Chapter 7: The Secret Buried Beneath the Past

The message was only four words.

THE CLOCK HAS STARTED.

But Adrian Moretti had learned something over the years.

The most dangerous threats were rarely the loud ones.

A gunshot announced itself.

A bomb created chaos.

An enemy standing in front of you gave you something to fight.

But a clock...

A clock meant someone had already made a decision.

And now everyone else was simply waiting for the consequences.

Vincent arrived at Adrian's private residence before sunrise.

No security convoy.

No warning.

That alone was unusual.

Adrian was standing in front of the window, watching the city wake up.

The skyline was beautiful.

Almost peaceful.

He hated that.

Peace always made people careless.

"Tell me."

Vincent placed the encrypted device on the table.

"We traced the message."

"And?"

"Nothing."

Adrian turned.

"Nothing?"

"No server."

"No location."

"No digital fingerprint."

"Whoever sent it knows exactly how we investigate."

Adrian stared at the screen.

"Volkov?"

Vincent hesitated.

"No."

That answer caught Adrian's attention.

"You're sure?"

"Volkov likes intimidation."

Vincent tapped the device.

"This is different."

"How?"

"Volkov wants people to know he's coming."

He looked at Adrian.

"This person wants us to know they already arrived."

Silence.

The security team spent six hours analyzing every piece of information from the museum incident.

The conclusion was worse than expected.

The attackers weren't trying to kidnap Lily.

They weren't trying to kill Adrian.

They were measuring him.

Studying his reaction.

Finding the exact point where the man who controlled an empire stopped thinking like a strategist...

...and started acting like a father.

The answer was simple.

The moment Lily was threatened.

Adrian Moretti became predictable.

And predictable people could be controlled.

Sarah sat across from Adrian that afternoon.

Lily was in the next room watching cartoons.

A normal sound.

A dangerous illusion.

"I need to ask you something."

Adrian looked up.

"Anything."

"Who is really after you?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Sarah noticed.

"You always do that."

"Do what?"

"Calculate."

She leaned forward.

"You decide what information people can handle."

Adrian looked toward Lily's room.

"Because information can hurt people."

"So can silence."

The words landed.

Because they were true.

For years, Adrian had protected Sarah through absence.

Protected Lily through distance.

Protected everyone by keeping them outside the walls around him.

But walls didn't only keep enemies away.

They kept loved ones out too.

"His name is Dimitri Volkov."

Sarah's expression changed slightly.

"Why does he want you?"

"Business."

"That's not the whole answer."

"No."

Adrian looked down.

"You're right."

He walked to the bookshelf.

Removed an old leather folder.

Sarah recognized it immediately.

"You kept that?"

"I kept everything."

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Newspaper clippings.

A history neither of them had spoken about in years.

"My father."

Sarah became quiet.

Adrian opened the first photograph.

A younger man.

Powerful.

Respected.

Terrifying.

"My father built the foundation of everything I have now."

"And Volkov?"

"His enemy."

Adrian continued.

"Thirty years ago, my father and Volkov were partners."

Sarah frowned.

"Partners?"

"They controlled different parts of the city."

"Until they didn't."

He turned another page.

"Volkov wanted expansion."

"My father refused."

"Why?"

"Because he knew what Volkov would become."

Adrian's voice lowered.

"A man who didn't know when to stop."

"My father died when I was twenty-one."

Sarah remembered.

"He was murdered."

Adrian nodded.

"Everyone believed it was a random attack."

"But you didn't."

"No."

He stared at the photograph.

"Because my father had one rule."

"What rule?"

"He always had a second plan."

Sarah looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

"It means before he died..."

Adrian paused.

"...he left evidence."

The room became silent.

"Evidence of what?"

Adrian looked at the folder.

"That Volkov wasn't just trying to take over the city."

"He was trying to control everyone inside it."

For years, Adrian had kept the truth buried.

Because exposing it would have started a war.

A war he wasn't ready to fight.

A war that would have destroyed everything around him.

But now...

The past had returned.

