Chapter 13 - Harris stepped into the candlelight. The gun remained steady.

Daniel stared.

“You're working for Martin.”

Harris shook his head.

“No.”

“Then put the gun down.”

“I can't.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Why?”

Harris looked at the ledger.

“Because this isn't the original.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

Harris opened the book.

The pages were thin.

Too clean.

Too new.

“This was planted.”

Daniel stared.

“Then where is the real ledger?”

Harris looked toward Elise.

She lowered her eyes.

“You took it.”

Elise nodded.

“I gave it to someone.”

“Who?”

She looked at Claire.

Claire frowned.

“Me?”

Elise nodded.

“You were the only one Martin never fully investigated.”

Claire's hand moved to her pocket.

The brass key.

“What did you give me?”

“A memory card.”

Claire pulled it out.

A tiny black card.

Daniel stared.

“You had it the whole time?”

“I didn't know what it was.”

Harris took it.

“Let's find out.”

They inserted it into a laptop.

A video appeared.

Martin sat at a desk.

Younger.

Beside him was Dr. Shaw.

And Thomas Bell.

Martin spoke directly into the camera.

“This is the full record of the Whitmore program.”

The video continued.

He explained the experiments.

The fabricated deaths.

The forged identities.

The hidden accounts.

Then he said:

“Patient seventeen survived.”

A photograph appeared.

Lena.

Martin continued:

“She carries genetic markers linked to the original research.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why does that matter?”

Elise answered.

“Because the trust has a genetic clause.”

Claire looked confused.

“What kind?”

“Only a direct blood descendant of Martin can activate the final inheritance.”

Daniel stared.

“Lena.”

Elise nodded.

“The experiments created a biological record Martin needed.”

Daniel understood.

“He needs her DNA.”

“Yes.”

The video continued.

Martin's voice became colder.

“If patient seventeen survives to adulthood, the trust transfers.”

Daniel whispered:

“So he wants to eliminate everyone else and use Lena.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed at the screen.

“Look.”

A line of text appeared.

SUBJECT 17 IS NOT LENA SHAW.

Everyone froze.

Harris leaned forward.

“What?”

The video revealed another photograph.

A baby.

Then a second photograph.

Emily as a baby.

Daniel looked at Emily.

“No.”

Elise covered her mouth.

“Martin lied.”

Emily stepped closer.

“What am I?”

The video answered.

SUBJECT 17: EMILY HART.

Claire's eyes widened.

“Then Lena isn't the final patient.”

“No.”

Elise shook her head.

“Lena is a decoy.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

“Then why does Martin need her?”

“Because he wants us to think she matters.”

Claire suddenly understood.

“He is buying time.”

Harris looked at her.

“For what?”

“Moving the real evidence.”

A phone rang.

Daniel answered.

Martin's voice came through.

“You have ten minutes.”

“What do you want?”

“You.”

Daniel froze.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“The Whitmore cemetery.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Why?”

“Because you were the only one who was never supposed to wake up.”

The call ended.

Emily looked at Daniel.

“You can't go.”

“I have to.”

“No.”

“He'll kill Lena.”

Claire stepped between them.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

“You've spent the entire night reacting to him.”

She held up the memory card.

“Let's stop reacting.”

Harris nodded.

“We use the cemetery.”

Elise frowned.

“For what?”

“To trap him.”

The cemetery was abandoned by dawn.

Fog covered the graves.

Daniel stood beside his father's monument.

Emily and Claire hid behind the mausoleum.

Harris positioned himself near the gate.

A black SUV entered.

Martin stepped out.

No guards.

No weapons.

Just an umbrella.

Daniel stared.

“You look exactly like him.”

Martin smiled.

“Because I am him.”

Daniel said:

“You're not my father.”

Martin's smile disappeared.

“What?”

“You're the man who replaced him.”

Silence.

Martin's expression hardened.

“You've been listening to lies.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Then tell me your real name.”

Martin's eyes changed.

For the first time, genuine fear flashed across his face.

Because someone else stepped from behind the graves.

An elderly man.

A cane.

A scar across his jaw.

Daniel stared.

This man looked older than Martin.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

Daniel's father.

The real Martin Whitmore.

He looked at the other man.

“You stole my life.”

The impostor stepped backward.

The real Martin raised a gun.

May you like

And whispered:

“Now give me my family back.”
