Chapter 9: The Son of the Enemy

For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The underground room that held twenty years of secrets had become a place of silence.
Daniel Cross stood frozen.
Victor Vale’s son.
The words repeated in his mind.
Again.
And again.
Like a machine refusing to shut down.
He looked at Thomas Blake.
Then at Marcus.
Then at Lily.
Waiting for someone to laugh.
Waiting for someone to say it was a mistake.
A cruel trick.
Anything.
But nobody did.
Because the truth had already entered the room.
And once the truth arrived, there was nowhere left to hide.
“No.”
Daniel finally spoke.
His voice was low.
“No, that’s impossible.”
Thomas looked at him with tired eyes.
“I wish it was.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You’re telling me Victor Vale is my father?”
Thomas nodded.
Daniel laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“That’s ridiculous.”
Marcus looked down.
“Daniel…”
“No.”
Daniel turned toward him.
“You knew?”
Marcus remained silent.
That silence answered everything.
Daniel’s face changed.
“You knew.”
Marcus slowly nodded.
“I suspected.”
“How long?”
Marcus looked away.
“Years.”
The betrayal hit harder than expected.
Daniel had just learned his entire identity was different from what he believed.
And now he discovered the people closest to him knew pieces of it.
Pieces they kept from him.
“Everyone knew except me.”
Thomas shook his head.
“Not everyone.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Emily knew.”
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.”
“And she never told me.”
Thomas looked down.
“She wanted to.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Then why didn’t she?”
Thomas took a breath.
“Because she was afraid of what would happen if you knew.”
Daniel stared.
“Afraid of me?”
“No.”
Thomas looked directly at him.
“Afraid of what you would become.”
The words hurt.
Because Daniel had spent his whole life trying to be different from people like Victor.
A good man.
A man who protected others.
A man who didn’t abuse power.
But now someone was telling him that the blood he hated was running through his veins.
Lily slowly walked closer.
“Mr. Daniel…”
He looked at her.
The fear in her eyes broke something inside him.
Because she wasn’t looking at him like a monster.
She was looking at him like someone who needed help.
“I’m still me.”
The words came out before he realized he said them.
Lily nodded.
“I know.”
Daniel looked surprised.
“How?”
She shrugged slightly.
“Because bad people don’t hide under tables to save little girls.”
The simple answer nearly destroyed him.
For twenty years, Daniel had believed a person was defined by where they came from.
Now a seven-year-old girl reminded him of something he had forgotten.
People were defined by what they chose.
Not what they inherited.
Thomas walked toward the table.
“There’s more.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Of course there is.”
Thomas ignored the bitterness.
“Victor had another reason for hiding you.”
“What?”
“He wasn’t protecting you.”
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
“Then what?”
Thomas opened a folder.
Inside were old documents.
Birth records.
DNA reports.
Letters.
Daniel picked up the first page.
His hands slowly tightened.
“This…”
Thomas nodded.
“The official records were changed.”
Daniel looked up.
“Why?”
“Because Victor wanted everyone to believe you didn’t exist.”
“Why?”
Thomas hesitated.
“Because you were never supposed to inherit anything.”
Daniel frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Marcus stepped forward.
“Victor had three children.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Three?”
“Yourself. Ethan. And another daughter.”
Daniel stared.
“Ethan knew?”
Thomas nodded.
“He always knew.”
A cold feeling moved through Daniel.
Ethan.
The man who hunted Lily.
The man who stood in the diner.
The man who looked at him with hatred.
“He knew I was his brother.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked away.
“Then why did he hate me?”
Thomas answered quietly.
“Because Victor chose you.”
Silence.
Daniel turned back.
“What?”
Thomas continued.
“Victor believed you had something Ethan didn’t.”
“What?”
“Honor.”
The word sounded strange coming from Thomas.
“He saw potential in you.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Victor Vale saw honor?”
Thomas nodded.
“That’s what made Ethan hate you.”
Daniel looked at the files.
His whole life was changing piece by piece.
“But if Victor was my father…”
He looked at Marcus.
“Why was I never with him?”
Marcus answered.
“Because your mother took you away.”
Daniel froze.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“Who was she?”
Thomas looked at the floor.
“Someone Victor destroyed.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Tell me.”
Thomas hesitated.
“Her name was Anna Vale.”
The name meant nothing.
But somehow it felt familiar.
“She was Victor’s first wife.”
Daniel looked at him.
“And my mother?”
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.”
Marcus added quietly:
“She tried to escape the Vale family.”
Daniel looked at Lily.
“Like Emily.”
Marcus nodded.
“Exactly.”
The pattern became clear.
Women who discovered too much.
People who tried to leave.
Families destroyed by power.
Daniel suddenly understood something.
Victor wasn’t just hunting Lily because of evidence.
He was hunting her because she represented a failure.
A reminder that people could escape him.
A reminder that his control was never complete.
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“You need to understand something.”
Daniel waited.
“Victor didn’t become powerful because people respected him.”
Thomas’s voice became darker.
“They feared him.”
Daniel looked at the old files.
“And now he fears me.”
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Thomas answered:
“Because you are the only person who knows where he buried his first mistake.”
Daniel frowned.
“What mistake?”
Thomas looked at Lily.
“Your mother.”
Daniel felt a chill.
“What about Anna?”
Thomas took out another document.
A death certificate.
Daniel stared.
His expression changed.
Anna Vale.
Cause of death.
Unknown.
Date.
Twenty years ago.
The same year Emily disappeared.
Daniel slowly looked up.
“What are you saying?”
Thomas whispered:
“Your mother didn’t die naturally.”
The room became silent.
“She was killed.”
Lily covered her mouth.
Daniel felt something inside him break.
Another person.
Another life.
Another secret.
All connected to Victor Vale.
“How many people did he destroy?”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew the answer.
Too many.
Suddenly, a loud sound echoed from above.
A door opening.
Then another.
Someone had entered the building.
Marcus looked toward the tunnel.
“They found us.”
Thomas immediately moved.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“You need to decide something.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
Thomas stared at him.
“You can keep running from the Vale name.”
A pause.
“Or you can use it against the man who created it.”
Daniel looked down at Lily.
His daughter.
Then at the files.
His past.
His blood.
His enemy.
For twenty years, Daniel Cross believed his greatest battle was against Victor Vale.
But now he understood.
The real battle was inside himself.
Could he carry the name Vale without becoming like him?
Could he destroy an empire built by his own father?
Could he protect Lily from a family that was also hers?
Footsteps approached.
Closer.
Daniel picked up the old photograph of Emily.
He looked at her eyes.
The woman who trusted him.
The woman who gave him a daughter.
Then he looked at Lily.
“I spent twenty years running from who I was.”
He folded the photograph carefully.
“Now I’m going to find out who I choose to be.”
Marcus smiled slightly.
“Welcome back, Daniel.”
Daniel looked toward the entrance.
The enemy was coming.
But for the first time…
he wasn’t standing there as a stranger.
He wasn’t fighting someone else’s war.
He was fighting his own.
And the Vale family was about to discover something they had forgotten.
May you like
The most dangerous person in their empire…
was the son they thought they erased.
