CHAPTER 4: THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK

Ethan forgot how to breathe.

Emma stood inside the elevator.

Three years.

Three years of photographs, unanswered questions, sleepless nights, and a grave that had never contained a body.

And now she was standing ten feet away from him.

Alive.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face was thinner.

There was a faint scar above her eyebrow.

But Ethan knew those eyes.

He would have recognized them anywhere.

“Emma…”

Her lips trembled.

“Ethan.”

Lily screamed.

“Mommy!”

She ran forward.

Emma immediately stepped out of the elevator.

“Lily!”

She dropped to her knees.

Lily threw herself into her arms.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Mother and daughter simply held each other.

Ethan watched them.

His eyes burned.

He wanted to move.

He wanted to embrace Emma.

He wanted to demand answers.

But something stopped him.

Emma looked afraid.

Not relieved.

Not happy.

Terrified.

She whispered something into Lily's ear.

Lily nodded.

Then Emma looked directly at Ethan.

“Where is the key?”

Ethan's hand tightened around the small metal key.

“You know about this?”

Emma nodded.

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

Her expression changed.

“Ethan, please.”

“You disappeared for three years.”

“I didn't have a choice.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

“By staying hidden?”

“By staying away from you.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“You could have contacted me.”

Emma shook her head.

“They were watching you.”

“Who?”

She looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“See?”

Emma's face hardened.

“Don't listen to her.”

Ethan turned toward Vanessa.

“You knew Emma was alive.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You attacked my daughter.”

Vanessa's expression became cold.

“I didn't come here to hurt Lily.”

“You grabbed her.”

“I was trying to retrieve something.”

“The rabbit?”

Vanessa nodded.

“The recording.”

Ethan stared at her.

“What recording?”

Vanessa looked at Emma.

“The one she made before she ran.”

Emma immediately pulled Lily behind her.

“Ethan, we need to leave.”

“Not until you tell me everything.”

“We don't have time.”

“Three years, Emma.”

His voice cracked.

“I waited three years.”

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“You knew?”

“I watched you.”

Ethan stared at her.

“What?”

“I saw you every day.”

“You were watching me?”

“From a distance.”

“Why?”

“Because they were watching me too.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Emma looked at him.

“You shouldn't have come here.”

Daniel smiled.

“You say that every time.”

“You were supposed to stay away.”

“I couldn't.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Because he finally found out.”

Emma closed her eyes.

“That wasn't supposed to happen yet.”

Ethan looked between them.

“What wasn't supposed to happen?”

Emma took a breath.

“Ethan, your entire life has been manipulated.”

“By Vanessa?”

“By an organization.”

“What organization?”

“It's called the Halcyon Foundation.”

Ethan frowned.

“The charity?”

Emma nodded.

“Everyone thinks they're a philanthropic organization.”

“They fund hospitals.”

“They fund hospitals, research centers, orphanages, and private clinics.”

“So?”

Emma's voice dropped.

“They also control them.”

Ethan felt a chill.

“Control them how?”

“Records.”

She looked at Lily.

“Birth records. Medical records. Adoption records.”

Daniel added:

“And death certificates.”

Ethan stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because if you control the records, you control the people.”

Silence.

Emma continued.

“When the twins were born, I discovered something.”

Ethan's expression tightened.

“The twins?”

Emma nodded.

“One of our babies was marked as deceased.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Emma looked directly at him.

“You don't.”

“What do you mean?”

“The baby who was marked as dead wasn't ours.”

Ethan went completely still.

“What?”

“They switched the babies.”

His face drained of color.

“Why?”

“Because our daughter was healthy.”

“And the other baby?”

Emma looked away.

“She belonged to someone powerful.”

Ethan's voice became barely audible.

“Who?”

Emma hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Vanessa.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Vanessa's expression remained strangely calm.

Ethan stared.

“You're saying Lily's sister…”

“Wasn't our daughter.”

“No.”

“Ethan…”

“No!”

He backed away.

“You're telling me our baby was switched at birth?”

“Yes.”

“And Vanessa took our child?”

Emma shook her head.

“Not exactly.”

“Then who did?”

Emma looked toward Daniel.

Daniel's face was grim.

“The hospital.”

Ethan's mind raced.

“Why would they do that?”

Emma's voice trembled.

“Because someone had ordered it.”

“Who?”

Emma didn't answer.

“Emma.”

She looked at him.

“Your father.”

The room went silent.

Ethan stared at her.

“My father died ten years ago.”

“I know.”

“So how could he order it?”

“He didn't.”

Ethan's brow furrowed.

Emma whispered:

“Someone used his name.”

“Who?”

Before she could answer, every light in the penthouse suddenly turned on.

A loud alarm began ringing.

Daniel looked toward the windows.

“Security breach.”

Ethan grabbed Lily.

“What is happening?”

Emma's face turned white.

“They found us.”

“Who?”

Emma looked at the elevator.

“Everyone.”

The building's emergency shutters began sliding over the windows.

Downstairs, security alarms screamed.

Maria rushed toward the door.

“Sir, we need to leave!”

Ethan looked at Emma.

“You're coming with us.”

She nodded.

But Vanessa didn't move.

Ethan pointed toward her.

“And she's not.”

Vanessa smiled.

“You still don't understand.”

“Understand what?”

She walked slowly toward the center of the room.

“You think I came here to stop Emma from escaping.”

Ethan narrowed his eyes.

“Didn't you?”

“No.”

Vanessa looked at Lily.

“I came here because I knew you'd finally discover the truth.”

Ethan felt a cold wave pass through him.

“What truth?”

Vanessa reached into her coat.

Emma immediately shouted:

“Ethan, get down!”

A gunshot exploded through the penthouse.

The glass behind Ethan shattered.

Lily screamed.

Maria pulled her to the floor.

Daniel tackled Ethan.

Another shot tore through the wall.

Vanessa ducked behind the sofa.

“Someone is shooting at us!”

Ethan stared at her.

“You're not behind this?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

Emma grabbed Ethan's arm.

“We have to go.”

“Where?”

“Room 317.”

“The hospital?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Emma looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“Because that's where they kept our daughter.”

Ethan froze.

“Our daughter is alive?”

Emma nodded.

“Yes.”

“Where is she now?”

Emma looked toward Lily.

Then she whispered:

“She isn't at the hospital anymore.”

A third gunshot shattered the remaining window.

Emma pulled Ethan toward the service hallway.

“She was taken last night.”

Ethan's heart stopped.

“Taken by who?”

Emma looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa looked back at her.

Then, for the first time, Vanessa's face showed genuine fear.

Emma whispered:

“By the person who ordered all of this.”

The service door suddenly slammed open.

A man in a black tactical uniform stepped inside.

He pointed a weapon at Ethan.

“Mr. Carter.”

Ethan froze.

The man's voice was calm.

“Your daughter is alive.”

Ethan's eyes widened.

“Where is she?”

The man smiled.

“Come with us.”

Emma grabbed Ethan's arm.

“Don't!”

The man raised his weapon.

“Or we'll kill the other one.”

Ethan stared at Lily.

Then at Emma.

Then at the armed man.

And suddenly he realized something terrifying.

The man hadn't said your daughter.

He had said the other one.

May you like

Which meant he knew Lily wasn't the only child Ethan had.

And somewhere in the city, another little girl was waiting for him.
