Chapter 5 - The Second Warning

The estate’s steel security doors had been designed to protect the people inside.
Now they had become a prison.
Rosa, Leo, and Mia were inside the mansion library when the first door slammed down over the entrance. Another sealed the windows. The lights changed from warm gold to emergency red.
Mia dropped her stuffed rabbit.
“Why did the doors close?”
Rosa rushed to the control panel.
The screen displayed a single message.
LOCKDOWN AUTHORIZED: ADRIAN VALE
She entered the emergency code Adrian had given her.
Access denied.
“Stay beside me,” she told the children.
Leo approached the library fireplace.
“Mr. Vale said the old rooms have servant passages.”
“That was a long time ago.”
“They might still be there.”
Before Rosa could answer, the ventilation system stopped.
A faint chemical odor entered the room.
Sharp.
Clean.
Like bleach.
Leo’s face changed.
“That’s what I smelled the night someone came into my bedroom.”
Rosa covered Mia’s mouth and nose with her sleeve.
“Get low.”
At Central Station, Adrian raced toward the waiting security vehicle.
Darius was already on the phone with the estate team.
“Main systems are unresponsive. Someone entered through a remote administrative channel.”
“Who has access?” Adrian demanded.
“You, me, and the system manufacturer.”
“Which manufacturer?”
Darius hesitated.
“Meridian Security.”
The company was supposedly closed.
Adrian climbed into the vehicle.
“Break the doors if you have to.”
“Reinforced steel won’t be quick.”
“Then find another way.”
Inside the library, Leo pulled books from the lowest shelf near the fireplace.
“What are you doing?” Rosa asked.
“Looking for cold air.”
He placed his hand along the wall.
At the shelter, Leo had learned that rats often entered through cracks where outside air moved. He searched for the same sensation.
Near the corner, a thin stream of cool air brushed his fingers.
“There.”
Rosa pushed against the panel.
Nothing moved.
Leo examined the carved wooden frame and noticed one raven-shaped decoration was more polished than the others.
He pressed it.
A section of the bookcase released with a quiet click.
Behind it was a narrow stone passage.
Rosa stared.
“How did you know?”
“I didn’t.”
The chemical smell grew stronger.
They entered the passage and pulled the hidden door closed behind them.
The tunnel was dark and filled with dust. Rosa used her phone flashlight as they moved downward through a steep staircase.
Mia began to cry.
“I want Mr. Vale.”
“He’s coming,” Leo said.
“You don’t know that.”
“He promised.”
At the bottom of the stairs, they reached an old wine cellar. A second door led into the underground garage.
But it was locked from the other side.
Leo noticed a small service hatch near the floor.
“I can fit.”
“No,” Rosa said.
“Mama, we can’t stay here.”
“You are not crawling into another dark place.”
“It’s the only way.”
Rosa wanted to refuse.
Then the mansion alarm changed tone.
A recorded voice announced that the air filtration system had been compromised.
Rosa kissed Leo’s forehead.
“Go straight to the garage control panel. Don’t stop for anything.”
Leo crawled through the hatch.
The metal tunnel scraped his elbows and knees. He heard machinery somewhere below and the distant sound of men shouting.
When he reached the other side, he pushed open a grate and dropped onto the garage floor.
Two security guards were trying to raise the main door manually.
“Leo!” one shouted.
“My mother and sister are trapped behind the cellar door.”
The guard followed him.
Seconds later, Rosa and Mia were freed.
Adrian’s vehicle entered the estate just as they emerged into the garage.
He jumped out before it stopped.
Mia ran into his arms.
“You came.”
Adrian held her tightly.
“Yes.”
Leo stood beside his mother, covered in dust.
Adrian looked at him.
“How did you escape?”
“I found a passage.”
Darius examined the boy’s bleeding elbow.
“You saved your family.”
Leo shook his head.
“My mother found the door.”
Rosa looked at him with exhausted pride.
“No, Leo. You did.”
Technicians restored the estate systems and confirmed that a chemical agent had been released into the library ventilation ducts. The concentration was not fatal, but prolonged exposure could have rendered everyone unconscious.
The attacker had not tried to kill them.
