Chapter 13 - The Woman Who Was Always the HeirWilliam Carter's Last BetrayalEmergency systems failed one after another.

No lights.

No elevators.

No security cameras.

No communications.

Alexander pulled Elena and Sofie behind the vault.

Daniel stood beside him.

Nicholas was gone.

So was Richard.

“Where did they go?” Daniel asked.

Alexander looked at the dark corridor.

“They knew exactly where to escape.”

A hidden door opened.

Alexander frowned.

“That's not on the blueprint.”

Daniel looked at it.

“Dad.”

They entered.

A narrow passage led deeper beneath the tower.

At the end stood another room.

Smaller.

Older.

Alexander saw his father's desk.

Exactly as it had looked when he was a child.

Books.

A lamp.

A photograph.

And a locked wooden drawer.

On the desk was a note.

ELENA.

Elena approached slowly.

She opened it.

William had written:

I am sorry.

She covered her mouth.

I made you invisible because visibility would have killed you.

Elena read on.

You think I chose Alexander because he was the stronger son. That is not true.

I chose him because he was the only one who could survive knowing the truth.

Alexander stared.

William continued:

Nicholas was never evil when he was a child. Daniel was never weak. Alexander was never fearless. I failed all three.

Elena was crying.

Then William revealed the final truth.

The Carter empire was never supposed to belong to a Carter man.

Alexander stopped.

The next page contained a legal declaration.

William had created a succession structure in which the company would ultimately belong to the person who could prove the Carter family had committed wrongdoing against its own people.

That person was not the most powerful.

Not the oldest.

Not the strongest.

The person most directly harmed by the family.

Elena.

She had lost her career.

Her home.

Her reputation.

Her child's father.

Her future.

The system had selected her as the true beneficiary.

Sofie looked around.

“Mommy won.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

Alexander looked at her.

“What's wrong?”

“I don't want their company.”

“You don't have to.”

“I don't want their money either.”

Alexander frowned.

“You deserve it.”

Elena looked at Sofie.

“I want my daughter to grow up without anyone owning her.”

Alexander understood.

The $100 million suddenly seemed very small.

Not because it was insignificant.

Because the real prize was freedom.

Daniel found another folder.

Inside was a list of Carter employees.

Thousands.

At the bottom William had written:

Pay every person who was sacrificed to build this empire.

Alexander stared.

“The trust isn't just for Elena.”

Daniel shook his head.

“It never was.”

It was a compensation fund.

Workers.

Families.

Whistleblowers.

Patients.

People harmed by Carter decisions.

The money had been hidden for years so the company could survive long enough to repair what it had done.

William's final message appeared on the monitor.

“Alexander.”

He looked up.

“If you reach this room, you must choose.”

Two options appeared.

SAVE THE COMPANY.

SAVE THE PEOPLE.

Alexander stared for a long time.

Then selected:

SAVE THE PEOPLE.

The system asked:

CONFIRM?

He pressed yes.

Every Carter account opened.

Every secret payment became visible.

Every hidden ledger was released.

Every employee compensation fund activated.

The stock market froze.

Governments reacted.

Police began moving.

Nicholas could no longer erase the evidence.

Alexander exhaled.

Then a phone rang.

Daniel answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He handed the phone to Alexander.

A video played.

Nicholas was standing somewhere dark.

Behind him was Richard.

And between them sat Sofie's empty backpack.

Nicholas looked into the camera.

“You chose the people.”

He smiled.

“Now let's see whether you can save your daughter.”

Alexander's heart stopped.

Elena screamed.

“Sofie!”

Sofie was beside her.

Still.

Safe.

Alexander turned.

She was there.

But the video had one more frame.

A photograph.

A different little girl.

Same age.

Same blond hair.

Same eyes.

Alexander stared.

Nicholas whispered:

“You still haven't figured out why the system recognized her.”

The video ended.

Daniel went pale.

“That's not Sofie.”

May you like

Alexander stared at the photograph.

“Then who is she?”
