Chapter 7 - The old Whitmore bank had been abandoned for nine years. Its marble facade was blackened by pollution.

The brass doors were locked.
Daniel still had an old key.
He opened them at 2:17 a.m.
Claire stayed beside Emily.
Dr. Shaw followed several steps behind.
Detective Harris remained in the hospital.
Nobody knew whether he would survive the night.
The bank smelled of dust and rust.
Daniel walked toward the old vault.
A massive steel door stood at the end of the corridor.
“This wasn't here when I was a child.”
Dr. Shaw shook his head.
“It was.”
Daniel inserted the brass key.
Nothing happened.
Claire frowned.
Emily looked at the lock.
“Turn it twice.”
Daniel did.
Click.
The vault door opened.
Inside stood rows of metal shelves.
Boxes.
Documents.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Claire picked up the nearest file.
Seventeen names.
But three had been crossed out.
She looked at Emily.
“These are the survivors.”
Emily nodded.
Claire read the first.
Emily Whitmore.
Second.
Adrian Shaw.
Third.
She stopped.
Lena Shaw.
Claire looked up.
“Lena survived.”
Dr. Shaw went completely still.
“No.”
Emily stared at him.
“Yes.”
The doctor stumbled backward.
“My daughter…”
“She wasn't your daughter,” Emily said.
“She was my daughter.”
“Not by blood.”
Dr. Shaw covered his face.
“What did they do to her?”
Emily didn't answer.
Claire opened another file.
Inside was a series of photographs.
Children in hospital beds.
A laboratory.
A masked medical team.
Then a photograph that made Daniel stop breathing.
It showed Martin Whitmore.
His father.
Standing beside Dr. Adrian Shaw.
And beside them was Thomas Bell.
The funeral director.
All three men were smiling.
Daniel dropped the photograph.
“Thomas was part of this?”
Emily nodded.
“Everyone who helped disappear the children received money.”
Daniel looked at Dr. Shaw.
“Why are you still alive?”
The doctor said nothing.
Emily answered for him.
“Because he betrayed them.”
Claire turned.
“Then why are you working with him?”
Dr. Shaw whispered:
“I've spent twelve years trying to undo what I helped create.”
Daniel stepped toward him.
“You watched children die.”
“Yes.”
“And did nothing.”
“I tried.”
“Not enough.”
Dr. Shaw lowered his head.
“I know.”
A metallic sound echoed through the vault.
Everyone froze.
The vault door was closing.
Daniel ran.
Too late.
The heavy steel door slammed shut.
Lights flickered.
Then a voice came through the intercom.
“Daniel.”
Daniel stared upward.
His father's voice.
Martin Whitmore.
“You always were slow.”
Claire looked at Emily.
Emily was trembling.
Martin continued.
“You found the vault.”
Daniel slammed his fist against the door.
“Come out!”
A low laugh echoed.
“I've been waiting for you.”
“Why did you kill Emily?”
“She was never meant to die.”
Emily stepped toward the intercom.
“Then why bury me?”
Silence.
Then Martin spoke.
“Because some lessons require darkness.”
Emily's face hardened.
“You remember me.”
“I remember everything.”
Claire looked around.
The air was becoming colder.
Then a hissing sound started.
Emily looked up.
“Gas.”
Daniel covered his mouth.
Dr. Shaw ran toward a vent.
“They're pumping something in.”
Claire searched frantically.
“There's no way out.”
Daniel looked at the shelves.
Then at the floor.
A narrow seam ran beneath one cabinet.
He pushed it.
Nothing.
Claire noticed a lever behind a shelf.
She pulled.
A hidden panel opened.
A tunnel appeared.
“Move!”
They crawled inside seconds before the gas filled the vault.
Daniel went first.
Claire helped Emily.
Dr. Shaw came last.
Behind them, the vault door remained sealed.
At the end of the tunnel was a small room.
A single chair.
A camera.
And a television.
The screen flickered on.
Martin Whitmore appeared.
Older.
Calmer.
Smiling.
“I knew Emily would find someone brave enough to open the coffin.”
He looked directly at Claire.
“You.”
Claire felt a chill.
Martin smiled.
“Unfortunately, you opened the wrong coffin.”
The screen changed.
A second camera feed appeared.
It showed the hospital room where Emily had been treated.
And beside Emily's empty bed stood a figure.
A little girl.
Lena.
Alive.
Claire whispered:
“Oh, my God.”
May you like
Then Lena turned toward the camera.
And behind her stood Detective Harris.
