Chapter 1 - The maid smashed the coffin open in the middle of the funeral.Crack.

The sound tore through the chapel.
Everyone screamed.
A woman in the front pew dropped her prayer book. Someone knocked over a candle. The priest stumbled backward, staring at the white coffin as a jagged split appeared across its polished lid.
Claire Bennett raised the crowbar again.
The grieving husband lunged toward her.
“What are you doing?”
His voice broke across the chapel.
Claire swung the crowbar a second time.
CRACK.
Wood splintered.
“Stop her!” someone shouted.
Daniel Whitmore grabbed Claire by the wrist.
“My wife is dead!”
Claire twisted free.
“She’s not dead.”
Daniel froze.
For a second, neither of them moved.
The entire chapel seemed to hold its breath.
Then Claire pointed toward the broken coffin.
“Then listen.”
Daniel stared at her.
“What?”
“Listen.”
Nobody spoke.
There was only the faint hiss of the heating system.
The whisper of rain against stained glass.
Daniel stepped closer.
His face had gone pale.
“Emily?”
Claire pressed one trembling hand against the broken lid.
“Please.”
Daniel leaned forward.
And then he heard it.
Tap.
A pause.
Tap.
Something moved beneath the lid.
A woman screamed.
Daniel staggered backward.
“No…”
The coffin shook.
Once.
Twice.
Then a pale hand pushed through the fractured wood.
Several mourners ran for the doors.
Daniel stood completely still.
“Emily?”
The fingers twitched.
Claire seized the edge of the lid and pulled.
“Help me!”
Daniel snapped out of his shock.
Together they tore away the broken wood.
Emily Whitmore lay beneath the white satin lining.
Her face was almost gray.
Her lips were blue.
Her eyes were closed.
But her chest moved.
Barely.
Daniel dropped beside her.
“Emily!”
Her eyelids fluttered.
The priest shouted for an ambulance.
Claire pressed two fingers against Emily’s neck.
A pulse.
Weak.
Slow.
But unmistakable.
“She’s alive,” Claire said.
The chapel erupted.
Daniel's hands shook as he reached for his wife.
“Emily, stay with me.”
Her eyes opened for a fraction of a second.
She looked directly at him.
Fear flooded her face.
Then her lips moved.
Daniel leaned closer.
“What?”
Emily tried again.
Her voice was almost too weak to hear.
“Not…”
Her fingers closed around Daniel’s sleeve.
“Not him.”
Daniel looked up.
“What did she say?”
But before Claire could answer, she noticed someone moving at the back of the chapel.
The funeral director.
Thomas Bell.
He was walking toward the side exit.
Not running.
Not panicking.
Leaving.
Claire stared at him.
“Mr. Bell?”
He stopped.
For the first time, his composure cracked.
Daniel looked over.
“Why are you leaving?”
Thomas said nothing.
Claire took one step toward him.
“You knew.”
Thomas's eyes darted toward Emily.
Then toward the door.
“I don't know what you're talking about.”
Claire pointed at the coffin.
“You weren't surprised when she moved.”
His expression changed.
Just slightly.
But it was enough.
Daniel saw it too.
“You knew my wife was alive.”
Thomas backed away.
“Stay where you are,” Daniel said.
Thomas turned.
He ran.
Daniel chased him.
The chapel doors slammed open.
Rain exploded across the stone steps.
Thomas disappeared into the darkness.
Daniel stopped at the entrance, breathing hard.
Behind him, sirens approached.
Claire remained beside Emily.
She looked down at the woman she had served for four years.
Then something caught her eye.
A small mark on Emily’s wrist.
Two tiny puncture wounds.
Claire's stomach tightened.
She had seen that before.
At the hospital.
Years ago.
On patients who had been heavily sedated.
She looked toward the empty doorway.
Then toward the coffin.
And suddenly the question was no longer how Emily had survived.
It was who had wanted her unconscious long enough to make everyone believe she was dead.
The ambulance arrived.
Paramedics rushed inside.
As they lifted Emily onto the stretcher, her eyes opened again.
This time she whispered one sentence.
“Claire knows where they hid it.”
Claire went cold.
“What?”
Emily's eyes closed.
The paramedics carried her away.
Daniel turned toward Claire.
“What did she mean?”
Claire stared at the coffin.
“I don't know.”
But that was a lie.
Because three nights earlier, Emily had secretly given Claire a brass key.

And Claire had hidden it in the one place nobody would think to look.
Inside the dead woman's coffin.
