Chapter 11 - THE RETURNNobody spoke.

Richard walked slowly into the room.
Julian looked like he had seen a ghost.
“Dad?”
Richard stopped.
“Yes.”
Julian backed away.
“You're alive.”
Richard's eyes softened.
“I am.”
Victoria moved toward him.
“Richard…”
“Don't.”
One word.
She stopped.
He looked at Julian.
“I watched you grow up from a distance.”
Julian's face twisted with anger.
“You abandoned me.”
“No.”
Richard's voice broke.
“I disappeared because your mother was trying to kill the truth.”
Julian shook his head.
“She told me you stole from the company.”
“She lied.”
“She said Elena's father destroyed us.”
“She lied.”
“She said your disappearance was his fault.”
Richard looked at me.
“No.”
Then he turned toward my father.
“I owe you an apology.”
Dad's eyes filled with tears.
“For twenty-two years, I believed you betrayed me.”
Richard nodded.
“I know.”
He placed a small recorder on the table.
“This contains Victoria's original confession.”
Victoria lunged for it.
Julian caught her wrist.
“Mom.”
She stared at him.
He whispered:
“Did you really do all of this?”
Victoria said nothing.
That silence answered him.
The police entered moments later.
She was arrested.
Julian wasn't.
Not yet.
He was taken aside for questioning.
I watched him through the doorway.
He looked smaller.
Almost ordinary.
When he finally came back, his eyes were red.
“Elena.”
I turned.
“I didn't know everything.”
“But you knew enough.”
He closed his eyes.
“I knew about the money.”
“Yes.”
“I thought you were going to help us willingly.”
“You knew they wanted me trapped.”
He swallowed.
“I thought after a year…”
“You thought I would become convenient.”
He couldn't answer.
I stepped closer.
“You threw a dirty towel at me fourteen hours after our wedding.”
His eyes dropped.
“That was supposed to scare you.”
“It did.”
He looked up.
“But not into staying.”
I walked away.
Behind me, I heard his voice.
“Do you hate me?”
I stopped.
“No.”
He looked hopeful.
I turned.
“I pity the man who had a chance to be loved and traded it for access to a bank account.”
Then I left.
Outside, reporters were already gathering.
News traveled fast.
But there was one problem.
My name was now public.
And somewhere in the crowd, a stranger was holding a photograph of me.
