Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO DISAPPEAREDPolice were called.

By the time they arrived, the man was gone.
But he had left something behind.
An envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
A much younger version of my father.
Standing beside Richard Hale.
And between them was Victoria.
All three were smiling.
On the back someone had written:
Ask your father who really betrayed whom.
I turned to Dad.
He wouldn't look at me.
“Dad.”
He sank into a chair.
“I didn't betray Richard.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
He closed his eyes.
“Twenty-two years ago, Richard discovered that someone inside his company was stealing money.”
“Who?”
“He thought it was me.”
“But it wasn't?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Dad looked at the photograph.
“Victoria.”
I froze.
“Your mother-in-law?”
“Yes.”
Dad explained everything.
Victoria had been secretly transferring company funds through shell businesses.
Richard discovered it.
Before he could expose her, the money disappeared.
The evidence pointed toward Dad.
Richard confronted him.
Then vanished.
Victoria took control of the family company.
For twenty-two years, everyone believed Dad had destroyed Richard.
Except Richard knew the truth.
Now I understood Julian.
His family had raised him on a lie.
And his mother had fed that lie for decades.
But why marry me?
Because revenge wasn't enough.
They wanted something that would erase the past in their favor.
My father opened an old metal box.
Inside was a tiny flash drive.
“This,” he said, “contains the original financial records.”
I stared at it.
“You had this all along?”
“I thought Richard was dead.”
“And now?”
Dad swallowed.
“Now I think he wants it back.”
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Julian.
Come to the Hale house alone tonight.
Then another.
Bring the original trust documents.
Then a third.
If you don't, your father goes to prison for what happened twenty-two years ago.
I stared at the screen.
My father cursed.
“He's bluffing.”
“Maybe.”
Then Mr. Carter called.
“Don't go.”
“I wasn't planning to.”
“I just received something from the county.”
“What?”
“A request to invalidate your marriage.”
I almost laughed.
“From Julian?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Mr. Carter hesitated.
“The request claims you were mentally incompetent at the time you signed the marriage documents.”
My heart stopped.
“They're trying to say I wasn't capable of consenting?”
“Yes.”
I stared at the screen.
Then I smiled.
Because suddenly, I understood.
They were terrified.
May you like
They were trying to erase the marriage before I could expose what they'd done.
And that meant they had left a trail.
