Chapter 13: The Shadow Inside the House

The first thing Adrian did was not chase.
Not shout.
Not demand answers.
He held Lily tighter.
Because for a single terrifying second...
The world had become the same nightmare he had feared since the day she was born.
A world where he was too late.
A world where he arrived after the damage was done.
But Lily was there.
Warm.
Breathing.
Safe.
For now.
"Where did he go?"
Adrian's voice was calm.
Too calm.
Sarah knew that tone.
It was the voice he used before making impossible decisions.
Lily pointed toward the window.
"He was there."
"Did he come inside?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"Did he talk to you?"
"A little."
"What did he look like?"
Lily thought carefully.
"Like you."
The room froze.
Sarah looked at Adrian.
Elena stood slowly.
Luca's expression changed.
"What do you mean?"
Lily looked at the adults.
"He had your eyes."
She pointed at Adrian.
"But he looked sad."
A child describing a stranger.
Yet somehow...
The description felt like a warning.
Within minutes, the apartment became a controlled zone.
Security teams arrived silently.
No sirens.
No panic.
No chaos.
Adrian hated that it was necessary.
Because every person entering the apartment was another reminder.
His daughter was no longer living an ordinary life.
The normal childhood he wanted for her was being replaced by the same world he had tried to keep away from her.
Vincent approached.
"No signs of forced entry."
"Windows?"
"Locked."
"Security system?"
"Never activated."
Adrian looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
Vincent's expression darkened.
"It means whoever was here..."
A pause.
"Wasn't trying to break in."
"They wanted us to know they could."
The message was clear.
Someone had entered the one place Adrian considered untouchable.
Not to hurt Lily.
Not to steal anything.
To send a message.
They wanted him to understand.
Your walls mean nothing.
Your security means nothing.
Your power means nothing.
Because the enemy had reached the one place even Adrian couldn't defend.
His mind.
That night, Adrian refused to leave Lily's room.
She was asleep.
One small hand held Mr. Buttons.
The other rested near the edge of the blanket.
Like she was making sure someone was still there.
Adrian sat beside her.
Watching.
Waiting.
Sarah entered quietly.
"You haven't moved."
"No."
"You need sleep."
"I can't."
She sat beside him.
"You keep saying that."
"Because it's true."
Sarah looked at Lily.
"Do you remember what you told me years ago?"
Adrian looked at her.
"What?"
"When Lily was born."
A faint sadness crossed Sarah's face.
"You said the world was too dangerous for her."
Adrian remained silent.
"You said if she never knew you, enemies couldn't use her."
He lowered his eyes.
"I remember."
Sarah whispered:
"You were wrong about one thing."
"What?"
"She was always going to be your daughter."
A pause.
"No matter how far you stood away."
Adrian looked at Lily.
The truth hurt.
Because Sarah was right.
Distance had never erased their connection.
It had only stolen time.
The next morning...
Elena arrived with a folder.
"I know who visited."
Adrian turned.
"Who?"
She placed an old photograph on the table.
A young man.
Standing beside Marco Moretti.
Adrian recognized him.
Not because he knew him.
Because of the eyes.
The same eyes Lily had described.
"His name?"
Elena looked at him.
"Gabriel."
Adrian frowned.
"Another brother?"
"No."
A pause.
"The opposite."
"What does that mean?"
Elena sat down.
"Gabriel wasn't family."
"Then why does he look like us?"
She opened the folder.
Inside were medical records.
DNA reports.
Photographs.
Adrian's expression changed.
"Explain."
Elena's voice became quiet.
"Years ago, Volkov discovered something."
"What?"
"Your father had enemies who wanted him destroyed."
"That's not new."
"No."
She looked at the documents.
"But one enemy was different."
Adrian waited.
"Someone wanted revenge."
"Not money."
"Not power."
"Revenge."
"Gabriel was created from that revenge."
The words sounded impossible.
Adrian stared.
"What?"
Elena continued.
"There was a woman."
"Someone your father betrayed."
"She had a child."
"And Volkov found them."
Adrian understood slowly.
"No."
"He didn't..."
"He did."
Elena looked at him.
"Volkov used Gabriel."
"Changed his life."
