Chapter 14: The Final Confession

The convoy reached Saint Gabriel Cemetery just before dawn.

A blanket of fog drifted between rows of weathered headstones, muting every sound except the crunch of gravel beneath the tires.

Hayes stepped out first.

His team spread through the cemetery with practiced precision.

"Perimeter Alpha."

"Secure."

"Perimeter Bravo."

"Clear."

Julian helped Emma from the SUV.

She held Ellie's paw tightly.

Claire wrapped a warm coat around her shoulders.

"Stay close to me."

Emma nodded.

"I will."

Arthur remained standing beside the gate for a long moment.

He had attended Isabella's funeral here.

He had believed he was saying goodbye to both his daughter-in-law...

...and his granddaughter.

Now he wasn't sure what had truly happened that day.

Hayes approached.

"We found Father Michael's car."

"Where?"

"Behind the old chapel."

Julian looked toward the small stone church at the far end of the cemetery.

Its wooden doors stood slightly open.

Arthur whispered,

"He knew we'd come."

The team entered carefully.

The chapel was empty.

Candles burned along the altar.

Freshly lit.

On the front pew rested a leather Bible.

Inside it lay a folded letter.

Addressed simply:

Arthur.

Arthur unfolded it.

His old friend's handwriting was unmistakable.

Arthur,

If you are reading this, I have already broken every promise I ever made to you.

You deserve the truth.

I was never the traitor.

But I became something almost as terrible.

I remained silent.

Arthur's hands trembled.

He continued reading.

Three years ago, Victor came to me.

He had uncovered evidence that someone had infiltrated Project Aurora.

He begged me to warn you.

I hesitated.

I wanted proof.

My hesitation cost Isabella her life.

Arthur closed his eyes.

A lifetime of regret seemed to settle across his face.

Julian gently took the letter.

He continued aloud.

The person controlling everything was never interested in your empire.

They wanted Project Aurora because it could hide people forever.

A network capable of making children disappear could also make criminals disappear.

That was the prize.

Hayes looked up.

"It was never about money."

Arthur nodded sadly.

"It was always about the network."

Julian continued reading.

Victor escaped with Aurora.

He found Claire by chance.

He believed no one would suspect an ordinary nurse.

He placed the child in her arms and asked only one thing:

Protect her until the right people find her.

Claire burst into tears.

"So... it was Victor."

Arthur looked at her.

"He chose well."

The final paragraph was different.

The handwriting had become shaky.

Uneven.

As though written under great stress.

They found me last month.

They offered me one final bargain.

Bring them the child...

...or watch every family inside Project Aurora die.

I refused.

Then they began proving they weren't bluffing.

Hayes frowned.

"What does he mean?"

Before anyone could answer...

His phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"Commander."

His expression darkened.

"What?"

Julian looked at him.

"What happened?"

Hayes lowered the phone.

"Three Project Aurora safe houses..."

He swallowed.

"...were attacked overnight."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"They've started."

At that exact moment...

The chapel organ began playing by itself.

A slow...

Melancholy hymn.

Emma looked toward the balcony.

"Someone's up there."

Every weapon in the room turned upward.

A lone figure stepped into view.

Father Michael.

He wasn't holding a gun.

Only a small remote control.

His tired blue eyes settled on Arthur.

"I'm sorry."

Arthur took one step forward.

"Michael."

"You don't have to do this."

The old priest smiled sadly.

"I wish that were true."

Julian moved protectively in front of Emma.

"Where is your employer?"

Father Michael shook his head.

"You still don't understand."

"I've never met the person giving the orders."

Hayes frowned.

"You're lying."

"No."

"They've hidden behind intermediaries for decades."

Arthur looked directly at his old friend.

"Then why come here?"

Father Michael looked at Emma.

"To warn you."

He held up the remote.

"This isn't a weapon."

He pressed the button.

A projector hidden above the altar flickered to life.

A face appeared on the chapel wall.

Not live.

Pre-recorded.

The image showed a man wearing a white porcelain mask.

Only his eyes were visible.

Calm.

Cold.

Intelligent.

The masked man spoke.

"If you are watching this..."

"...then Father Michael disappointed me."

The priest lowered his head.

The recording continued.

"I expected as much."

"So let's stop pretending."

The masked figure slowly removed one glove.

On his wrist...

A tattoo.

A black phoenix encircled by seven stars.

Arthur's face changed instantly.

"The Seven..."

The masked man smiled beneath the porcelain mask.

"At last."

"You remember us."

He continued.

"You've spent three years chasing ghosts."

"Victor."

"Michael."

"Your own family."

"They were all useful distractions."

Julian's voice became ice.

"Who are you?"

The masked man chuckled.

"A question for another day."

"But I will leave you with one truth."

He looked directly into the camera.

Then spoke the sentence that shattered everything they believed.

"Emma Dawson is your daughter, Julian."

Julian froze.

Claire gasped.

Arthur gripped the back of a pew.

Emma looked up in confusion.

The masked man wasn't finished.

"...but she was never Aurora."

The recording ended.

The projector switched off.

Silence filled the chapel.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Every assumption they had built over the past days had just collapsed.

Julian slowly turned toward Emma.

The little girl looked back at him with frightened eyes.

"...Am I in trouble?"

Julian knelt in front of her.

He wrapped his arms around her without saying a word.

Because for the first time...

May you like

He didn't know which question he needed answered first.
