Chapter 13 - THE SMIRKThe legal case exploded.

Fraud.
Forgery.
Financial conspiracy.
Identity theft.
Attempted unauthorized transfer.
The same investigators who had initially questioned me were now gathering evidence against the Hales.
Then Julian asked to see me.
I agreed.
Not because I forgave him.
Because I had one question.
We met in a quiet conference room.
He looked exhausted.
“I didn't know about the surveillance.”
I said nothing.
“I knew Mom wanted your money.”
“You helped.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He stared at the table.
“Because I believed everything she told me.”
“What did she tell you?”
“That your father ruined ours.”
“And did you believe revenge justified everything?”
He looked at me.
“I believed you would eventually understand.”
I laughed once.
“You married a person hoping to change her into a solution.”
He had no answer.
Then he slid a folder across the table.
“What is this?”
“Everything I have.”
Inside were his private emails.
Bank records.
Messages with Victoria.
And something else.
A notebook.
His handwritten notes.
I opened it.
The first page read:
ELENA — TARGET PROFILE
I read every page.
How I reacted to stress.
What gifts made me happy.
Which restaurants I liked.
What subjects made me emotional.
What made me trust people.
It wasn't a love story.
It was a blueprint.
At the last page, there was one sentence.
Wedding day: complete acquisition plan.
I stared at him.
“How long?”
“What?”
“How long were you planning this?”
He whispered:
“Two years.”
I closed the notebook.
“Then we're finished.”
He nodded.
But before I could stand, he said:
“There is one more thing.”
I stopped.
“Mother didn't create the plan.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who did?”
“My grandmother.”
I stared at him.
“The trust was created because your grandmother knew our family would try to reach it.”
Julian looked terrified.
“And she left instructions.”
“What instructions?”
“Only your father and Richard were supposed to know.”
“Tell me.”
He swallowed.
“If the Hale family ever gained legal access to the trust, the entire fortune would automatically transfer.”
“To whom?”
He looked directly at me.
“To the people harmed by the Hale family.”
I froze.
There was more.
A list.
Six names.
Six women.
All former Hale victims.
And at the bottom, my name.
The trust wasn't designed to make me rich.
It was designed to protect me.
And now that the Hales had tried to steal it, the protection clause had activated.
Julian lowered his head.
“You weren't the final target.”
“What was I?”
May you like
He looked at me.
“The final witness.”
