Chapter 8 - The Hidden FortuneCharlotte covered her mouth.

The gas burned her lungs.

Mara rushed toward the window.

Locked.

Daniel collapsed near the doorway.

Victoria shouted for help.

Charlotte searched the room.

There had to be an emergency ventilation switch.

Her mother wouldn't have lived in a trap.

She spotted a painting.

A portrait of Eleanor.

Its frame was slightly crooked.

Charlotte pulled it down.

Behind it was a metal panel.

"Here!"

She opened it.

Inside were switches.

One labeled:

PURGE

Charlotte flipped it.

Nothing happened.

She flipped another.

The gas ventilation activated.

Air rushed through the room.

Everyone coughed.

Margaret had disappeared.

Charlotte ran after her.

The hallway was empty.

A service door stood open.

She followed.

It led into the basement.

There, she found Margaret's suitcase.

Inside were passports.

Millions in cash.

And a hard drive.

Charlotte opened the drive on the nearest computer.

Thousands of documents appeared.

Bank accounts.

Offshore entities.

Political donations.

Secret agreements.

And one folder labeled:

ELEANOR'S SECRET

Charlotte clicked it.

A video appeared.

Her mother.

Again.

Charlotte pressed play.

Eleanor looked directly into the camera.

"My daughter."

Charlotte's eyes filled.

"If you're seeing this, Margaret has finally revealed herself."

Charlotte stopped breathing.

Eleanor continued.

"The Solmere Empire is not worth what the world believes."

Charlotte closed her eyes.

"I know."

"No."

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"Listen carefully."

"The debt is real."

Charlotte stared at the screen.

"But there is another asset."

A map appeared.

Coordinates.

A remote island.

Eleanor continued.

"Your grandfather acquired this island through a private agreement."

Charlotte frowned.

"It's worth?"

"More than the entire debt."

Charlotte's jaw dropped.

"Why was it hidden?"

"Because what is underneath it is worth more than money."

The video cut.

A second file opened automatically.

Blueprints.

Charlotte stared.

Underground facilities.

Storage vaults.

Laboratories.

A massive structure beneath the island.

Daniel stepped closer.

"What is that?"

Charlotte shook her head.

"I don't know."

Mara's expression changed.

"I do."

Everyone looked at her.

Mara whispered:

"The Vale Foundation."

Charlotte frowned.

"My family never had a foundation."

"Your family did."

Mara stared at the blueprints.

"Your grandfather funded weapons research."

Charlotte stepped back.

"Weapons?"

"Not for war."

Mara pointed to a symbol.

"Energy storage."

Daniel looked confused.

Mara continued.

"Your grandfather believed he could create a clean energy system capable of powering entire cities."

Charlotte stared.

"That would be worth trillions."

"Exactly."

Silence.

Charlotte suddenly understood.

The Solmere Empire wasn't merely a hotel company.

The hotels were a cover.

The real family fortune was hidden beneath an island.

And Margaret had spent decades trying to control it.

Charlotte looked at the documents.

"We need to go there."

Mara nodded.

"But you're not ready."

Charlotte smiled.

"I've been ready since my mother died."

Then Charlotte noticed something.

One folder on the computer was still locked.

Its title was:

PROJECT EDEN

Daniel leaned closer.

"Can you open it?"

Charlotte entered her mother's birthday.

Denied.

Her father's birthday.

Denied.

Her own birthday.

Denied.

Nothing.

Then she remembered Eleanor's final letter.

Family is all we have.

Charlotte entered:

VALE

The system unlocked.

A single video appeared.

Charlotte clicked it.

A man appeared.

Her father.

Alive.

Older than Charlotte remembered.

Standing inside the underground facility.

Charlotte stopped breathing.

Her father looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, Charlotte..."

He smiled.

"I failed to protect you."

Charlotte whispered:

"Dad?"

May you like

His next words shattered everything.

"But I'm still alive."
