Chapter 6: The Day Everything Changed

Adrian Moretti had spent his entire life preparing for moments like this.

He had plans for assassinations.

Plans for betrayals.

Plans for wars.

Every possible threat had a countermeasure.

Every enemy had a weakness.

Every attack had a response.

Except this.

Because no strategy manual could explain what happened when the battlefield was no longer a building...

...but a child's heart.

The next morning, Adrian woke before the sun.

Not because of pain.

Not because of fear.

Because Lily had sent him a message.

A voice message.

Six seconds long.

His phone had played it at 6:12 a.m.

"Adrian, I lost Mr. Buttons for five minutes, but I found him. He's okay. I think he was hiding because he wanted breakfast."

That was it.

Six seconds.

A completely ordinary message from a four-year-old.

Yet Adrian had listened to it twenty-seven times.

Vincent entered the room and stopped.

"You've heard that already."

Adrian looked up.

"How many times?"

"Twenty-seven."

He looked slightly embarrassed.

Vincent almost smiled.

"You're becoming normal."

Adrian placed the phone down.

"That sounds dangerous."

"It might be."

At 8:00 a.m., Adrian arrived at Sarah's apartment.

Lily opened the door before anyone else could.

She was wearing a yellow dress and holding Mr. Buttons.

"You came early."

"I did."

"Why?"

He thought carefully.

Because enemies were watching.

Because danger was moving closer.

Because every second mattered.

But he couldn't tell her that.

"Because I wanted to see you."

Lily accepted that immediately.

"Good answer."

Adrian smiled.

"You grade answers now?"

"Sometimes."

"What's my score?"

She pretended to think.

"Eight."

"Out of ten?"

"Out of ten."

"Why not ten?"

"You didn't bring cookies."

He nodded seriously.

"A serious mistake."

Sarah watched the interaction silently.

She noticed something.

Adrian was different.

Not weaker.

Different.

Before Lily, every decision he made had been based on survival.

Now...

Every decision had a reason.

A person.

A future.

That terrified her.

Because love gave people something worth fighting for.

But it also gave enemies something worth attacking.

The plan for the day was simple.

A normal family outing.

No private meetings.

No business.

No discussions about danger.

Just a trip to the natural history museum.

Lily had been asking for weeks.

"Dinosaurs."

She said it repeatedly.

"Big dinosaurs."

Adrian nodded.

"Very important dinosaurs."

"The biggest."

"I understand."

"Do you?"

"Absolutely."

"You don't."

He looked offended.

"I understand dinosaurs."

Sarah laughed.

"You know nothing about dinosaurs."

"I know enough."

"What does a T-Rex eat?"

Adrian answered immediately.

"Whatever it wants."

Lily clapped.

"Correct."

Sarah shook her head.

"That was not the answer."

"It worked."

The museum was crowded.

Families everywhere.

Children laughing.

Parents taking photos.

A perfect environment.

Which meant a dangerous one.

Vincent had warned him.

Crowds created uncertainty.

Too many people.

Too many angles.

Too many variables.

Adrian knew.

But Lily was holding his hand.

And for once...

He wanted to experience life instead of calculating threats.

The dinosaur exhibit was Lily's kingdom.

She ran from display to display.

"Look!"

"A giant one!"

"Look!"

"That one has tiny arms!"

Adrian followed seriously.

"An interesting design choice."

Sarah smiled.

"You're actually enjoying this."

"I am."

"I never thought I'd see you fascinated by plastic dinosaurs."

"Neither did I."

A small boy bumped into Adrian accidentally.

The boy immediately looked scared.

"Sorry."

Adrian crouched.

"It's okay."

The boy looked surprised.

"You aren't mad?"

"No."

"Why?"

Adrian glanced at Lily.

"Because mistakes happen."

The boy smiled and ran away.

Sarah watched quietly.

She remembered the old Adrian.

Cold.

Controlled.

Untouchable.

This man was still there.

But now someone else existed beside him.

At 12:47 p.m....

The first warning came.

A reflection.

Nothing more.

Adrian saw it in the glass display.

A man standing too still.

Everyone else moved naturally.

He didn't.

His eyes tracked.

His posture was controlled.

Professional.

Adrian's smile disappeared for half a second.

Sarah noticed.

"What?"

"Nothing."

She knew him too well.

"Adrian."

He leaned closer.

"Take Lily to the marine exhibit."

Her expression changed.

