Chapter 8: The Secret Daniel Buried

The hidden passage beneath Reed Auto Repair had not been opened in twenty years.
Dust covered the walls.
Old pipes ran across the ceiling.
The air smelled like rust, forgotten memories, and time itself.
Daniel Cross walked ahead with a flashlight in one hand and Lily’s small hand in the other.
Every step deeper into the tunnel felt like walking backward through his own life.
A life he had spent two decades trying to bury.
Behind them, Marcus locked the entrance.
For a moment, the only sound was their footsteps.
Lily looked around nervously.
“Where are we going?”
Daniel glanced back.
“To the beginning.”
She frowned.
“The beginning of what?”
Daniel looked forward.
“The reason everything happened.”
Marcus followed behind them carrying an old metal case.
“You should know something, Daniel.”
Daniel stopped.
“What?”
Marcus looked serious.
“Whatever you find down there…”
He paused.
“Don’t assume you know who the good people are.”
Daniel stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus looked away.
“It means the truth rarely arrives wearing a clean shirt.”
Daniel understood.
People like Victor Vale always looked powerful because they controlled the story.
They decided who was the hero.
Who was the villain.
Who was forgotten.
But hidden beneath every story was something people didn’t want discovered.
The truth.
After twenty minutes of walking, they reached a large underground room.
Daniel stopped.
His flashlight moved across the walls.
And his heart froze.
Photographs.
Hundreds of them.
Documents.
Maps.
Recordings.
Everything connected to the Vale family.
But also...
him.
Lily noticed his reaction.
“What is this place?”
Marcus opened the metal case.
“The original investigation room.”
Daniel turned.
“You kept it?”
Marcus nodded.
“Emily asked me to.”
Daniel walked toward the nearest table.
There were files with dates.
Names.
Locations.
One file caught his attention.
DANIEL CROSS.
He slowly picked it up.
His hands felt heavier.
“What is this?”
Marcus didn’t answer.
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a report.
A report from twenty years ago.
The first sentence made him stop breathing.
SUBJECT: DANIEL CROSS.
STATUS: POSSIBLE INSIDER THREAT.
Daniel stared.
“No.”
Lily looked at him.
“What does it say?”
Daniel couldn’t answer.
Because he remembered.
Not everything.
Just fragments.
A conversation.
A missing file.
People accusing him.
But he had always believed Victor framed him.
Now he wasn’t sure.
He continued reading.
The report claimed that Daniel had access to confidential information.
That he had contact with members of the Vale organization.
That evidence had disappeared while under his protection.
Marcus watched him carefully.
“You never read the full report.”
Daniel looked up.
“Because it was fake.”
Marcus shook his head.
“Some of it was.”
Daniel froze.
“Some?”
Marcus sighed.
“That’s why Emily never gave up.”
Daniel looked confused.
“She knew?”
“Yes.”
“She knew I was accused?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t she tell me?”
Marcus looked at him.
“Because she found something else.”
Daniel turned the pages.
Near the bottom was a handwritten note.
Emily’s handwriting.
Daniel recognized it instantly.
He read it silently.
Daniel is not the enemy.
He is the missing piece.
His eyes narrowed.
“The missing piece?”
Marcus nodded.
“Emily discovered that someone inside the investigation team was working with Victor.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Who?”
Marcus remained silent.
“Marcus.”
The older man looked uncomfortable.
“Someone you trusted.”
Daniel felt a cold sensation.
“Who?”
Marcus reached into another file.
He pulled out a photograph.
A group photo.
Daniel stared.
There he was.
Emily.
Marcus.
And another man.
A man Daniel knew.
A man he had considered a brother.
Daniel’s face changed.
“No…”
Lily looked at the photo.
“Who is he?”
Daniel whispered:
“Thomas.”
Thomas Blake.
His closest friend.
His partner.
The man who had stood beside him through everything.
The man who helped investigate the Vale family.