And it knew Lily's name.

"My father discovered something."

"What?"

"A network."

Sarah waited.

"Not criminals."

"Not gangs."

"Something bigger."

Adrian placed another document on the table.

Names.

Companies.

Political connections.

Powerful people.

"Volkov built influence everywhere."

"He wasn't just buying weapons."

"He was buying silence."

Sarah looked disturbed.

"And your father tried to stop him."

"Yes."

"And Volkov killed him."

Adrian didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

The door opened.

Lily appeared holding Mr. Buttons.

"Why are you both serious?"

Instantly...

The entire atmosphere changed.

Adrian closed the folder.

Sarah smiled.

"Nothing."

Lily looked suspicious.

"Adults always say nothing when it's something."

Adrian looked at Sarah.

Then at Lily.

He almost smiled.

"She's definitely your daughter."

Sarah laughed.

"Unfortunately, yes."

Lily climbed onto the couch.

"Can we make pancakes?"

Adrian looked surprised.

"Now?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because pancakes fix bad moods."

He considered this.

"That sounds scientifically questionable."

Lily nodded.

"Still true."

Adrian looked at Sarah.

She shrugged.

"She's usually right."

So the man who had negotiated billion-dollar contracts...

Ended up standing in a kitchen making pancakes.

And somehow...

That felt more important.

Later that evening...

While Lily slept...

Adrian returned to the folder.

He studied his father's documents again.

Something bothered him.

Something he had ignored for years.

A missing page.

One section of evidence was incomplete.

His father's final notes mentioned one sentence:

"If they find out about the girl, they will use her."

Adrian froze.

The words stared back at him.

The girl.

Not a daughter.

Not a child.

The girl.

How could his father have known?

Lily didn't exist when his father died.

Unless...

His father wasn't talking about Lily.

Unless there was another secret.

A secret hidden before Adrian even became a father.

At midnight...

Adrian met Vincent in the underground operations room.

"I need everything on my father."

Vincent looked surprised.

"We already have everything."

"No."

Adrian placed the old document on the table.

"We have what he wanted us to find."

Vincent read the sentence.

His expression changed.

"When was this written?"

"Two days before he died."

Vincent slowly looked up.

"Adrian..."

"I know."

"That's impossible."

"Maybe."

He stared at the screen.

"But my father knew something."

"Something connected to Volkov."

"And something connected to a child."

The investigation began immediately.

Old records.

Old contacts.

Old enemies.

Within three hours...

They found something.

A name.

Hidden inside a sealed archive.

A name Adrian had never seen before.

Elena Moretti.

Vincent frowned.

"Who is she?"

Adrian stared at the screen.

The name felt familiar.

But impossible.

"My father never mentioned a sister."

The file opened.

A photograph appeared.

A young woman.

Same eyes.

Same family resemblance.

Same Moretti bloodline.

Below the picture was one sentence:

Status: Unknown.

And another note:

Last seen with Dimitri Volkov.

Adrian stepped backward.

For the first time in years...

He looked genuinely shocked.

"That's impossible."

Vincent stared at him.

"Why?"

Adrian couldn't take his eyes off the photograph.

Because he knew that face.

Not personally.

But from somewhere.

From memories.

From old family albums.

From a childhood everyone had told him was complete.

"My father said I was an only child."

Vincent remained silent.

Adrian whispered:

"He lied."

Across the city...

Dimitri Volkov stood inside a private room.

A woman sat across from him.

Older now.

But unmistakably the same person in the photograph.

Elena Moretti.

She watched the news playing silently on the television.

A picture of Adrian appeared.

Then Lily.

The woman smiled faintly.

"He's finally found her."

Volkov poured two glasses of wine.

"Yes."

"He spent his entire life running from his family."

"And now?"

Volkov handed her a glass.

"Now he's about to discover..."

"...the family he lost."

The woman looked toward the screen.

"And the daughter he gained."

A pause.

"Which one will destroy him first?"

Volkov smiled.

"That..."

May you like

"...is what we are going to find out."
