Chapter 8 The Boardroom Betrayal

Marcus stared toward the Dallas skyline, though it was miles away.
He wasn't thinking about the cyberattack.
Or the Lamborghini.
Or even the false police dispatch.
He was thinking about one sentence.
"Tell Ellington we opened the wrong vault."
Someone had told the hacker.
Someone close enough to know the truth.
Someone inside his own company.
Jonathan Pierce stepped beside him.
"You're already making a list."
Marcus nodded.
"I've been making it for six months."
Jonathan looked surprised.
"You suspected an insider that long ago?"
Marcus answered quietly.
"I hoped I was wrong."
Captain Whitaker folded his notebook shut.
"Mr. Ellington."
"Yes, Captain?"
"I don't want to interfere."
"But if there's a leak inside your company..."
"...my detectives need immediate access."
Marcus nodded.
"You'll have it."
Jonathan handed Whitaker a secure business card.
"Call this number."
"It connects directly to our internal investigations unit."
Whitaker looked at the card.
Ellington Integrity Office.
He raised an eyebrow.
"You have your own investigators?"
Jonathan smiled faintly.
"When a company works with governments across forty-three states..."
"...it learns to investigate itself before someone else has to."
Marcus checked his watch.
The board meeting had already started.
"They're waiting."
Jonathan frowned.
"Should we postpone?"
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
"If there's an insider..."
"...I want everyone in the same room."
Whitaker looked at him.
"You still intend to attend?"
Marcus smiled.
"Captain..."
"If someone spent millions trying to keep me away..."
"...the last thing I'm going to do is stay away."
Ellington Mobility Systems Headquarters
Forty minutes later.
The headquarters rose above downtown Dallas like a tower of black glass.
Television crews had already gathered outside.
News of the Lamborghini incident had spread nationwide.
Employees stood near the lobby windows, whispering as Marcus's motorcade arrived.
When he stepped out...
No one applauded.
No one rushed toward him.
Instead, hundreds of employees simply watched.
Their CEO gave each of them the same small nod he always did.
Security guards.
Receptionists.
Engineers.
Janitors.
He knew many by name.
That was one reason employees stayed.
Marcus entered through the revolving doors.
The receptionist stood immediately.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Ellington."
"Good afternoon, Sarah."
"You've had quite a day."
Marcus smiled.
"So I've been told."
The elevator doors closed.
Only Marcus and Jonathan remained inside.
Jonathan finally asked the question he'd been holding back.
"Do you really think it's Richard?"
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at the elevator display as the floors counted upward.
"Richard wants money."
"That's predictable."
"The people behind today wanted control."
"That's different."
"So?"
Marcus finally looked at him.
"I think Richard knows less than he believes."
Executive Boardroom
The room fell silent as Marcus entered.
Eleven directors sat around the walnut table.
Some looked relieved.
Others nervous.
One avoided eye contact completely.
Richard Dawson.
Marcus noticed immediately.
He always noticed.
"Good afternoon," Marcus said calmly.
No mention of the Lamborghini.
No mention of the police.
No mention of the news helicopters circling outside.
He simply took his seat.
Susan Alvarez spoke first.
"Marcus..."
"We've all seen the news."
Marcus nodded.
"I'm sure you have."
Richard leaned forward.
"Shouldn't we discuss the public relations disaster?"
Marcus looked directly at him.
"Is that what concerns you most?"
Richard hesitated.
"It's certainly important."
Marcus smiled faintly.
"I disagree."
He pressed a button on the conference table.
The large screen behind him illuminated.
Not with news coverage.
Not with stock prices.
A single title appeared.
UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS REPORT
The room became still.
Marcus looked around the table.
"This morning..."
"...someone attempted to steal the Sentinel Project."
Several directors gasped.
Others exchanged worried glances.
Richard remained perfectly still.
Too still.
Marcus continued.
"They failed."
Relief swept through the room.
Except for Richard.
His expression didn't change.
Marcus noticed.
Jonathan dimmed the lights.
A timeline appeared on the screen.
10:42 AM
Emergency call received.
10:43 AM
Dispatch altered.
10:47 AM
Cyberattack begins.
11:02 AM
CEO delayed.
11:05 AM
Second intrusion.
11:11 AM
Fake Sentinel files downloaded.
Marcus let everyone study the timeline.
Then asked one simple question.
"What do all these events have in common?"
Silence.
Finally Susan answered.
"They happened at the same time."
Marcus nodded.
"Correct."
Another director spoke.
"They were coordinated."
"Also correct."
Marcus folded his hands.
"So here's my question."
He slowly scanned every face around the table.
"Who knew my schedule today?"
The silence became heavier.
Jonathan answered.
"The executive calendar was restricted."
Marcus nodded.
"How many people had access?"
Jonathan looked at his tablet.
"Seven."
Marcus smiled sadly.
"The same number of people who knew about Vault Seven."
Richard's fingers tightened beneath the table.
Barely noticeable.
Marcus noticed anyway.
Captain Whitaker and Detective Laura Bennett entered quietly through the rear door.
Every board member looked surprised.
Marcus stood.
"I've invited law enforcement to observe today's meeting."
Richard frowned.
"Observe?"
Marcus nodded.
"No one is under arrest."
"Not yet."
The words landed heavily.
Whitaker took a seat against the wall.
Laura opened her laptop.
Neither spoke.
They simply watched.
Marcus reached into his briefcase.
He removed a small wooden box.
Old.
Worn.
Handmade.
Susan smiled.
"I haven't seen that in years."
Marcus opened the lid.
Inside lay seven identical brass keys.
Each engraved with a name.
Whitaker looked confused.
"What are those?"
Marcus answered.
"When Harold Ellington died..."
"...he gave every senior executive one of these."
Richard stared at his key.
He hadn't touched it in years.
Marcus continued.
"He told us something I'll never forget."
Marcus picked up his own key.
"'A company isn't protected by locks.'"
"'It's protected by the people trusted with the keys.'"
The room fell silent.
Marcus looked around one final time.
Then said quietly,
"Today..."
"...one of those keys unlocked the wrong door."
At that exact moment, Laura Bennett's laptop chimed.
She looked down.
Her eyes widened.
"Captain."
Whitaker stood.
"What is it?"
Laura slowly turned the screen toward Marcus.
"We've identified the remote login."
Jonathan stepped closer.
"From where?"
Laura swallowed.
"It wasn't from Langford Dynamics."
The room froze.
Marcus looked at the screen.
Then at Richard.
Then back to the screen.
"The login originated..."
Laura finished the sentence.
"...from inside this building."
She zoomed in.
Floor.
Room number.
Network port.
Every detail appeared.
It pointed to exactly one office.
Executive Office 14B.
Richard Dawson's office.
Every head in the room turned toward him.
May you like
Richard's face went completely white.