The man who convinced Daniel to walk away after Emily disappeared.
Daniel stepped backward.
“That’s impossible.”
Marcus shook his head.
“I wish it was.”
“What happened to him?”
Marcus looked down.
“He joined the Vale organization.”
Silence.
The kind of silence that hurt.
Because betrayal from an enemy was expected.
Betrayal from someone you loved was different.
It changed how you saw your entire past.
Daniel remembered Thomas.
The jokes.
The late nights.
The promises.
“I thought he was my friend.”
Marcus looked at him.
“He was.”
Daniel looked confused.
“What?”
Marcus sighed.
“That’s the part you need to understand.”
He pointed to the files.
“Thomas didn’t start as a traitor.”
Daniel stared.
“Then what happened?”
Marcus walked to another table.
He opened a folder.
Inside was a medical report.
Daniel read the name.
THOMAS BLAKE.
Diagnosis.
Cancer.
Daniel looked up.
“He was sick?”
Marcus nodded.
“Victor offered him treatment.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“And Thomas gave him information.”
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The world had become more complicated.
Thomas wasn’t innocent.
But he wasn’t simply a monster either.
He was a desperate man who made a terrible choice.
Lily watched Daniel carefully.
“Does that mean people can do bad things because they’re scared?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Does that make them bad?”
Daniel thought.
“No.”
He looked at the files.
“But it means they have to face what they did.”
A sudden sound echoed through the tunnel.
Footsteps.
Everyone froze.
Marcus turned off the flashlight.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Daniel moved in front of Lily.
The footsteps came closer.
Slow.
Confident.
Not someone searching.
Someone who knew exactly where they were going.
Then a voice echoed.
“Daniel.”
Daniel’s entire body became tense.
He knew that voice.
He had not heard it in twenty years.
But he would recognize it anywhere.
Thomas Blake.
Alive.
Standing somewhere in the darkness.
Lily whispered:
“Is that him?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because the man who had once been his best friend had returned.
And he was holding a gun.
The flashlight suddenly turned on.
Thomas stood at the entrance.
Older.
Tired.
Broken.
But alive.
Daniel stared at him.
“Why?”
Thomas looked at Lily.
Then back at Daniel.
“I tried to stop this.”
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“You helped start it.”
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
“Emily trusted you.”
“I know.”
“You destroyed everything.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The honesty surprised Daniel.
No excuses.
No lies.
Just regret.
Then Thomas looked at Lily.
“She doesn’t know the truth.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Then tell us.”
Thomas looked toward the files.
“The truth is…”
He took a breath.
“Lily was never the target.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
Thomas looked directly at him.
“Victor never wanted the evidence.”
A pause.
“He wanted you.”
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“Why?”
Thomas answered quietly:
“Because twenty years ago, before Emily disappeared…”
He looked at Daniel.
“You discovered something about yourself.”
The room became silent.
Something about himself?
Daniel stared.
“What are you talking about?”
Thomas swallowed.
“The reason Victor Vale feared you.”
He stepped closer.
“Daniel…”
A painful expression crossed his face.
“You were the one person who could destroy him.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t understand.”
Thomas looked at Lily.
“Because you weren’t just investigating the Vale family.”
He paused.
“You were part of it.”
Daniel froze.
The words echoed through the underground room.
Part of it.
Impossible.
Lily looked terrified.
Marcus said nothing.
Because he knew.
Daniel stared at Thomas.
“No.”
Thomas looked away.
“You were born a Vale.”
The world stopped.
For twenty years, Daniel believed he was a stranger fighting a powerful family.
But now…
he learned he was connected to them.
Not by enemies.
Not by investigation.
By blood.
Thomas whispered:
“You’re Victor Vale’s son.”
The flashlight slipped from Daniel’s hand.
Darkness surrounded them again.

And for the first time in his life…
Daniel Cross questioned everything he knew about himself.
