Chapter 14 - The Truth About Charlotte ValeCharlotte stood motionless.

"What did she mean?"
Her father said nothing.
Eleanor began crying.
Charlotte looked at her.
"Tell me."
Eleanor whispered:
"Your father was killed before you were born."
Charlotte stared.
The man she called her father stepped forward.
"My name is Michael."
He removed a small photograph.
It showed Eleanor beside another man.
Charlotte had never seen him.
"Your biological father was James Vale."
The man she believed to be her father was Eleanor's security chief.
"He died protecting you," Michael said.
Charlotte shook her head.
"Then why did you pretend?"
"Because Margaret was searching for you."
Eleanor spoke through tears.
"James left enemies behind."
Charlotte looked at the photograph.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because you were six."
"You could have told me later."
"We tried."
Evelyn laughed.
"You never did."
Charlotte turned toward her.
"You knew?"
"Of course."
Evelyn smiled.
"I knew everything."
Charlotte suddenly understood.
The mysterious woman.
The family secrets.
The forged records.
The hidden ownership.
All of it had been designed around one purpose.
Charlotte.
Not Solmere.
Her.
Evelyn wanted control of Charlotte because Charlotte was the only person legally capable of unlocking the hidden family trust.
Charlotte looked at the trust documents.
"What happens now?"
Evelyn's smile faded.
"Now you discover why your mother really chose you."
Charlotte frowned.
Eleanor reached into her coat.
She handed Charlotte a sealed envelope.
"Your father left this."
Charlotte opened it.
A single sentence was written inside.
When Charlotte turns twenty-one, show her the vault beneath Solmere Tower.
Charlotte looked at the date.
She had turned twenty-one two months ago.
Her heart pounded.
"There is another vault."
Eleanor nodded.
"Yes."
"What's inside?"
"Everything."
Charlotte looked at Evelyn.
"You've been trying to reach it."
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
"For twenty years."
"Then why couldn't you?"
"Because only James's daughter can open it."
Charlotte laughed softly.
"So this whole war..."
"Was about you."
Suddenly the building shook.
Glass shattered.
A distant explosion rocked the tower.
Victoria screamed.
Daniel rushed to the window.
"Someone is attacking the building."
Charlotte looked at the security feed.
Dozens of armed men were entering the lobby.
Evelyn stared at the screen.
Her face changed.
"I didn't order that."
Charlotte looked at her.
"Then who did?"
A new voice came through the speakers.
Deep.
Calm.
Unknown.
"Charlotte Vale."
Everyone froze.
"You've spent your entire life believing this was a family war."
The voice continued.
"It wasn't."
Charlotte stared at the ceiling.
"Who are you?"
A pause.
Then:
"The man who funded your grandfather."
Her father went pale.
Eleanor whispered:
"No."
Charlotte looked at her.
"Who is it?"
Eleanor stared at the security monitor.
"The original owner."
Charlotte's blood ran cold.
The voice continued.
"And Charlotte..."
The lobby doors exploded open.
