Chapter 6 - The Hundred Million TrapThe Money Was Never the PrizeBy sunrise, every financial network in the country was talking about the Carter Holdings transfer.

One hundred million dollars.

Moved at 4:17 a.m.

From a trust created eleven years earlier.

To Alexander Carter.

The company's stock began collapsing before the markets even opened.

News channels ran his photograph beneath headlines accusing him of hidden offshore accounts.

Alexander stood inside the Carter Tower conference room watching the numbers fall.

Elena sat beside Sofie.

Martin Vale had been taken away.

But something was wrong.

Alexander knew it.

The transfer had been too perfect.

Too public.

Too timed.

It was designed to make him look guilty.

Richard appeared on every channel that morning.

“I warned the board,” he said calmly.

“Alexander has concealed assets and manipulated the company's accounts.”

Alexander switched off the television.

“He's moving first.”

Elena looked at him.

“Because he knows you found the truth.”

Alexander nodded.

Sofie was drawing on a piece of paper.

Three circles.

A straight line.

Again.

Alexander looked.

“What does that mean?”

She said nothing.

He watched her pencil.

Three circles.

Line.

Then a square.

He suddenly remembered something from his father's old notebooks.

A diagram.

A building.

The Carter Tower.

Level 47.

Alexander stood.

“There's another room.”

Elena looked confused.

“Where?”

“Under the tower.”

He pulled up architectural plans.

“Level 47 has no floor registered.”

Elena stared.

“That's where William kept the archive.”

Alexander enlarged the plans.

A hidden chamber existed between the forty-seventh and forty-eighth floors.

No elevator.

No staircase.

No access point.

He looked at Sofie.

She had stopped drawing.

“Is that it?”

Sofie nodded.

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

She pointed at the square.

“Because Grandpa put it there.”

Elena stared at Alexander.

“How could she know?”

Alexander didn't answer.

At noon, the board convened.

Richard arrived.

He was accompanied by attorneys.

He walked into the room with the confidence of a man who believed he had already won.

“Alexander,” he said.

Alexander looked up.

“Richard.”

“The board would like you to step aside while the investigation proceeds.”

“What investigation?”

“The transfer.”

“You arranged it.”

Richard smiled.

“Can you prove that?”

Alexander leaned back.

“You're forgetting something.”

“What?”

“Your security chief was arrested this morning.”

Richard's smile faded.

“He worked for someone.”

“I know.”

“Then ask yourself why he stopped taking orders from me.”

Alexander's eyes narrowed.

“Who gave him orders?”

Richard didn't answer.

A lawyer placed documents on the table.

“There is evidence indicating Mr. Carter authorized a clandestine $100 million transaction.”

Alexander glanced at the signature.

His.

Except he had never signed it.

He picked up the page.

The signature was perfect.

Almost too perfect.

He looked at Elena.

She was staring at the lower corner of the paper.

“What?”

She pointed.

A tiny symbol.

Three circles.

A line.

The same mark.

Alexander realized the signature wasn't the real clue.

The symbol was.

He remembered William's words.

The money is only bait.

Alexander stood.

“You want me removed because the $100 million isn't actually mine.”

Richard smiled.

“For once, you're beginning to understand.”

Alexander looked at him.

“It's a trigger.”

Silence.

“The money wasn't transferred to me.”

Richard's expression changed.

“It was transferred to my name to activate something.”

A lawyer frowned.

“What?”

Alexander didn't answer.

He pulled the bracelet from Sofie's hand.

The blue light was still blinking.

Three short flashes.

One long.

Three short.

Alexander stared.

A code.

He knew it.

His father had used it years ago in private security protocols.

The Orchid Trust wasn't a bank account.

It was a trigger mechanism.

And the money was the signal telling something else to wake up.

Alexander looked toward the ceiling.

“Level 47.”

Richard stepped forward.

“Don't.”

Alexander smiled.

The first genuine smile since the nightmare began.

“Now I know where you're scared I’ll go.”

Richard's face hardened.

“You go there, and people die.”

Alexander stopped.

“Who?”

Richard looked at Elena.

“The people your father failed to save.”

Then he walked out.

Alexander immediately ordered the elevators locked.

He turned to Elena.

“Stay with Sofie.”

“Where are you going?”

“To level 47.”

Sofie tugged his sleeve.

“Daddy.”

Alexander looked down.

“There's a bad man there.”

Alexander froze.

“Richard?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Who?”

Sofie pointed upward.

“The man in the picture.”

Alexander looked toward the hidden photograph.

The scratched-out face.

The red watch.

May you like

Then Sofie whispered:

“He doesn't have a face anymore.”