He had tried to take them.
“Why activate the doors?” Detective Chen asked.
“To prevent guards from reaching the library,” Darius replied. “Once the family lost consciousness, someone could enter through the passage.”
“Who knew the passage existed?”
Adrian considered the raven-shaped switch.
“My family.”
The original mansion had belonged to his grandfather. Every Vale child had explored the hidden corridors.
Including Jonathan.
Claire Dawson arrived shortly after midnight.
She immediately embraced Adrian.
“Thank God you’re alive.”
Adrian stepped away.
“How did you know the system had been accessed?”
“Our legal cybersecurity monitor flagged it.”
“Why does the legal department monitor my home?”
“Because the estate systems are owned by a corporate security subsidiary.”
Darius frowned.
“That alert should come to my office first.”
Claire looked at him.
“Apparently it didn’t.”
Adrian watched them both.
The circle of people he trusted was shrinking.
Rosa insisted the family leave the estate.
Adrian understood.
He moved them to a protected federal residence under Detective Chen’s supervision. Their location was shared with only five people.
Leo began attending a private school under another name.
On his third day, he disappeared.
His teacher said a security officer arrived with an official-looking authorization form claiming Adrian had been injured. Leo left with him willingly.
The man had a pale scar along his jaw.
By the time police issued an alert, the vehicle was gone.
Rosa collapsed when she heard.
“You promised to protect him!”
Adrian stood silently as her fists struck his chest.
“You brought us into this! You brought Daniel’s enemies back!”
“I will find him.”
“You don’t get to promise me anything again.”
Adrian did not defend himself.
He deserved every word.
Two hours later, his private phone rang.
No number appeared.
“Adrian Vale,” a man said.
The voice was calm and rough.
“Gabriel Reyes?”
“You’ve been looking for me.”
“Where is Leo?”
“Safe.”
“Let me speak to him.”
A pause.
Then Leo came on the line.
“Mr. Vale?”
“Leo, are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Did he threaten you?”
“No. He told me he’s my uncle.”
“Listen carefully. We’re going to bring you home.”
Gabriel returned to the phone.
“I did not take him to hurt him. Someone inside the federal protection team sold his location.”
“Then release him.”
“Not yet.”
“What do you want?”
“To show him the truth.”
“He is eight years old.”
“He is Daniel’s son. That already makes him older than he should be.”
Adrian gripped the phone.
“Did you cut my brakes?”
“Yes.”
The admission shocked him.
“Why?”
“Because I needed Leo to see me.”
“You could have killed me.”
“No. I cut the warning line and a secondary control cable. The main brakes still worked.”
“The police said—”
“The police saw what I wanted them to see.”
“Why make Leo stay outside all night?”
“I didn’t expect him to. I expected your security team to find the damage in the morning.”
“You endangered him.”
“I know.”
For the first time, regret entered Gabriel’s voice.
“I underestimated the boy.”
“Where is Daniel?”
“Alive.”
“Prove it.”
“You’ll have proof soon.”
“What do you want from me?”
“Stop trusting Victor Kane.”
“I already do.”
“Stop trusting Claire Dawson.”
Adrian looked through the glass wall of the federal command center.
Claire stood twenty feet away speaking with Detective Chen.
“She warned me about the estate breach.”
“Because she ordered it.”
Adrian felt the room shift around him.
“Why should I believe you?”
“Because Claire’s father founded Blackwing with yours.”
The line went silent for a moment.
Then Gabriel spoke again.
“Go to Vale Tower tomorrow at noon. Attend the board meeting. Do not cancel it.”
“Why?”
“Because they plan to remove you.”
Adrian stared at Claire.
“And if I refuse?”
“They will release evidence showing that your foundation funded illegal weapons research through homeless shelters.”
“That’s absurd.”
“It’s also convincing.”
“What does this have to do with Leo?”
“Everything.”
Gabriel ended the call.
A video arrived seconds later.
Leo sat inside a small room, unharmed. Across from him was a man with dark hair streaked with gray.
His wrists were chained to a metal table.
He slowly raised his face toward the camera.
Rosa screamed.
May you like
It was Daniel Reyes.
Alive.
