Chapter 10 - The Day Carter Holdings FellOne Button Could Erase an EmpireBy morning, Carter Holdings was collapsing.

Banks froze credit lines.

Three international partners terminated contracts.

The stock dropped forty-eight percent.

News channels replayed the $100 million transfer.

Alexander watched the chaos from a secure apartment.

His empire was disappearing in real time.

Daniel sat across from him.

Elena held Sofie close.

“We need to open the safe,” Alexander said.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because that's what Kane wants.”

“He already knows where it is.”

“That's not the problem.”

Daniel pointed to the files.

“The safe contains a fail-safe.”

Alexander stared.

“One command can freeze Carter Holdings.”

“And another can release everything.”

“To whom?”

Daniel looked at Sofie.

Alexander's expression changed.

“The trust.”

Daniel nodded.

William had designed the safe so that destroying the company would trigger the Orchid Trust.

Every employee account.

Every hidden asset.

Every document.

Every piece of evidence.

It would automatically be released to the public.

Kane wanted to control the release.

Alexander understood.

“He wants the safe closed.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“Yes.”

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does.”

Alexander thought.

“If he can't access the money, he wants to make sure no one else can.”

Daniel nodded.

“So?”

“So we don't open the safe.”

Alexander stood.

“We make him think we will.”

Elena looked at him.

“What are you planning?”

Alexander looked at the television.

Richard Blake was speaking to reporters.

“Alexander Carter has lost control of his company.”

Alexander smiled.

“Then let's give him control.”

That afternoon, Alexander released a statement.

He announced that he would personally surrender the Carter Tower and all corporate assets to the board.

Richard celebrated immediately.

The media went wild.

Alexander appeared defeated.

Broken.

Finished.

Richard believed it.

Kane believed it.

Even the board believed it.

But underneath the tower, Alexander, Daniel, Elena, and Sofie entered the hidden chamber.

Sofie carried the bracelet.

Alexander carried the black drive.

Daniel carried the original hospital records.

They reached the safe.

Alexander looked at Sofie.

“Ready?”

She nodded.

She placed the bracelet against the hidden seam.

Click.

The safe opened one inch.

Then stopped.

Alexander frowned.

“That's it?”

Sofie shook her head.

“Wrong way.”

“What?”

“Turn it.”

Alexander turned the mechanism left.

Nothing.

Right.

Nothing.

Sofie stepped closer.

“Three.”

Alexander counted.

“One.”

“Two.”

“Three.”

She pressed.

The safe opened.

Inside was no gold.

No stacks of cash.

No diamonds.

Only an old wooden box.

Alexander lifted it.

Inside was a letter.

For the Carter family.

He opened it.

William had written:

The person who opens this safe is not the person I intended to save.

Alexander read slowly.

I intended to save whoever the Carter family harmed.

His eyes moved down.

The hundred million belongs to the people this company forgot.

Elena covered her mouth.

Daniel lowered his head.

William's final instruction was simple.

Give them the truth before you give them the money.

Alexander found a switch.

Below it:

PUBLIC RELEASE

And beside it:

FAMILY CONTROL

Two choices.

Daniel looked at him.

“Don't press family.”

Alexander stared.

“Why?”

“Because that's how Kane wins.”

Suddenly every light in the chamber turned red.

A voice echoed from above.

Richard.

“Alexander.”

Then another voice.

Kane.

“You have five minutes.”

Alexander looked at the screen.

A countdown appeared.

05:00

Daniel whispered:

“They hacked the tower.”

Alexander stared at the two buttons.

Public Release.

Family Control.

Then Sofie pointed to something between them.

A third button.

Almost invisible.

CHILD AUTHORIZATION.

Alexander looked at her.

“That's impossible.”

Sofie pressed it.

The screen changed.

ONE FINAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

The words appeared:

IDENTIFY THE HEIR.

May you like

Alexander stared.

Then the system displayed a photograph of Sofie.
