Chapter 10 The Death That Never Made Sense

The boardroom fell into a silence so complete that even the city outside seemed to disappear.

Captain Whitaker was the first to speak.

"What do you mean?"

Marcus kept his eyes on the image of the tattoo.

"The Knight."

He tapped the screen once.

"I've seen it before."

Laura Bennett leaned closer.

"Where?"

Marcus answered quietly.

"At Harold Ellington's funeral."

Several board members exchanged confused looks.

Susan Alvarez frowned.

"Marcus..."

"There weren't any maintenance workers there."

Marcus shook his head.

"I'm not talking about the funeral service."

"I'm talking about what happened afterward."

Seven Years Earlier

Rain had fallen steadily over Dallas the day Harold Ellington was buried.

Most of the mourners left within an hour.

Marcus remained.

So did Susan.

A handful of longtime employees.

And one man.

He stood alone beneath an oak tree at the edge of the cemetery.

Black suit.

Black umbrella.

No expression.

Marcus had never seen him before.

When their eyes met...

The stranger simply nodded.

Then walked away.

As he reached a black sedan...

His sleeve slid back.

Just enough.

Marcus noticed a tattoo.

A black chess knight.

He had mentioned it to police at the time.

The detective dismissed it.

"There are hundreds of people with chess tattoos."

The investigation ended.

Official cause of death:

Massive heart attack.

Case closed.

Or so everyone believed.

Back in the present...

Whitaker folded his arms.

"You thought it was suspicious?"

Marcus nodded.

"I thought it was strange."

"Harold was healthy."

"He had a physical two weeks earlier."

Susan quietly added,

"He never missed a checkup."

Jonathan looked surprised.

"You never told me this."

Marcus smiled faintly.

"Because I had no evidence."

"I wasn't going to accuse anyone based on a tattoo."

Laura looked thoughtful.

"Until today."

Marcus nodded.

"Today the tattoo came back."

Samuel Ortiz's phone buzzed.

He answered immediately.

His expression hardened.

"What?"

A pause.

"When?"

Another pause.

"I'll tell him."

He lowered the phone.

"Mr. Ellington."

"Yes?"

"Our security archive just found something."

Marcus looked up.

"What?"

"A visitor log."

Samuel swallowed.

"Someone using a fake maintenance ID entered Executive Office 14B..."

"...six months ago."

Jonathan frowned.

"Only once?"

Samuel looked back at the report.

"No."

He took a breath.

"Nine times."

The room erupted.

"Nine?"

"How did nobody notice?"

Samuel answered honestly.

"They came after midnight."

"Different uniforms."

"Different names."

"But..."

He pointed to the screen.

"The same face."

Laura immediately requested the surveillance footage.

Minutes later, it appeared on the conference room display.

Night One.

The man entered carrying a toolbox.

Night Three.

Different uniform.

Same height.

Same walk.

Night Five.

Different beard.

Same tattoo.

Whitaker shook his head.

"He wasn't fixing anything."

Marcus answered.

"He was learning the building."

Jonathan nodded.

"Mapping cameras."

"Studying routines."

"Watching employees."

Laura added,

"And waiting."

Richard Dawson looked sick.

"He was in my office..."

"...for six months?"

Samuel corrected him.

"Not just yours."

He advanced the footage.

Engineering.

Legal.

Cybersecurity.

Executive floor.

Even Marcus's private office.

Jonathan looked alarmed.

"My office too?"

Samuel nodded.

"Twice."

Marcus remained unusually calm.

Laura noticed.

"You're not surprised."

Marcus smiled.

"I wondered when we'd find him."

Whitaker stared.

"You knew someone was inside the building?"

Marcus answered honestly.

"I knew someone was looking."

Jonathan looked at Marcus.

"You never told the board."

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I didn't know who to trust."

The words landed heavily.

No one argued.

Laura zoomed into another security frame.

"There."

The fake maintenance worker paused outside Marcus's office.

Instead of entering...

He looked directly into the security camera.

For nearly three seconds.

Almost...

Deliberately.

Whitaker frowned.

"Why would he do that?"

Marcus answered immediately.

"He wanted us to know he could."

A young IT engineer burst into the room without knocking.

"Mr. Ellington!"

Jonathan stepped toward him.

"What happened?"

The engineer was breathing hard.

"We recovered deleted security files."

Marcus nodded.

"Show us."

The engineer connected his laptop to the projector.

Several video clips appeared.

One file caught everyone's attention.

HAROLD_ARCHIVE_17

Date:

Seven years earlier.

The day Harold Ellington died.

Jonathan frowned.

"I've never seen this."

Marcus hadn't either.

The engineer pressed play.

The footage came from a hallway security camera inside company headquarters.

Harold Ellington exited his office at 8:12 p.m.

He appeared healthy.

Laughing with an employee.

He shook hands.

Walked toward the elevator.

Then...

The elevator doors opened.

A man wearing a maintenance uniform stepped out.

His face remained hidden beneath a cap.

The two men exchanged only a few words.

Harold smiled politely.

The maintenance worker handed him a small envelope.

Harold looked confused.

He opened it.

Read whatever was inside.

His smile disappeared.

He looked back up.

The maintenance worker had already walked away.

The footage ended.

Everyone stared silently.

Laura asked,

"What was in the envelope?"

Marcus answered.

"I have no idea."

Jonathan looked at the timestamp.

"Harold died less than two hours later."

Whitaker slowly turned toward Marcus.

"You think that meeting mattered."

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he watched the final frozen frame.

The maintenance worker had turned slightly just before leaving.

For the first time...

The camera captured the left side of his face.

Blurry.

But visible.

Laura enhanced the image.

Not enough for facial recognition.

But enough to reveal one unmistakable detail.

A long scar running from the left ear to the jawline.

Samuel immediately looked at Whitaker.

"I've seen that scar."

Whitaker frowned.

"Where?"

Samuel answered slowly.

"Federal bulletin."

"About five years ago."

Laura's fingers flew across her keyboard.

She searched national criminal databases.

Twenty seconds later...

A file appeared.

The photograph loaded.

Same scar.

Same tattoo.

Same height.

Same eyes.

Laura read the name aloud.

"Adrian Kane."

Jonathan frowned.

"I've never heard of him."

Laura continued reading.

"Former military intelligence."

"Private contractor."

"Wanted for corporate espionage in three countries."

Whitaker's expression darkened.

"Status?"

Laura's voice became quieter.

"Officially..."

"...deceased."

The room froze.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then slowly shook his head.

"No."

"If he was standing in this building yesterday..."

"...then someone wanted the world to believe he was dead."

Whitaker looked back at Adrian Kane's file.

One sentence near the bottom caught his attention.

He read it twice to make sure.

Then looked at Marcus.

"There's something else."

"What?"

Laura leaned closer.

"What is it, Captain?"

Whitaker swallowed.

"The last known employer listed before Kane disappeared..."

He looked directly at Victor Langford's company profile.

"...was Langford Dynamics."

The room fell into stunned silence.

For the first time...

Victor Langford was no longer just a businessman who had made a forty-two-billion-dollar offer.

May you like

He had become the first person directly connected to the man who might hold the key to Harold Ellington's mysterious death.
