Chapter 11: The Lullaby Only One Child Knew

The surveillance video ended.

The room remained utterly silent.

No one moved toward the tablet.

No one spoke.

The final words echoed in every mind.

"You should never have trusted me."

Julian replayed the clip.

Again.

And again.

Each time, he hoped the blurred silhouette would become clearer.

It never did.

The figure's face remained hidden by the camera angle.

Only the voice lingered.

Distorted.

Deliberately damaged.

Hayes broke the silence.

"I'll send this to the forensic audio lab."

Arthur nodded.

"Use every resource we have."

Julian stopped the video.

"Not just ours."

Hayes looked up.

"You mean...?"

Julian answered without hesitation.

"Interpol."

"The FBI."

"MI5."

"If someone can recover that voice, I want them working on it."

Hayes gave a short nod.

"I'll make the calls."

Claire sat beside Emma in the drawing room.

Emma was happily coloring another picture.

This time, she drew four people holding hands.

Claire smiled gently.

"Who's everyone?"

Emma pointed one by one.

"Mommy."

"Me."

"The serious man."

"And the grandpa."

Claire's smile faded.

"You already think they're family?"

Emma shrugged.

"It feels warm here."

Claire looked toward the window.

For three years...

She had lived with one suitcase packed at all times.

Ready to run.

Ready to disappear.

For the first time...

Emma felt safe.

Claire prayed that feeling would last.

Arthur gathered Julian and Hayes in his private office.

"There is something I never told either of you."

Julian looked at him.

"What?"

Arthur unlocked a small cabinet behind his desk.

Inside rested an old wooden music box.

Its paint had faded with age.

A tiny silver moon decorated the lid.

Arthur placed it carefully on the desk.

"When Aurora was born..."

"Isabella asked me to build something only family would recognize."

He wound the key.

The music box began to play.

A familiar melody filled the room.

The exact lullaby Emma had hummed.

Julian closed his eyes.

There was no doubt now.

Every note matched perfectly.

Arthur whispered,

"Only three copies existed."

"One stayed with Isabella."

"One remained here."

"The third..."

"...disappeared with Aurora."

Hayes frowned.

"If Emma knows the song..."

Arthur nodded slowly.

"Then someone sang it to her."

Julian finished the thought.

"And that someone..."

"...was Isabella."

Just then, Samuel knocked gently.

"Sir."

Arthur looked up.

"What is it?"

"A visitor has arrived."

Hayes immediately tensed.

"We aren't expecting anyone."

Samuel nodded.

"I know."

"He refused to leave."

Julian stood.

"Who?"

Samuel hesitated.

"He says..."

"...his name is Father Michael."

Minutes later...

An elderly priest stood quietly in the mansion's entrance hall.

His black coat was soaked from the rain.

His white hair clung to his forehead.

Yet his blue eyes remained calm.

Arthur stopped walking the instant he saw him.

"...Michael."

The priest smiled sadly.

"It's been a long time, Arthur."

Julian looked between them.

"You know each other?"

Arthur answered,

"For more than forty years."

Father Michael removed a worn leather satchel from his shoulder.

"I heard rumors."

Arthur's expression hardened.

"Rumors about what?"

"The child."

Silence.

The priest looked toward Emma, who peeked curiously from behind Claire.

His eyes filled with tears.

"My God..."

"She has Isabella's smile."

Julian took one protective step forward.

"What do you know?"

Father Michael looked at him.

"I baptized Aurora."

The room froze.

Claire's grip tightened on Emma's shoulder.

Arthur spoke quietly.

"Come inside."

The priest nodded.

"I should have come years ago."

In Arthur's study...

Father Michael accepted a cup of tea but never touched it.

Instead, he opened his satchel.

Inside lay an old church registry.

Its pages had yellowed with time.

He carefully turned to a bookmarked page.

"There."

Julian leaned closer.

One handwritten entry.

Aurora Isabella Mercer

Date of baptism.

Names of the parents.

Witnesses.

Everything appeared ordinary.

Except for one final signature.

Julian frowned.

"Who is this?"

The priest answered softly.

"The godfather."

Arthur's face changed instantly.

"No..."

Father Michael nodded.

"I'm afraid so."

Julian read the name aloud.

Victor Mercer.

Silence consumed the room.

Arthur slowly sat down.

He looked exhausted.

"I never imagined..."

Father Michael interrupted gently.

"You believed blood would change him."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"I was wrong."

Julian looked at the registry again.

"So Victor knew Aurora from birth."

"Yes."

"He held her during the baptism."

Claire whispered,

"Then he would've recognized her..."

"...if she survived."

Father Michael nodded.

"Immediately."

Hayes suddenly entered with visible urgency.

"Sir."

Julian turned.

"What happened?"

"We recovered another part of the surveillance archive."

He connected his tablet to the large screen.

"This footage begins three minutes before the previous clip."

The recording played.

Isabella stood in the nursery.

She gently rocked baby Aurora while singing the lullaby.

Someone knocked.

She smiled.

Without hesitation...

She opened the door.

Victor Mercer entered.

He wasn't threatening.

He wasn't angry.

He carried a wrapped birthday gift.

Isabella hugged him.

Like family.

Like someone she trusted completely.

Emma watched the screen curiously.

Then pointed at Victor.

"I know him."

Every adult in the room froze.

Julian slowly knelt beside her.

"You've seen this man before?"

Emma nodded.

Claire stared in disbelief.

"When?"

Emma frowned, trying to remember.

"He gave me..."

She stopped.

"What did he give you?" Julian asked gently.

Emma looked down at her stuffed elephant.

She unzipped a tiny pocket hidden beneath its worn fabric.

None of the adults had ever noticed it before.

From inside...

She pulled out a small brass key.

Not the gold key Claire had kept.

A different one.

Tiny.

Old.

With the Mercer family crest engraved on its head.

Arthur's hands began to tremble.

He recognized it instantly.

It was the master key to a safety deposit box that had remained unopened for exactly three years.

And according to Arthur's records...

Only one person had ever possessed it.

May you like

Isabella Mercer.
