CHAPTER 6: THE ROOM THAT HAD ALWAYS BEEN LOCKED

Ethan stared at Daniel.

“She's been in my penthouse?”

Daniel nodded.

“For three years.”

“That’s impossible.”

“No. What’s impossible is that you never noticed.”

Ethan's mind raced.

The penthouse had dozens of rooms, but Emma's old bedroom had remained locked since the day she disappeared.

Vanessa had always told him the same thing.

“Some memories are better left alone.”

Ethan had believed her.

Now he wondered how many times he had walked past that door while his own daughter was trapped somewhere behind it.

“Turn around,” he said.

Daniel immediately turned the SUV around.

“Ethan,” Emma said quietly.

“What?”

“If Claire is there, Vanessa will be there too.”

“Good.”

“You don't understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

Ethan looked at her.

“She took my daughter.”

Emma shook her head.

“She may have been protecting her.”

Ethan's expression hardened.

“After everything Vanessa did?”

“She isn't the person you think she is.”

“She attacked Lily.”

“She was trying to stop someone else from getting to her.”

“Then why didn't she tell me?”

Emma looked away.

“Because she didn't trust you.”

Ethan stared at her.

“Why?”

Emma didn't answer.

That silence told him more than words could.

“You think I was involved.”

“No.”

“You do.”

“I think you were manipulated.”

“That's not the same thing.”

“No.”

Emma looked at him.

“But it still destroyed our family.”

The SUV continued through the night.

Twenty minutes later, they returned to the building through an underground entrance.

Daniel shut off the headlights.

“Security is down.”

Ethan looked around.

“Where is everyone?”

“Either evacuated or paid to disappear.”

They entered through a maintenance corridor.

The building felt different now.

Too quiet.

Too empty.

Ethan led the group upstairs.

When the elevator doors opened, the penthouse looked untouched.

Broken glass covered the floor.

A chair had been overturned.

The lights flickered.

Lily stayed close to Maria.

Ethan looked toward the hallway.

Emma whispered:

“Don't go alone.”

“I won't.”

Daniel checked the corridor.

“Clear.”

They moved toward Emma's old bedroom.

The door was still locked.

Ethan stood before it.

For years, he had wondered why he could never bring himself to open it.

Now he knew.

His hands trembled as he reached for the handle.

Locked.

Daniel produced the key from his pocket.

“This was hidden inside the blue box.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You had it?”

“Emma gave it to me.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because you weren't ready.”

Ethan stared at the door.

Then inserted the key.

Click.

The lock opened.

The door slowly swung inward.

A cold draft passed over them.

The room was dark.

Dust covered the furniture.

Emma's old perfume bottle still sat on the dresser.

Her wedding photograph remained beside it.

Ethan stared at the picture.

He remembered that day.

Emma laughing.

Emma crying.

Emma telling him she was scared.

He had forgotten how much he missed her.

Then Lily whispered:

“Daddy…”

“What?”

“There.”

She pointed toward the closet.

The door was slightly open.

Ethan approached.

“Claire?”

Nothing.

He opened the closet.

Empty.

Maria checked beneath the bed.

“She's not here.”

Ethan looked around.

“Then where is she?”

Emma walked toward the wall.

She touched the wallpaper.

“Here.”

“What?”

Emma pressed her hand against a small section.

A hidden panel clicked.

The wall opened.

Behind it was a narrow staircase.

Ethan stared.

“You knew about this?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I wasn't sure who built it.”

Daniel stepped inside.

“There's another door at the bottom.”

They descended.

The staircase ended in a small underground room.

Ethan stopped.

A child's bed sat against the wall.

Beside it were toys.

Books.

Drawings.

A small table.

Someone had been living there.

Recently.

Ethan picked up a drawing.

It showed a family.

A father.

A mother.

A little girl.

And another little girl.

Four people holding hands.

Ethan's heart tightened.

At the bottom of the page was a name.

Claire.

Emma began crying.

“She drew us.”

Ethan looked at her.

“She knew who we were?”

“She always knew.”

“Then why didn't she come to me?”

Emma lowered her head.

“Because she was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

A voice came from the darkness.

“Of them.”

Everyone froze.

A little girl stepped out from behind a bookshelf.

She was perhaps five years old.

Dark hair.

Pale skin.

A small scar near her chin.

She wore a yellow dress.

Ethan couldn't move.

The image from his memories suddenly returned.

A little girl.

A yellow dress.

A red balloon.

He whispered:

“Claire?”

The girl stared at him.

Then she looked at Emma.

“Mommy?”

Emma dropped to her knees.

“Claire.”

The girl ran into her arms.

Ethan stood frozen.

Three years.

A daughter he never knew was alive.

A child who had lived beneath his own home.

He slowly approached.

Claire looked at him.

“Are you Daddy?”

Ethan couldn't speak.

He nodded.

Claire stared at him for several seconds.

Then she asked:

“Why did you leave me?”

The question destroyed him.

“I didn't know.”

“You forgot me.”

“I didn't.”

“You did.”

Ethan knelt.

“I swear I didn't know you were here.”

Claire looked at Emma.

“Mommy said you weren't allowed to remember.”

Ethan looked at Emma.

“What does that mean?”

Emma closed her eyes.

“Ethan…”

“No.”

His voice became firmer.

“You tell me everything now.”

Claire suddenly looked toward the ceiling.

Her face changed.

“She's here.”

Emma's expression turned pale.

“Who?”

Claire whispered:

“Vanessa.”

Daniel immediately reached for his weapon.

“Where?”

Claire pointed upward.

“She came into the house before you did.”

Ethan looked toward the staircase.

“How long ago?”

“Not long.”

“Where is she?”

Claire pointed toward the wall.

“In Mommy's room.”

Ethan's heart stopped.

He turned toward the stairs.

“We have to go.”

Emma grabbed his arm.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because that's what she wants.”

“What?”

Emma looked terrified.

“She wants you to find her.”

Ethan stared at her.

“Why?”

Emma whispered:

“Because she knows Claire is here.”

A loud sound echoed from upstairs.

Bang.

Everyone froze.

Another sound followed.

A door slamming.

Then Vanessa's voice echoed through the hidden staircase.

“Ethan.”

He looked upward.

“Bring me Claire.”

Ethan stepped in front of the child.

“Never.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

“What?”

“You think I'm the villain.”

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“You attacked my daughter.”

“I saved her.”

“You lied to me.”

“To protect her.”

“You kept Claire hidden.”

“To keep her alive.”

Ethan shouted:

“Then why did you never tell me?”

Silence.

Then Vanessa answered:

“Because your father ordered me to kill her.”

Ethan froze.

Emma's face went white.

Daniel whispered:

“She knows.”

Vanessa continued:

“And tonight, Ethan…”

A pause.

“…he's coming back to finish the job.”

Ethan stared toward the stairs.

“Your father is dead.”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“No, Ethan.”

The lights suddenly came on.

A man appeared at the top of the staircase.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Wearing a dark suit.

Ethan looked at him.

His entire body went numb.

He knew that face.

He had seen it on every family photograph.

Every newspaper article.

Every childhood memory.

His father.

The man who had supposedly died ten years ago.

He looked down at Ethan and smiled.

“Hello, son.”

Ethan couldn't breathe.

Claire clutched Emma's hand.

May you like

And Vanessa whispered from the darkness:

“Now you finally know who has been running your life.”
