Chapter 7 The File That Was Never There

For the first time all afternoon...

Marcus Ellington looked genuinely concerned.

Not frightened.

Concerned.

He stared at the tablet for several seconds before handing it back to the young analyst.

"Run the verification again."

The analyst nodded immediately.

"I already did."

"Run it a third time."

"Yes, sir."

He hurried back to the SUV.

Jonathan Pierce stepped closer.

"If they copied Sentinel..."

Marcus interrupted him.

"They didn't."

Jonathan frowned.

"You just said..."

"I said they believe they copied Sentinel."

Whitaker looked confused.

"There's a difference?"

Marcus turned toward him.

"A very important one."

The analyst returned less than two minutes later.

"The results are identical."

Marcus asked only one question.

"Did they access Vault Seven?"

The analyst blinked.

"No."

Marcus nodded.

"Then we're fine."

Jonathan finally understood.

His shoulders relaxed.

"You moved it."

Marcus gave a slight smile.

"Three years ago."

Whitaker looked between them.

"I'm missing something."

Marcus gestured toward a nearby bench.

"Captain, have you ever kept a spare house key under the doormat?"

Whitaker nodded.

"When I was younger."

"And where would the real valuables be?"

"...Inside the safe."

Marcus smiled.

"Exactly."

Jonathan couldn't help laughing.

"The Sentinel architecture stored on our corporate servers..."

"...isn't Sentinel."

Whitaker frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"It's bait."

Officer Collins stared.

"Bait?"

Marcus nodded.

"If someone illegally enters our system..."

"...they're guided toward documents that appear authentic."

"They're complete."

"They're professionally written."

"They even contain source code."

Collins slowly realized what Marcus was describing.

"A decoy."

Marcus smiled.

"Exactly."

Jonathan added,

"Every serious cyber defense program uses deception."

Marcus continued.

"The fake architecture is designed to answer one question."

Whitaker asked,

"Which is?"

"Who's trying to steal it."

Across the plaza...

Victor Langford remained perfectly still.

But inside...

His thoughts raced.

Impossible.

He had paid millions for the operation.

The hackers had assured him the files were genuine.

He studied Marcus carefully.

Was he bluffing?

Or had they truly stolen a fake system?

He couldn't tell.

Marcus had always been impossible to read.

Detective Laura Bennett stepped forward.

"Mr. Ellington."

Marcus turned.

"If what you're saying is true..."

"...can you prove the files are fake?"

Marcus answered calmly.

"Not yet."

"Why not?"

"Because proving they're fake would reveal how the real system works."

Laura nodded.

"Fair point."

Marcus continued.

"But I can prove something else."

"What?"

"I knew this attack was coming."

Whitaker raised an eyebrow.

"You did?"

Marcus nodded.

"Not today specifically."

"But eventually."

Jonathan reached into his briefcase.

He removed a sealed envelope.

Its edges had yellowed with age.

"This was prepared eighteen months ago."

Laura examined the seal.

Unbroken.

Marcus nodded.

"Open it."

Jonathan carefully broke the seal.

Inside was a signed memorandum.

Dated eighteen months earlier.

Laura began reading aloud.

If unauthorized parties attempt to obtain Sentinel architecture, assume the objective extends beyond intellectual property. Investigate any simultaneous disruption involving emergency communications, public infrastructure, or government procurement.

She stopped.

The date was unmistakable.

Eighteen months before today's events.

Whitaker looked at Marcus.

"You predicted this?"

Marcus shook his head.

"I prepared for it."

Officer Collins spoke quietly.

"I owe you an apology."

Everyone looked toward him.

He turned to Marcus.

"When I arrived..."

"...I assumed things I shouldn't have."

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Finally, he said,

"What matters is what you do after recognizing it."

Collins nodded.

"I should have slowed down."

"I should have verified more before escalating."

Marcus extended his hand.

"We all learn."

Collins shook it.

The tension that had filled the plaza since the first command finally began to ease.

Several bystanders quietly applauded.

Not because anyone had "won."

Because two men had chosen professionalism over pride.

Just then...

Laura Bennett's phone rang.

She answered immediately.

"Detective Bennett."

Her expression changed.

"Where?"

A pause.

"When?"

Another pause.

"I'm on my way."

She lowered the phone slowly.

Whitaker recognized the look.

"What happened?"

Laura looked at Marcus.

"Our cyber unit arrested one of the hackers."

Jonathan stepped forward.

"Alive?"

Laura frowned.

"Barely."

Everyone froze.

"He was found unconscious inside a rented warehouse."

"What happened?"

Laura answered quietly.

"He wasn't attacked."

"He poisoned himself."

Marcus' eyes narrowed.

"Dead?"

"Not yet."

"But before collapsing..."

"...he managed to say one sentence."

"What was it?"

Laura looked directly at Marcus.

"He said..."

She glanced at her notes.

"...'Tell Ellington we opened the wrong vault.'"

Jonathan smiled.

"They took the bait."

Marcus didn't.

Instead...

His expression became even more serious.

Whitaker noticed immediately.

"What's wrong?"

Marcus spoke almost to himself.

"No..."

Jonathan looked confused.

"What?"

Marcus slowly turned toward him.

"If he knew they opened the wrong vault..."

"...then someone told him."

Jonathan's smile faded.

He understood instantly.

Only a handful of people knew the stolen files were fake.

Marcus.

Jonathan.

Three senior engineers.

And two board members.

Seven people.

No one else.

Marcus looked at Whitaker.

"We don't have one problem."

Whitaker frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Marcus answered quietly.

"We have an insider."

At that exact moment...

Inside Ellington Mobility Systems Headquarters...

Board member Richard Dawson stood alone in his office.

He looked around carefully before opening a locked desk drawer.

Inside lay a second phone.

One that none of his colleagues knew existed.

He dialed a single number.

The call connected immediately.

A familiar voice answered.

"Yes?"

Richard spoke softly.

"They know."

Silence.

Then the voice asked,

"How much?"

Richard swallowed.

"They know the files were fake."

Another pause.

"And Marcus?"

Richard looked out the window toward the Dallas skyline.

"He's already looking for the leak."

The voice remained calm.

"Then move to Phase Two."

Richard hesitated.

"This wasn't part of the agreement."

"It is now."

The line disconnected.

Richard slowly lowered the phone.

His hands were shaking.

Not because he feared prison.

Because for the first time...

He realized the people he had been helping were no longer interested in buying a company.

They were willing to destroy anyone standing between them and Sentinel.

May you like

Including him.
