Chapter 1 - The Woman on the Marble FloorThe lobby of the Solmere Hotel had been designed to make ordinary people feel small.

Three stories of white Italian marble rose beneath crystal chandeliers. Towering orchids stood in silver vases. A grand staircase curved upward toward private suites reserved for diplomats, celebrities, and billionaires who never carried their own luggage.

Tonight, every person inside looked powerful.

Until Charlotte Vale hit the floor.

Her shoulder struck the marble first.

Pain exploded through her body.

Before she could push herself up, a hand twisted into the back of her tank top and dragged her several feet across the lobby.

A gasp rippled through the crowd.

Charlotte's palms scraped against the stone.

The woman pulling her wore a flawless white silk gown, diamond earrings, and a necklace worth more than most apartments.

Victoria Ashford.

Society darling.

Heiress.

The woman currently pretending Charlotte was dirt beneath her shoes.

"Get out!" Victoria screamed.

Charlotte coughed and tasted blood.

"Let go of me."

Victoria laughed.

"You actually have the nerve to argue?"

She yanked Charlotte upright only to shove her again.

Charlotte stumbled.

Several guests looked away.

Nobody helped.

A hotel employee took one step forward, then froze when Victoria glared at him.

"She stole access to a private event," Victoria said loudly. "She forced her way into the hotel."

Charlotte stared at her.

"That's a lie."

Victoria smiled.

"Then tell everyone who you are."

Charlotte's jaw tightened.

That was the problem.

She couldn't.

Not yet.

Three weeks earlier, Charlotte Vale had been standing beside her mother's hospital bed.

Her mother, Eleanor Vale, had been the last public face of the Solmere Empire.

For decades, Eleanor had managed the family's hotels, resorts, private clubs, and investment companies.

When she died unexpectedly, everyone called it a tragic medical event.

Charlotte didn't believe them.

Because two days before Eleanor died, she had sent Charlotte a message.

Trust no one inside Solmere.

Then another.

They will say I left everything to the board. Don't believe them.

And finally, one attachment.

A photograph of a sealed legal document.

Charlotte had stared at it for hours.

The document contained a name.

Her name.

Charlotte Vale was not merely Eleanor's daughter.

She was the sole beneficiary of the Solmere Empire.

But the transfer had never been announced.

Because someone had made sure it disappeared.

Charlotte spent the next three weeks investigating.

She discovered shell companies.

Forged signatures.

Hidden accounts.

Security footage that had mysteriously vanished.

And one name appeared again and again.

Richard Ashford.

Chairman of Solmere Holdings.

Victoria's father.

The same man publicly mourning Eleanor's death while quietly positioning himself to control everything Eleanor had built.

Charlotte had realized one terrifying truth.

If Richard knew she had discovered the documents, she would never be allowed to reach the company headquarters alive.

So she disappeared.

She changed her phone.

Changed her appearance.

Stopped using credit cards.

And tonight, dressed in jeans and a cheap tank top, she entered the Solmere Hotel as an ordinary guest.

She had come for one reason.

To retrieve the original ownership papers hidden inside the hotel's executive archive.

She almost succeeded.

Until Victoria saw her.

Now Charlotte stood surrounded by hundreds of people who had no idea whose hotel they were standing inside.

Victoria approached her.

"You know what your problem is?"

Charlotte wiped blood from her lip.

"What?"

"You think being stubborn makes you important."

Victoria leaned closer.

"People like you don't belong in places like this."

Charlotte looked around.

At the chandeliers.

At the marble.

At the Solmere emblem engraved above the reception desk.

Then she looked back at Victoria.

"You have no idea where you are standing."

Victoria smirked.

"Oh, I know exactly where I am."

A few guests laughed.

Charlotte said quietly, "So do I."

Victoria's smile vanished for half a second.

Then she grabbed Charlotte by the arm.

"Security!"

Two guards hurried forward.

Charlotte's pulse jumped.

The guards wore Solmere uniforms.

Her mother's uniforms.

For years, Charlotte had watched those uniforms represent safety.

Now they were being used against her.

"Remove her," Victoria ordered.

One guard reached for Charlotte.

Then the lobby doors opened.

A middle-aged man in a charcoal suit stepped inside.

He stopped immediately.

His eyes landed on Charlotte.

His expression changed.

The color drained from his face.

Charlotte recognized him.

Daniel Mercer.

Solmere's chief legal counsel.

The man who had handled her mother's estate.

The man she had believed was loyal.

Daniel stared at her as though he'd seen a ghost.

"Charlotte..."

The entire lobby went silent.

Victoria blinked.

"What did you call her?"

Daniel didn't answer.

He looked at the guards.

"Do not touch her."

Victoria laughed nervously.

"Daniel, she's a trespasser."

Daniel's eyes never left Charlotte.

Then he whispered the words that changed everything.

"That's Charlotte Vale."

Victoria scoffed.

"So?"

Daniel swallowed.

"Charlotte Vale is the daughter of Eleanor Vale."

"I know."

"No," Daniel said.

"You don't understand."

He turned toward the crowd.

And his voice trembled.

"She is the registered heir to Solmere Holdings."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Victoria's smile disappeared.

Charlotte looked at the hotel emblem above them.

For the first time that night, she allowed herself to breathe.

Then the elevator behind Daniel chimed.

A man stepped out.

Richard Ashford.

Victoria's father.

And the moment he saw Charlotte standing in the middle of his hotel...

his face went completely white.

Charlotte smiled.

"Hello, Richard."

The old man's expression hardened.

May you like

Because he knew exactly what her return meant.

The war for Solmere had officially begun.
