Chapter 14 - THE FAMILY FALLSThe trial began months later.

Victoria refused to admit guilt.
Richard testified.
My father testified.
Laura testified.
Five other women testified.
Then I took the stand.
The courtroom was silent.
The prosecutor asked:
“What happened fourteen hours after your wedding?”
I looked directly at the jury.
“My husband threw a dirty cloth in my face and told me I was a maid.”
A murmur moved through the room.
“And what did you do?”
“I smiled.”
“Why?”
“Because I realized I had married a stranger.”
The prosecutor asked about the forged documents.
The surveillance.
The attempted transfer.
The twenty-five million.
Then she held up the photograph of the false signature.
“Is this your signature?”
“No.”
“Did you sign this?”
“No.”
“Were you ever in the state on the date this document was allegedly signed?”
“No.”
The defense objected.
Records proved it.
My location data.
Flight records.
Bank transactions.
Cameras.
Every lie had left a footprint.
Victoria's lawyer tried to paint me as a wealthy woman seeking revenge after an unhappy marriage.
I almost smiled.
Then Laura testified.
She described the same pattern.
The same coercion.
The same financial documents.
The same pressure.
Six women.
One system.
Then came the final recording.
Victoria's voice filled the courtroom.
“She'll give us everything once she believes she has a husband who loves her.”
Nobody moved.
The judge listened.
Julian sat with his head bowed.
When the recording ended, Victoria finally broke.
She shouted:
“YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!”
The judge ordered silence.
But she continued.
“I built this family!”
Richard closed his eyes.
Victoria pointed at him.
“I did everything because you were weak!”
Then she turned toward Julian.
“And you were too weak to finish it!”
Julian looked at her.
“No, Mom.”
His voice was barely audible.
“I was just too stupid to see who you really were.”
Victoria's face collapsed.
Months later, the verdict came.
Guilty.
The Hale empire disintegrated.
The company was sold.
The victims were compensated.
My trust remained untouched.
Julian received a reduced sentence after cooperating fully.
He lost everything.
The mansion.
The company.
The family name.
And, eventually, me.
But I didn't feel victorious.
I felt free.
Then one afternoon, Mr. Carter called.
“There is a problem.”
I laughed.
“After everything, I'm almost disappointed.”
“You should sit down.”
I did.
He continued.
“We found another account.”
“Whose?”
“Victoria's.”
“How much?”
He paused.
“Seventy-two million dollars.”
I stared ahead.
“Impossible.”
“It gets worse.”
He sent me the records.
The money wasn't from the Hale family.
It was connected to my grandmother's trust.
And someone had been moving it for twenty-two years.
Someone close to my family.
Someone we had trusted.

The name appeared on the screen.
My father's.