"Why?"

"Please."

The seriousness in his voice answered before words did.

She grabbed Lily's hand.

"Come on, sweetheart."

"But I want to see the dinosaur bones."

"We'll come back."

Lily looked disappointed.

"But..."

Sarah squeezed her hand.

"Trust me."

Adrian waited.

Thirty seconds.

Then forty.

The man moved.

Exactly as expected.

Following.

Not chasing.

Testing.

Adrian walked toward him.

The crowd moved around them.

Two strangers crossing paths.

Except both knew exactly why they were there.

"You've been watching my family."

The man smiled faintly.

"You're faster than expected."

"Who are you?"

The man didn't answer.

Instead, he looked past Adrian.

Toward the marine exhibit.

Toward Lily.

That single glance was enough.

Adrian's entire body changed.

The calm disappeared.

The warning became real.

"Don't look at her."

The man's smile widened.

"There it is."

"What?"

"The thing Volkov wanted to see."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"You work for Volkov."

"Not exactly."

"Then who?"

The man stepped closer.

"Someone who wanted proof."

"Proof of what?"

"That Adrian Moretti still has a heart."

The man's hand moved.

Too quickly.

Adrian reacted instantly.

He grabbed the man's wrist before the weapon appeared.

The crowd screamed.

People moved away.

The confrontation lasted only seconds.

But seconds were enough.

The man wasn't trying to win.

He was trying to create chaos.

A distraction.

Adrian realized too late.

The man wasn't alone.

A second figure moved through the crowd.

Toward the marine exhibit.

Toward Sarah.

Toward Lily.

His blood turned cold.

"NO."

Adrian released the first attacker and sprinted.

For the first time in years...

He didn't care about strategy.

Didn't care about exposure.

Didn't care who saw him.

Only one thought existed.

Lily.

Sarah noticed the stranger approaching before he reached them.

Mother's instinct.

A warning older than fear.

She pulled Lily behind her.

"Stay close."

The man smiled.

"Ms. Bennett."

Sarah froze.

"You know my name."

"I know everything."

Before he could move closer...

A security officer appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

Adrian had prepared.

The man looked around.

Too many obstacles.

Too many witnesses.

Too much attention.

He stepped back.

Mission failed.

But he smiled.

Because he had learned what he needed.

Adrian arrived seconds later.

He pulled Lily into his arms.

She was confused.

"Adrian?"

He held her tightly.

Too tightly.

"Are you okay?"

She nodded.

"Why are you scared?"

That question destroyed him.

Because she saw it.

The fear.

The one thing he never allowed anyone to see.

"I thought I lost you."

Lily touched his face.

"But I'm here."

Simple.

Pure.

A child's answer.

That night...

The museum incident dominated the news.

A "security disturbance."

Nothing more.

The public never learned the truth.

But Volkov did.

A video played inside his office.

Adrian running through the crowd.

Adrian abandoning everything.

Adrian choosing Lily.

Volkov watched silently.

Then turned off the screen.

"Now we know."

His assistant waited.

"What?"

Volkov smiled.

"The girl isn't his weakness."

He looked toward the city.

"She's his reason."

A pause.

"And people with a reason..."

"...are far more dangerous than people with nothing."

Inside Sarah's apartment...

Lily slept peacefully.

Mr. Buttons rested beside her.

Adrian sat outside her bedroom door.

Still awake.

Still watching.

Sarah approached quietly.

"You should sleep."

"I can't."

"You need rest."

He looked toward the door.

"What if something happens?"

Sarah sat beside him.

"Adrian."

He didn't answer.

"You can't protect her by being afraid every second."

He looked down.

"I almost lost her."

"But you didn't."

"Today."

Sarah understood.

The word he didn't say.

Tomorrow.

Next week.

Next month.

The danger wasn't over.

It had only begun.

She placed a hand over his.

"She needs a father."

He looked at her.

"Not a soldier."

The words stayed between them.

Then Sarah whispered:

"Don't let Volkov take that away from her."

Adrian looked toward Lily's room.

His voice became quiet.

"He won't."

A pause.

"Even if I have to fight the entire city."

At that exact moment...

A message arrived on Vincent's encrypted device.

One sentence.

No sender.

No location.

Only four words.

THE CLOCK HAS STARTED.

Vincent stared at the screen.

Then immediately called Adrian.

Because this time...

The enemy wasn't watching.

May you like

They were moving.
