step.

Two.

Three.

Julian stared.

“You shouldn't be able to do that.”

Evelyn smiled through the pain.

“That's what you wanted me to believe.”

Victor looked at Noah.

“Ask him.”

Noah stared at Evelyn.

“He told me my dad died because he betrayed the family.”

Victor's expression changed.

Evelyn turned to him.

“What did you do to Daniel?”

Nothing.

No answer.

Then Noah spoke.

“My dad wasn't trying to hurt you.”

Victor froze.

Noah continued.

“He was trying to save you.”

Julian lunged toward the boy.

Damien intercepted him.

A struggle broke out.

Noah kicked the chair sideways.

The rope loosened.

Evelyn grabbed him.

“Run!”

They fled into the rain.

Behind them, Victor shouted.

“You don't know what Daniel was going to reveal!”

Evelyn stopped.

She turned.

“What?”

Victor's eyes filled with rage.

“Your mother didn't die naturally.”

Silence.

Evelyn felt the world disappear beneath her feet.

Victor said,

“Daniel knew why.”

Then the glasshouse doors slammed shut.

May you like

Locked.

Smoke began filling the room.
