Chapter 3: The Birthmark That Changed Everything

Arthur Mercer's whispered words never rose above the hush of the ballroom.

"...That birthmark belongs to our family."

But Julian heard every syllable.

His eyes narrowed.

For the first time in years, uncertainty crossed his face.

He looked from his grandfather to Emma, who blinked innocently, still hugging her faded gray elephant.

"What birthmark?" Julian asked quietly.

Arthur did not answer immediately.

Instead, he carefully brushed a loose curl away from Emma's right ear.

There it was.

A tiny crescent moon.

Barely the size of a fingernail.

Almost invisible unless someone knew exactly where to look.

Arthur inhaled sharply.

His fingers trembled.

"It can't be..."

Emma tilted her head.

"Did I do something wrong, Grandpa?"

The innocent title escaped before anyone could react.

Several guests gasped.

Claire immediately knelt beside her daughter.

"No, sweetheart."

"He's not your grandpa."

Emma frowned.

"But he looks lonely."

Arthur froze.

Lonely.

Of all the words a child could have chosen...

That one struck deepest.

No one in the room knew that Arthur Mercer had buried his wife fifteen years earlier.

His only son had died in a suspicious plane crash.

His daughter-in-law had disappeared without a trace.

And for three long years, he had secretly searched for a missing child whose existence almost no one even knew.

Lonely.

The little girl had unknowingly described the emptiest part of his life.

Julian stepped closer.

"Grandfather."

Arthur slowly stood.

His voice regained its usual calm.

"Take the child somewhere comfortable."

Julian frowned.

"Why?"

"I need to ask Claire Dawson some questions."

Claire stiffened.

"Questions... about what?"

Arthur looked directly into her eyes.

"About three years ago."

Every muscle in Claire's body tightened.

For the briefest moment...

Fear flashed across her face.

It lasted less than a second.

But Julian noticed.

So did Arthur.

Neither man said anything.

Vanessa, who had remained near the entrance despite being ordered to leave, suddenly laughed.

"This is ridiculous."

She folded her arms.

"So now we're pretending some servant's child belongs to the Mercer family?"

No one answered.

Vanessa's laughter became sharper.

"Have you all lost your minds?"

Arthur finally turned toward her.

His gaze was colder than winter.

"You are still here."

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"I deserve an explanation."

Arthur nodded once.

"No."

He looked toward Mr. Hayes.

"I believed my grandson's order was clear."

The security chief bowed.

"It was, Chairman."

Arthur's next sentence carried quiet authority.

"Then carry it out."

Within seconds, four security officers surrounded Vanessa.

She struggled.

"Don't touch me!"

"My father invested millions in this engagement!"

Richard Whitmore hurried forward.

"Chairman Mercer, surely we can discuss this rationally."

Arthur looked at him without emotion.

"My grandson ended the engagement."

"I have no reason to overrule him."

Richard swallowed.

"You'll regret this."

Arthur's eyes hardened.

"No."

"You will."

As the Whitmore family was escorted toward the entrance, Vanessa twisted around one final time.

She pointed directly at Emma.

"This isn't over!"

"Whatever game you're playing..."

"I'll expose it!"

Emma hid behind Claire.

Julian stepped between them.

His voice remained calm.

"If you threaten a child again..."

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

Vanessa understood.

For the first time that night...

She looked genuinely afraid.

The mansion doors closed behind her.

The echo lingered for several long seconds.

The guests remained awkwardly silent.

Arthur glanced across the ballroom.

"Ladies and gentlemen."

"I apologize."

"The evening has ended."

There was no further explanation.

None was necessary.

Within minutes, ministers, judges, and businessmen quietly began leaving.

No one complained.

Everyone understood.

Something far more important than an engagement had just happened.

And whatever it was...

It involved the Mercer family.

Half an hour later...

The mansion was almost empty.

Rain continued falling outside.

Emma sat in the library beside the fireplace, happily coloring in an old sketchbook Samuel had found for her.

She occasionally made soft trumpet noises while pretending her stuffed elephant could fly.

Julian watched her from across the room.

Children usually became frightened around him.

Emma seemed completely unaffected.

She looked up.

"Mister?"

"Yes?"

"Are you angry?"

"No."

"You looked angry before."

"I was."

"But not now."

She smiled.

"Good."

"I don't like angry faces."

Julian found himself asking a question he hadn't expected.

"Why weren't you afraid of Vanessa?"

Emma shrugged.

"Mommy says bullies get bigger if everyone is scared."

"So I wasn't scared."

"And did that work?"

Emma nodded proudly.

"She got smaller."

Julian actually smiled.

A real smile.

It lasted only a second.

Samuel nearly dropped the tea tray.

He had worked for the Mercer family for forty years.

He could count on one hand the number of genuine smiles he had seen from Julian.

Meanwhile...

In Arthur's private study.

Claire sat stiffly in an antique leather chair.

Her hands rested tightly together in her lap.

Arthur stood beside the window.

Neither spoke for almost a minute.

Finally...

Arthur broke the silence.

"How old is Emma?"

Claire answered immediately.

"Three."

"When exactly did she turn three?"

Claire hesitated.

"Last month."

Arthur slowly nodded.

The timeline matched.

Exactly.

He walked to an old mahogany cabinet.

Unlocked it.

Removed a small velvet box.

Inside lay a faded baby bracelet.

Tiny.

Made of silver.

Engraved with one word.

Aurora.

Arthur carefully placed it on the desk.

Claire stared at it.

Her face instantly lost all color.

Arthur noticed.

"You recognize it."

Claire's breathing became uneven.

"I..."

"No."

Arthur interrupted gently.

"Please don't lie."

"Not tonight."

Claire lowered her head.

Tears rolled silently onto her hands.

Arthur's voice softened.

"Three years ago..."

"A baby disappeared."

"Only five people knew she existed."

"Myself."

"My grandson."

"Her parents."

"And the woman hired as her temporary nanny."

Claire closed her eyes.

Arthur continued.

"The nanny vanished the same night."

"So did the child."

He leaned forward slightly.

"When I saw Emma's birthmark..."

"I remembered something."

Claire whispered,

"...Please."

Arthur stopped.

"I promised."

Arthur frowned.

"Promised whom?"

Claire remained silent.

Then...

Very quietly...

She reached inside the pocket of her old gray uniform.

She removed a tiny gold key.

It was worn smooth with age.

Arthur stared at it.

His heartbeat quickened.

He knew that key.

There had only ever been two like it.

One remained locked inside the Mercer family vault.

The second...

Had disappeared together with the missing baby.

Arthur looked at Claire.

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"Where..."

"...did you get that?"

Claire's tears finally spilled freely.

"I've been waiting three years..."

May you like

"...for someone to ask me that question."