"Filled his head with one belief."
"What belief?"
She whispered:
"That the Moretti family stole his future."
The room became silent.
Another person broken by the past.
Another life destroyed by Marco Moretti's choices.
Adrian looked toward Lily's room.
The pattern was becoming clear.
His father left behind more than money.
More than enemies.
He left behind people carrying pain.
And those people were now coming for his children.
"I need to speak with Gabriel."
Vincent immediately objected.
"No."
Adrian looked at him.
"No?"
"You don't know what he wants."
"He wants answers."
"He wants revenge."
Adrian stood.
"Then I'll give him answers."
Vincent shook his head.
"That's exactly what he wants."
Adrian looked back.
"What do you mean?"
"He wants you emotional."
"Just like Volkov."
"Exactly."
That afternoon...
The meeting was arranged.
Not at a warehouse.
Not somewhere isolated.
A public location.
A place with cameras.
Witnesses.
People.
Adrian refused to make the same mistake twice.
Gabriel arrived alone.
The resemblance was disturbing.
Not because they looked identical.
Because they carried the same loneliness.
He sat across from Adrian.
For a long moment...
Neither spoke.
Finally Gabriel smiled.
"So."
"The golden son."
Adrian's expression didn't change.
"You're Gabriel."
"Good."
"You know my name."
"I know everything."
"Then you know I don't want a fight."
Gabriel laughed quietly.
"That's the problem with you."
"What?"
"You think you get to decide what happens."
Adrian studied him.
"Did Volkov tell you everything?"
Gabriel's expression changed.
"Don't say his name like that."
"Why?"
"Because he saved me."
Adrian leaned forward.
"No."
"He used you."
Gabriel's jaw tightened.
"You sound like him."
"Like who?"
"Marco."
The name carried poison.
"You both think you know what's best."
Adrian remained calm.
"I don't."
"Then what do you know?"
A pause.
"I know you were hurt."
Gabriel's eyes narrowed.
"I know someone took advantage of that."
"And I know..."
Adrian looked directly at him.
"...you came to my daughter's room because you wanted me to understand your pain."
The words struck.
Gabriel looked away.
Because they were true.
For a moment...
The anger disappeared.
Only a damaged person remained.
Then his phone rang.
Gabriel looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
Adrian noticed.
"Who is it?"
No answer.
The call ended.
A message appeared.
Gabriel read it.
Then slowly stood.
"What did he say?"
Gabriel looked at Adrian.
"He said..."
A pause.
"He said if I don't finish this..."
"...he'll finish it for me."
Adrian understood immediately.
Volkov.
Still controlling the board.
Still moving pieces.
That night...
Gabriel disappeared.
Not escaped.
Not ran.
Disappeared.
Every camera.
Every trace.
Every record.
Gone.
Vincent looked at Adrian.
"This is bad."
Adrian stared at the empty screen.
"Why?"
"Because Gabriel wasn't the threat."
"Then who?"
Vincent looked at the city outside.
"The person controlling him."
Meanwhile...
Inside a hidden room beneath an abandoned building...
Gabriel stood in front of Volkov.
"You lied to me."
Volkov didn't react.
"I told you what you needed to know."
"You told me Adrian was the enemy."
"He is."
"No."
Gabriel's voice shook.
"He looked at me the same way I looked at him."
Silence.
Volkov slowly turned.
"You are confused."
"No."
Gabriel stepped back.
"For the first time..."
"I see clearly."
Volkov's expression hardened.
"Be careful."
"Why?"
"Because truth is dangerous."
Gabriel looked at him.
"So is a lie."
At that moment...
Adrian received a final message.
Not from Volkov.
Not from Gabriel.
From an unknown number.
One sentence.
YOUR FATHER LEFT ONE LAST SECRET.
Attached was a photograph.
A hospital room.
A newborn baby.
A woman crying.
And beside them...
Marco Moretti.
Holding a child.
Below the image:
THE CHILD HE NEVER TOLD YOU ABOUT.
Adrian stared.
His hands went cold.
Because he finally understood.
The secrets were never ending.
They were multiplying.
And somewhere in the darkness...
May you like
Someone was waiting for him to discover the final truth.
