Chapter 10: The War Inside the Vale Family

The footsteps above became louder.

Closer.

The sound traveled through the old walls of the underground room like a countdown.

Daniel Cross stood silently.

But something inside him had changed.

Minutes earlier, he had discovered that the man who destroyed countless lives was his father.

Victor Vale.

The man whose name represented fear, corruption, and power.

For most of his life, Daniel had believed he was nothing like him.

Now he knew they shared the same blood.

But standing there with Lily beside him, he finally understood something.

Blood created a connection.

It did not create a destiny.

A person was not a reflection of where they came from.

A person was a reflection of what they chose to do.

And Daniel had already chosen.

He chose Lily.

He chose Emily’s memory.

He chose the truth.

Marcus quietly moved toward the equipment table.

“We don’t have much time.”

Thomas looked toward the tunnel entrance.

“They’ll reach us soon.”

Daniel looked at him.

“How many?”

Thomas hesitated.

“Enough.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“That’s not a number.”

“No.”

Thomas looked serious.

“But it’s the only answer you need.”

Lily looked nervous.

“Are we going to run again?”

Daniel looked down at her.

For a moment, he remembered the little girl hiding beneath the diner table.

Terrified.

Alone.

Waiting for someone to decide her fate.

He hated that memory.

Because she had spent her whole life running.

Not anymore.

“No.”

Lily looked surprised.

“No?”

Daniel shook his head.

“We’re done running.”

Marcus glanced at him.

“You’re sure?”

Daniel nodded.

“Twenty years ago, I ran.”

His eyes moved toward the tunnel.

“I lost everything.”

He looked at Lily.

“I’m not making that mistake twice.”

Thomas watched him carefully.

Then he said quietly:

“You sound like Emily.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Thomas gave a small, sad smile.

“She said the same thing.”

Daniel looked at him.

“When?”

“The last night I saw her.”

The room became quiet.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You saw Emily?”

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before she disappeared.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Thomas looked away.

“Because I was a coward.”

The honesty surprised Daniel.

Thomas continued.

“I had already betrayed you.”

“You gave information to Victor.”

“Yes.”

“You helped him find her.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The words were painful.

But Daniel didn’t interrupt.

Because for the first time, Thomas wasn’t hiding.

“I thought Victor would help me.”

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“I was dying. I was scared. I wanted to live.”

Daniel remained silent.

“But after I realized what he was really doing…”

Thomas swallowed.

“It was too late.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What happened to Emily?”

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“She knew she was being followed.”

Daniel’s breathing slowed.

“She knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t she leave?”

Thomas looked toward Lily.

“Because she had nowhere safe to go.”

The words hit Daniel.

Nowhere safe.

Emily had spent years protecting everyone else.

And when she needed protection...

he wasn’t there.

Thomas continued.

“She told me something that night.”

Daniel waited.

“She said, ‘If Daniel ever finds out about Lily, he’ll blame himself.’”

Daniel looked down.

Because Emily knew him too well.

Thomas looked at him.

“She was right.”

A loud crash echoed above.

Everyone turned.

The enemy had reached the building.

Marcus grabbed an old radio.

“We need to move.”

Daniel looked at the files.

“What about the evidence?”

Marcus looked at the shelves.

“We can’t carry everything.”

Daniel thought for a second.

Then he walked toward the computer.

“Then we don’t.”

Marcus frowned.

“What are you doing?”

Daniel removed the main storage drive.

“We take the truth.”

Thomas looked at him.

“And leave the rest?”

Daniel nodded.

“Because documents can disappear.”

He looked at Lily.

“But people remember.”

The hidden door suddenly shook.

Someone was trying to open it.

Lily grabbed Daniel’s hand.

He squeezed hers.

“I’m here.”

The door shook again.

Then a voice came from the other side.

“Daniel.”

Everyone froze.

Ethan Vale.

Daniel slowly looked toward the door.

His brother.

The man who chased Lily.

The man who hated him.

“Open the door.”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Ethan continued.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“I understand more than I ever have.”

A pause.

Then Ethan laughed.

“You found out.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me.”

“Why would I?”

The coldness in Ethan’s voice was worse than anger.

“You were the favorite.”

Daniel frowned.

“I was abandoned.”

Ethan’s voice changed.

“You were protected.”

Silence.

Daniel stared at the door.

Ethan continued.

“Do you know what it was like growing up with Victor?”

No answer.

“He didn’t see me as a son.”

His voice became bitter.

“He saw me as a replacement.”

Daniel listened.

“He wanted me to become him.”

A pause.

“But then you appeared.”

Daniel felt the weight of his words.

Ethan continued.

“The son who disappeared.”

“The son who had no idea he was a Vale.”

“The son who still had a conscience.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because beneath all the hatred...

there was pain.

Ethan wasn’t just angry.

He was broken.

“You hated me because I was free.”

Daniel said quietly.

The silence behind the door confirmed it.

Ethan finally spoke.

“Yes.”

The answer was unexpected.

“Yes, I hated you.”

“But not because you were stronger.”

His voice lowered.

“Because you had what I never had.”

Daniel looked at Lily.

“A choice.”

The door suddenly opened.

Not forced.

Opened.

Ethan stood there.

Alone.

No guards.

No weapons.

Everyone was surprised.

Daniel stared.

“Why are you here?”

Ethan looked at Lily.

Then away.

“Because Victor is going to kill her.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?”

Ethan walked inside.

“He doesn’t care about evidence anymore.”

Marcus raised a weapon.

Ethan ignored him.

“He knows Lily is the last thing Emily left behind.”

Daniel watched him carefully.

“Why should I believe you?”

Ethan looked at him.

“Because I know my father.”

A pause.

“And because I’m tired of being him.”

The room became silent.

Nobody expected those words.

Especially not from Ethan.

Then the lights above flickered.

A sound came through the tunnel.

More footsteps.

Ethan looked toward the entrance.

“He’s here.”

Daniel understood immediately.

Victor.

The man behind everything.

The father who destroyed his own family.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“For the first time in my life…”

He took a breath.

“I’m choosing my brother.”

Daniel stared.

Brother.

A word he never expected to hear from Ethan.

Then the tunnel lights went out.

Darkness swallowed them.

A voice echoed.

Calm.

Powerful.

Familiar.

“Daniel.”

Victor Vale.

“I wondered how long it would take before you discovered the truth.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I was your son.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Victor’s answer came instantly.

“Because I needed to know whether my greatest mistake would become my greatest weakness…”

A pause.

“Or my greatest weapon.”

Daniel felt Lily’s hand in his.

Victor continued.

“And now I see.”

The darkness shifted.

“I was wrong about you.”

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

“What does that mean?”

Victor stepped into the light.

The man who controlled the town.

The man who destroyed lives.

The man whose blood ran through Daniel’s veins.

He looked at his son.

And for the first time...

he looked uncertain.

“It means, Daniel…”

Victor smiled faintly.

“You became something I never could.”

A pause.

“Someone worth saving.”

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

The war inside the Vale family had finally begun.

And this time...

May you like

Victor Vale was not fighting strangers.

He was fighting his own children.
