CHAPTER 1: THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

The penthouse was supposed to be the safest place in Manhattan.

It had floor-to-ceiling windows, private elevators, armed security downstairs, and a view of the city that could make anyone believe nothing bad could ever happen there.

But that night, behind those walls of glass and steel, a little girl screamed for her life.

“No! Please!”

Lily’s tiny fingers desperately clutched the handle of her favorite stuffed rabbit.

It was old, faded, and missing one button eye.

To everyone else, it looked worthless.

To Lily, it was the last thing she had left from her mother.

The wealthy woman standing over her didn't care.

“Take your filthy hands off that!”

Lily froze.

“I’m sorry…”

“I said let go!”

“But it’s mine.”

The woman snatched the rabbit away.

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“No, please! That’s my toy!”

The woman laughed coldly.

“You have no right to touch anything in this penthouse.”

“But Daddy said—”

“Your father isn't here.”

Lily looked toward the hallway.

“Mommy… help me.”

The woman's expression suddenly hardened.

“No one's coming to help you now.”

She grabbed Lily by the arm.

The little girl cried out.

“Stop! You're hurting me!”

“Then stop fighting!”

Across the room, Maria, the maid, dropped the tray she was carrying.

“Put her down this instant!”

The wealthy woman turned.

“Stay out of this, you pathetic maid!”

Maria didn't move.

She had worked in that penthouse for nearly six years.

She had seen the woman's temper.

She had seen how she treated employees.

But she had never seen her touch Lily.

Until tonight.

“Let the child go.”

“Know your place.”

“My place?” Maria stepped forward. “My place is wherever a child needs protection.”

The woman shoved Lily backward.

For one terrifying second, the little girl lost her balance.

Maria lunged.

“I've got you!”

She caught Lily against her chest.

“It's okay, sweetheart. I've got you.”

Lily buried her face against Maria's uniform.

“Daddy…”

Maria looked toward the entrance.

“He'll be home soon.”

But the wealthy woman suddenly smiled.

“No.”

Maria's stomach tightened.

“What?”

“He won't.”

Before Maria could respond, the private elevator doors opened.

A man's voice echoed through the penthouse.

“What in the world is going on here?”

Everyone froze.

Ethan stood inside the elevator.

His expensive suit was still covered with the rain from outside.

But he wasn't looking at the woman.

He was looking at his daughter.

Lily was trembling in Maria's arms.

“Daddy!”

Ethan's face changed instantly.

He dropped his briefcase.

“Lily?”

She ran toward him.

Ethan caught her and pulled her tightly against his chest.

“Daddy!”

“I'm here. I'm here.”

He looked down.

Red marks were visible around Lily's arm.

His expression darkened.

“Who did this?”

The room became silent.

The wealthy woman stepped forward.

“Ethan, please. It was an accident.”

“An accident?”

“She lost her balance.”

Ethan stared at her.

“I saw exactly what you did.”

Her face went pale.

“You tossed my daughter into the air.”

“No, Ethan…”

“I watched you.”

“I didn't mean for it to happen!”

Ethan looked at Maria.

“Did she touch Lily?”

Maria hesitated.

The wealthy woman immediately shook her head.

“Don't answer him.”

Maria looked at Ethan.

Then at Lily.

Then back at the woman.

“Yes.”

The word fell into the room like a gunshot.

“She grabbed Lily,” Maria continued. “She took the toy from her. Then she shoved her.”

The wealthy woman's voice rose.

“You're lying!”

Maria didn't back down.

“I caught her before she hit the floor.”

Ethan's jaw tightened.

He looked at his daughter.

“Lily, sweetheart…”

She was crying silently.

“Did she hurt you?”

Lily nodded.

The wealthy woman stepped closer.

“Ethan, please listen to me. I was angry, but I would never intentionally hurt her.”

“You were angry?”

“She was touching things that weren't hers.”

Ethan stared at her in disbelief.

“That toy belonged to my daughter.”

“I didn't know.”

“You've lived here for months.”

Silence.

Then Ethan noticed something.

The stuffed rabbit.

It was lying on the floor near the sofa.

He picked it up.

One button eye was missing.

And there was a small red stain on its ear.

Ethan frowned.

“What's this?”

The wealthy woman immediately looked away.

“Probably dirt.”

Ethan turned toward Maria.

“Was this toy already damaged?”

Maria's expression changed.

“No.”

“What?”

“I've cleaned that rabbit hundreds of times.”

Maria slowly pointed toward the woman.

“That mark wasn't there this morning.”

The wealthy woman's face went white.

Ethan looked at the rabbit again.

Then Lily.

Then the woman.

“Why were you really trying to take this from her?”

“I told you. She was touching my things.”

“No.”

Ethan's voice became quiet.

“You're hiding something.”

“I am not!”

“You've been lying to me since I walked through that door.”

The woman suddenly began crying.

“Ethan, please!”

She grabbed his arm.

“Don't do this.”

He pulled away.

“You're a heartless monster. How dare you lay a hand on my daughter?”

“Please!”

“Get out.”

She froze.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“But Ethan…”

“Get out of my house.”

Her tears disappeared.

For the first time, the fear on her face was replaced by something else.

Something colder.

Something Ethan didn't recognize.

“You really want me gone?”

“Yes.”

She stared at him for several seconds.

Then she smiled.

It wasn't a frightened smile.

It was almost amused.

“Fine.”

She turned toward the elevator.

But before stepping inside, she stopped.

“Just remember one thing, Ethan.”

He said nothing.

She looked directly at Lily.

“You don't know what your daughter has been told.”

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

The elevator doors began closing.

The woman smiled.

“Ask her about the night her mother disappeared.”

The doors shut.

Ethan stood completely still.

Maria looked at him.

“Sir…”

But Ethan wasn't listening.

He slowly turned toward Lily.

His daughter was clutching the stuffed rabbit.

Her face had gone pale.

Ethan crouched in front of her.

“Lily…”

She wouldn't look at him.

“Sweetheart, what did she mean?”

Lily's fingers tightened around the rabbit.

Then, in a trembling voice, she whispered:

“Daddy…”

“Yes?”

“She knows where Mommy is.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

Because for three years, everyone had told him the same thing.

His wife was dead.

May you like

But there had never been a body.

And suddenly, for the first time, Ethan wondered if the biggest lie of his life had just been exposed.
