Chapter 15 The Guardian Harold Never Told Anyone About

The darkness inside the underground chamber was complete.

Dust drifted through the air after the explosions above.

No one moved.

Every weapon remained raised.

Every breath sounded louder than it should.

Then the voice came again.

Calm.

Steady.

"Marcus..."

"...tell your people not to shoot."

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

He listened.

The voice carried no panic.

No anger.

Only exhaustion.

He had heard it once before.

Seven years earlier.

In a hallway security recording.

Jonathan whispered,

"Is it really him?"

Marcus answered softly.

"I think it is."

Captain Whitaker kept his pistol trained toward the darkness.

"Identify yourself."

A flashlight slowly rolled across the concrete floor.

No one touched it.

It stopped at Marcus's feet.

Then a man stepped into the faint green glow outlining the hidden vault door.

Mid-fifties.

Lean.

Gray beginning to spread through his beard.

A long scar stretched from his left ear to his jaw.

The same scar from the surveillance footage.

The same scar in the federal file.

And on his left wrist...

The black chess knight tattoo.

Officer Collins tightened his grip.

"Adrian Kane."

The man nodded once.

"That's the name they remember."

Rebecca Cole frowned.

"You're supposed to be dead."

Adrian smiled without humor.

"I've spent a long time making sure people believed that."

Whitaker spoke sharply.

"Hands where I can see them."

Adrian slowly raised both hands.

No weapon.

No sudden movement.

Marcus studied him carefully.

"You've been watching us."

Adrian nodded.

"For years."

Jonathan couldn't contain himself.

"Why?"

Adrian looked directly at Marcus.

"Because Harold asked me to."

The room fell silent.

Rebecca took one cautious step forward.

"The FBI investigated you."

"They believed you were stealing military technology."

Adrian let out a tired laugh.

"They investigated the man I pretended to be."

Whitaker frowned.

"Pretended?"

Adrian nodded.

"The government knew me as Adrian Kane."

"Harold knew my real name."

Marcus asked quietly,

"What was it?"

The man looked at him for several long seconds.

Then answered.

"Daniel Mercer."

Jonathan blinked.

"Mercer..."

Adrian nodded.

"I wasn't Harold's enemy."

"I was his head of security."

Marcus felt the ground shift beneath everything he believed.

"Harold never mentioned you."

"He couldn't."

"Why?"

"Because if anyone knew I was alive..."

"...the people hunting Sentinel would never stop."

Laura Bennett looked confused.

"Then the tattoo?"

Adrian glanced at his wrist.

"It wasn't a gang."

"It wasn't a secret society."

"It's a chess piece."

Marcus smiled faintly.

"The Knight."

Adrian nodded.

"Harold loved chess."

"He said a king survives because someone is willing to stand between danger and the throne."

"The knight."

Whitaker lowered his weapon slightly.

"If you've been protecting this place..."

"...why disappear?"

Adrian answered simply.

"Because Harold died."

"I failed him once."

"I wasn't going to fail Marcus too."

Jonathan looked around the chamber.

"Then who attacked the depot?"

Adrian's face hardened.

"They're not after the archive."

Marcus frowned.

"They're after you."

Adrian nodded.

"They know Harold trusted you."

"They think you know the final key."

Marcus looked toward the hidden vault.

"I don't."

Adrian gave the slightest smile.

"You do."

Marcus frowned.

"I've never opened this vault."

"You don't need to."

Adrian pointed toward Harold's notebook still tucked beneath Marcus's arm.

"It's already in your hands."

Jonathan looked confused.

"The map?"

Adrian shook his head.

"The letter."

Marcus unfolded Harold's letter again.

He had read it three times already.

Nothing new appeared.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Read the first letter of every sentence."

Marcus paused.

Then slowly wrote them down.

The initials formed a single word.

NOAH

Jonathan stared.

"What does that mean?"

Marcus whispered,

"Noah..."

His face changed.

He suddenly remembered.

Twenty years earlier.

The old depot had one retired city bus everyone called Noah.

Not because of the Bible.

Because mechanics joked it was old enough to survive a flood.

Bus 218.

The very bus that had hidden the entrance.

Marcus looked at Adrian.

"The bus."

Adrian nodded.

"You found the door."

"But you never looked inside the bus."

Before anyone could react...

Another explosion shook the depot.

Concrete cracked above them.

Rebecca checked her watch.

"SWAT should be here."

Adrian quietly shook his head.

"They won't make it."

Whitaker looked up sharply.

"Why?"

"They blocked every road within two miles."

Laura stared.

"How many people are out there?"

Adrian answered.

"More than twenty."

Collins looked toward Marcus.

"We're trapped."

Marcus remained surprisingly calm.

"No."

He looked at Adrian.

"Harold built another exit."

Adrian smiled.

"He really did teach you."

Marcus climbed back into Bus 218.

This time he ignored the floor panel.

Instead he walked to the very last passenger seat.

He knelt.

Ran his fingers beneath the cracked cushion.

There.

A tiny brass latch.

He pulled it.

The entire rear wall of the bus quietly swung inward.

Jonathan laughed in disbelief.

"A second passage."

Marcus smiled.

"Harold hated dead ends."

As everyone prepared to move...

Adrian remained where he stood.

Marcus noticed.

"Aren't you coming?"

Adrian looked toward the staircase leading back to the depot.

"They're expecting to find someone guarding the vault."

Marcus understood immediately.

"They'll kill you."

Adrian smiled.

"I've been dead for seven years."

Rebecca stepped forward.

"We're not leaving you."

Adrian looked at her.

"If all of us leave..."

"...they'll follow."

Whitaker shook his head.

"There has to be another way."

Adrian quietly removed a small metal key from around his neck.

He handed it to Marcus.

"This opens the real archive."

Marcus looked down at the worn brass key.

Harold's initials were engraved into it.

"H.E."

Adrian closed Marcus's hand around the key.

"Harold was right about you."

Marcus's voice was almost a whisper.

"What did he say?"

Adrian smiled.

"He said..."

"One day Marcus will understand that the greatest invention we ever built won't be software."

Marcus waited.

Adrian finished the sentence.

"It will be the people who refuse to sell their principles."

For a brief moment, neither man spoke.

Then distant shouting echoed from above.

Flashlights swept across the staircase.

"They're here!" someone yelled.

Adrian looked toward the sound.

Then back at Marcus.

"Go."

Marcus hesitated.

Adrian smiled one last time.

"This time..."

"...let the knight protect the king."

Marcus nodded once.

No speeches.

No promises.

Just respect.

He led the group through the hidden passage as Adrian stepped toward the stairway alone.

Seconds later...

The first gunshots echoed through the underground chamber.

Marcus stopped.

His hand tightened around Harold's brass key.

Then, from somewhere deep inside the newly opened tunnel, a mechanical voice suddenly came to life.

"Identity confirmed."

The narrow passage illuminated with soft white lights stretching into the darkness.

And at the very end of the tunnel...

Behind a wall of reinforced glass...

Sat a single steel case labeled:

PROJECT FOUNDATION

Marcus stared at it in disbelief.

Everything they had fought to protect.

Everything Victor Langford had spent seven years trying to find.

Everything Harold had sacrificed his life to hide.

It had never been Sentinel.

Sentinel had only been the first chapter.
