CHAPTER 15: THE LAST SECRET

“I'm her mother too.”
Ethan stared into the darkness where his mother had disappeared.
For several seconds, he couldn't move.
Then the shock broke.
“LILY!”
He ran after them.
The corridor was filled with smoke and dust.
Emergency lights flashed overhead.
The walls groaned as the facility collapsed around him.
“Lily!”
Nothing.
Then he heard a voice.
“Daddy!”
Ethan stopped.
He turned toward the sound.
“Lily?”
“Daddy!”
He ran toward it.
At the end of the corridor, he found Emma.
She was on the ground, bleeding from her forehead.
But she was alive.
And she was holding Lily.
Ethan dropped to his knees.
“Lily!”
His daughter threw herself into his arms.
“Daddy!”
He held her tightly.
“I thought I lost you.”
“I was scared.”
“I know.”
He kissed the top of her head.
“You're safe now.”
Emma looked at him.
“She didn't take her.”
Ethan looked up.
“Who?”
“Your mother.”
“Then where is she?”
Emma pointed toward the emergency exit.
“She wanted us to believe she escaped.”
Ethan frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“She never left.”
A gunshot suddenly echoed.
Everyone froze.
Daniel appeared from the smoke.
“She's here.”
Ethan stood.
“Where?”
Daniel pointed upward.
“The control room.”
They rushed upstairs.
The control room was almost destroyed.
Monitors were shattered.
Cables hung from the ceiling.
And in the center stood Ethan's mother.
She was holding the master key.
But she wasn't alone.
Richard was standing beside her.
Both looked exhausted.
Richard's face was covered in blood.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Let Lily go.”
His mother looked at him.
“I never wanted to hurt her.”
“You kidnapped her.”
“I needed her.”
“For what?”
“To finish what your father started.”
Richard laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
Ethan looked at him.
“I'm done listening to you.”
Richard pointed toward the remaining monitor.
“Look.”
The screen flickered.
A single file appeared.
PROJECT EVE: FINAL PROTOCOL
Ethan frowned.
“What is that?”
His mother answered:
“The final stage.”
“What final stage?”
Richard smiled.
“The children were never the weapon.”
Ethan looked at Lily.
“Then what is?”
Richard pointed toward Ethan.
“You.”
Silence.
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
“Your DNA completes the sequence.”
Ethan stared.
“That's impossible.”
His mother shook her head.
“It isn't.”
“You told me Lily and Claire were the keys.”
“They are.”
“And me?”
“You are the lock.”
Ethan's expression changed.
Richard continued:
“The seven children contain fragments of the sequence.”
“And I?”
“You carry the original genetic pattern.”
Ethan suddenly remembered the archive.
The master key.
The DNA matches.
The disease that wasn't real.
Everything had been designed around him.
Richard smiled.
“For years, we thought Evelyn was the key.”
He looked toward the doorway.
Evelyn appeared.
“She wasn't.”
Ethan looked at her.
“She was the first failed attempt to reproduce your genetic pattern.”
Evelyn's eyes filled with anger.
“I was never a failure.”
Richard ignored her.
“Ethan was.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“What do you mean?”
“You weren't supposed to survive.”
His mother looked down.
“But you did.”
Ethan stared at her.
“Why did you hide me?”
“Because Richard wanted to use you.”
“And you?”
“I wanted to protect you.”
“You erased my memories.”
“To protect you.”
“You lied about my life.”
“To protect you.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“To protect you.”
Ethan's voice broke.
“That's not protection.”
His mother began crying.
“I know.”
For the first time, she looked genuinely broken.
“I made a terrible mistake.”
Richard turned toward her.
“You're getting sentimental.”
She looked at him.
“I'm done.”
Richard's smile disappeared.
“What?”
“I won't do this anymore.”
She dropped the master key.
It hit the floor.
Richard immediately reached for it.
Daniel fired.
The bullet struck Richard's hand.
He screamed.
The key slid across the floor.
Ethan grabbed it.
Richard looked at him with pure hatred.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“You don't understand what you're holding.”
“I understand enough.”
Richard raised his weapon with his injured hand.
Before he could fire, his own mother stepped in front of Ethan.
Richard froze.
“Move.”
“No.”
“You'll die.”
She looked at Ethan.
“Maybe I deserve to.”
Richard fired.
The bullet struck her.
Ethan caught her as she fell.
“Mom!”
She looked at him.
For the first time in years, Ethan saw the woman from his childhood.
Not the architect of Halcyon.
Not the woman behind the lies.
Just his mother.
“I am sorry.”
Ethan held her tightly.
“Why?”
She smiled weakly.
“Because I should have chosen you.”
Her eyes closed.
Ethan looked up.
Richard was gone.
“Where is he?”
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
“Gone.”
Emma entered the room.
“Ethan.”
He stood.
“We have to go.”
He looked at his mother.
Then at Lily.
Then Claire.
Anna.
Evelyn.
The seven children.
All alive.
The archive was destroyed.
But one question remained.
“What happens now?”
Evelyn answered.
“We expose everything.”
Ethan nodded.
“The names.”
Emma nodded.
“The hospitals.”
Daniel added:
“The people who funded Halcyon.”
Ethan looked at the master key.
“And Richard.”
A faint alarm sounded.
Daniel checked the monitor.
“Police.”
Ethan looked surprised.
“Who called them?”
Emma smiled.
“I did.”
Within minutes, the building was surrounded.
Richard was found hiding in an underground maintenance tunnel.
He tried to escape.
But he didn't get far.
As police officers dragged him outside, he looked at Ethan.
“This isn't over.”
Ethan stared at him.
“Yes.”
He looked toward Lily.
“It is.”
Richard was taken away.
Months passed.
The Halcyon investigation became one of the largest scandals in the country.
Thousands of files were recovered.
Families discovered the truth about children who had disappeared.
Hospitals were investigated.
Doctors were arrested.
Executives were charged.
And the seven girls were finally given real identities.
Anna stayed with Emma.
Evelyn became their protector.
The other children were placed with families carefully chosen by the authorities.
Lily stayed with Ethan.
Claire stayed too.
One evening, Ethan sat on the balcony of their new home.
The city lights stretched across the horizon.
Lily climbed onto the chair beside him.
“Daddy?”
“Yeah?”
“Are we safe now?”
Ethan looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Forever?”
He smiled.
“I'll do everything I can.”
She rested her head against his shoulder.
“That's enough.”
Ethan kissed her forehead.
Behind them, Emma stood in the doorway.
She smiled.
For the first time in years, there were no guards.
No secret cameras.
No locked doors.
No hidden laboratories.
Just a family.
A broken family.
But finally, an honest one.
Then Ethan noticed something on the table.
A small envelope.
No name.
No address.
His smile disappeared.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
The seven girls stood together.
But there was another child in the picture.
A little boy.
Ethan turned the photograph over.
Three words were written on the back.
SUBJECT 44 LIVES.
Ethan's blood ran cold.
Emma walked closer.
“What is it?”
Ethan slowly handed her the photograph.
She stared at it.
Her face turned pale.
“No…”
“What?”
Emma looked at him.
“I thought he was dead.”
“Who?”
She pointed at the boy.
“The child Richard was most afraid of.”
Ethan looked at the photograph again.
“Why?”
Emma whispered:
“Because Subject 44 wasn't created by Halcyon.”
She looked toward the dark city.
“He created Halcyon.”

And somewhere far away, a phone began to ring.
