Chapter 13: The Name Hidden in the Ashes

The television screen dissolved into static.

No one reached to turn it off.

The room remained frozen beneath the harsh white glow of the old monitor.

Victor's final words echoed through the silence.

"The traitor has never been a Mercer."

Arthur lowered himself slowly into a chair.

For the first time in years, the man who had built the Mercer empire looked genuinely defeated.

"I condemned my own brother..."

he whispered.

"...without ever hearing his side."

Julian didn't answer.

His thoughts raced through every assumption he had made over the past three years.

Every investigation.

Every suspect.

Every conclusion.

If Victor had been protecting Isabella instead of betraying her...

Then someone else had orchestrated the attack.

Someone close enough to know every security protocol.

Someone trusted by everyone.

Hayes broke the silence.

"We need evidence."

Arthur nodded.

"Not theories."

"Evidence."

Claire quietly looked toward Emma, who had fallen asleep on the sofa, still hugging Ellie.

The child had no idea that the adults around her had just uncovered another layer of lies surrounding her life.

Claire gently covered her with a blanket.

"We're running out of time."

Julian looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

Claire answered honestly.

"They know she's alive."

"They know she's here."

"The next attack won't be a warning."

No one disagreed.

Hayes' secure phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

"Sir."

"The audio lab."

Julian stood immediately.

"What did they recover?"

Hayes answered,

"They cleaned part of the surveillance recording."

"Not the face."

"The background."

Arthur frowned.

"The background?"

"They isolated another voice."

Minutes later, everyone gathered around the conference room speakers.

The technician spoke through an encrypted connection.

"We enhanced the recording frame by frame."

"The main conversation is still damaged."

"But during the last two seconds..."

"...someone else speaks."

The room became silent.

The recording played.

Static.

Footsteps.

Victor's distorted voice.

Then...

Another voice.

Calm.

Male.

Only three words.

"Proceed, Chancellor."

The audio ended.

Hayes replayed it.

Again.

And again.

Arthur's eyes slowly narrowed.

"I know that title."

Julian looked at him.

"Chancellor?"

Arthur nodded.

"It wasn't a government position."

"It was a codename."

Arthur walked toward one of the old bookshelves.

He removed a faded leather binder marked:

Internal Security Protocols

He flipped through yellowed pages until he found a handwritten list.

Organization Codenames.

Founder.

Guardian.

Sentinel.

Courier.

Chancellor.

Hayes looked over his shoulder.

"What is this?"

Arthur answered quietly.

"The codenames used by Project Aurora's founding members."

Claire frowned.

"How many were there?"

Arthur counted.

"Seven."

Julian's expression hardened.

"So the traitor..."

"...was one of the founders."

Arthur nodded grimly.

"One of the seven people who built the network with me."

Samuel, who had been listening silently near the doorway, suddenly spoke.

"Sir..."

Everyone turned.

"I remember something."

Arthur looked surprised.

"What?"

Samuel hesitated.

"The founders met here every Christmas."

Arthur nodded.

"They did."

Samuel swallowed.

"The year before Isabella disappeared..."

"...one of them never came."

Arthur froze.

"Who?"

Samuel closed his eyes, searching his memory.

"It wasn't Victor."

"It wasn't Doctor Ellis."

"It wasn't Judge Collins."

"It was..."

He stopped.

Hayes leaned forward.

"Who?"

Samuel whispered,

"...Father Michael."

Silence crashed over the room.

Claire looked stunned.

"The priest?"

Arthur shook his head.

"No."

"It can't be."

Julian remained calm.

"Why not?"

Arthur answered immediately.

"Michael baptized you."

"He buried my wife."

"He helped build orphanages with Isabella."

"He has been my closest friend for forty years."

Julian asked quietly,

"How well did you know Victor?"

Arthur looked down.

The question landed harder than expected.

Not well enough.

Hayes immediately contacted his team.

"Locate Father Michael."

The answer came less than two minutes later.

"Commander..."

"The church is empty."

"When did he leave?"

"Approximately thirty minutes after visiting Mercer Manor."

"Destination?"

"Unknown."

Hayes slowly lowered the phone.

"He's gone."

Arthur refused to believe it.

"No."

"Michael would never..."

His sentence remained unfinished.

A young analyst rushed into the room carrying a tablet.

"Sir!"

"We found something."

He connected the tablet to the large display.

Old financial records appeared.

Donations.

Church accounts.

Charitable foundations.

Nothing unusual.

Until one transfer caught Hayes' attention.

Three years earlier.

Exactly two days before Isabella's disappearance.

A donation of fifty million dollars.

Recipient:

St. Gabriel Children's Mission

Director:

Father Michael Donovan.

Arthur frowned.

"The mission never received that money."

The analyst nodded.

"It was transferred..."

"...then withdrawn in cash six hours later."

Julian's eyes hardened.

"Track every property registered to Father Michael."

The analyst typed rapidly.

"There are only three."

"A parish house."

"A retreat center."

"And..."

He stopped.

"What?"

"A cemetery."

Claire blinked.

"A cemetery?"

The analyst nodded.

"He purchased private land beside Saint Gabriel Cemetery eight years ago."

Arthur's face slowly lost color.

"That's where..."

Julian looked at him.

"Where what?"

Arthur answered in a whisper.

"That's where Isabella is buried."

No one spoke.

The realization settled over them like ice.

If Father Michael had bought land surrounding Isabella's grave years before her death...

Then it had never been a coincidence.

It had been preparation.

At that exact moment...

Miles away...

Father Michael stood alone before Isabella's grave.

The evening wind rustled the trees.

He removed his priest's collar.

Then reached into his coat.

Not for a Bible.

For a satellite phone.

He dialed one number.

The call connected instantly.

A calm voice answered.

"Report."

Father Michael looked down at the gravestone.

"They found the tapes."

A pause.

"And Arthur?"

"He knows Victor was innocent."

Another silence.

Finally, the unseen voice asked,

"Can you still finish your mission?"

Father Michael closed his eyes.

A tear rolled down his weathered face.

When he opened them again...

The warmth was gone.

Only resolve remained.

"Yes."

"I'll bring the child myself."

The call ended.

Father Michael knelt before Isabella's grave and whispered so softly that only the wind could hear:

"I'm sorry."

"I truly loved you like a daughter."

Then he stood...

May you like

...and walked into the darkness.
