Chapter 11 - The Betrayal at Home
Leo read Gabriel’s message three times.
He had wanted his uncle to be a hero.
Gabriel had rescued him from the false security officer. He had helped stop Jonathan. He had nearly died beneath the relay chamber.
But Gabriel had also cut Adrian’s brake cables, used Leo as bait, and helped create the system that killed forty-three people.
Leo began to understand that adults could save someone and still be guilty.
They could love and betray in the same moment.
Gabriel disappeared from every surveillance system within twenty minutes of leaving the hospital.
Daniel believed he would search for Raven Zero before federal agents could find it.
“What is Raven Zero?” Adrian asked.
“A complete independent copy of the network,” Daniel said. “If Project Raven was destroyed, Zero could rebuild it.”
“Why didn’t you know where it was?”
“Gabriel handled physical deployment.”
Rosa stood near the window.
“Then he may have stayed close to us because he needed Daniel’s key.”
Daniel nodded reluctantly.
Leo looked at his father.
“Did Uncle Gabriel care about us?”
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
“Because he had opportunities to hurt you and didn’t.”
“That doesn’t prove he cared.”
No one could argue.
Adrian’s estate was no longer considered secure, so Rosa and the children remained inside a federal safe house.
Daniel was allowed to stay under supervision.
Family life did not return simply because he had returned.
At breakfast, he did not know Mia hated eggs.
He called Leo by the childhood nickname “Little Lion,” which Leo no longer remembered.
He reached automatically for a coffee cup Rosa had once used, unaware she had stopped drinking coffee years earlier after working overnight shifts.
Every small mistake revealed the distance between them.
Mia accepted him more easily.
She asked him to read bedtime stories and touch the scar on his face. She introduced him to her stuffed rabbit and explained every repair.
Leo remained guarded.
One evening, Daniel found him building a model car from spare parts Adrian had sent.
“The front axle is too heavy,” Daniel said.
Leo continued working.
“I know.”
“You can move the battery toward the back.”
“I was going to.”
Daniel sat on the floor.
“When I was your age, Gabriel and I built carts from broken lawn equipment.”
“Did he cheat?”
“Constantly.”
“Did you know he was bad?”
Daniel considered the word.
“Gabriel wasn’t born bad.”
“Neither was Jonathan.”
“No.”
“Then when does it happen?”
Daniel picked up a small wheel.
“Usually one decision at a time.”
Leo finally looked at him.
“What was your worst decision?”
“Believing I could fix Raven without telling anyone what it was.”
“Not leaving us?”
“That was the most painful decision. Keeping the secret was the worst. If I had spoken earlier, none of the rest might have happened.”
Leo returned to the car.
“Then stop keeping secrets.”
Daniel nodded.
“There’s one more.”
Rosa, standing in the doorway, heard him.
Daniel admitted that after escaping Jonathan five years earlier, he had met Gabriel repeatedly.
Together, they planned to recover the master key and expose Blackwing.
Daniel refused to contact his family, but he agreed to let Gabriel monitor them.
“Gabriel knew where we were the entire time?” Rosa asked.
“Yes.”
“Did he help us?”
“He arranged some of the anonymous donations.”
“He watched our children go hungry while waiting for a better moment?”
Daniel’s silence answered.
Rosa stepped back as if struck.
“You both became so obsessed with stopping powerful men that you forgot the people you claimed to protect.”
That night, the safe house lost power.
Backup generators failed.
Darius ordered everyone into the secure basement.
A vehicle crashed through the front gate.
Armed men entered.
This time, there was no chemical warning and no threatening note.
They had come to take the master key.
Federal agents exchanged gunfire in the hall.
Daniel moved Rosa and the children through a rear evacuation tunnel.
Halfway through, Mia realized she had left her rabbit upstairs.
“We can’t go back,” Rosa said.
“But Leo’s transmitter is inside.”
Leo stopped.
The transmitter installed at the factory remained hidden beneath the patch.
Darius had never removed it.
If the attackers knew, they could track the toy.
Daniel understood.
“The rabbit led them here.”
Mia began to cry.
“It’s my fault.”
“No,” Leo said. “It’s theirs.”
They continued toward an emergency vehicle waiting beyond the tunnel.
As they emerged, headlights blinded them.
A black SUV blocked the path.
Claire Dawson stepped out.
Rosa pulled the children behind her.
Claire held no weapon.
“You need to come with me.”
“You attacked the safe house,” Daniel said.
“No. Gabriel did.”
“Why should we believe you?”
“Because he took control of Blackwing’s remaining teams after Jonathan disappeared.”
Claire looked toward Leo.
“He needs Daniel alive. He needs you as leverage.”
“You betrayed Adrian,” Rosa said.
“Yes.”
“You helped them find Leo.”
“Yes.”
Claire did not ask for forgiveness.
“But Jonathan ordered my brother’s death twelve years ago. I spent years earning his trust so I could reach the archive.”
“You expect us to believe you were secretly good?” Daniel asked.
“No. I did terrible things for reasons I considered necessary. That does not make them good.”
She sounded like Daniel.
That frightened Rosa more than a lie would have.
Gunfire approached the tunnel entrance.
Claire opened the SUV door.
“Choose quickly.”
Daniel looked toward the dark road.
They had no safe direction.
He pushed Rosa and the children inside.
Claire drove away as armed men emerged behind them.
A bullet shattered the rear window.
Leo pulled Mia down.
“Where are you taking us?” Daniel demanded.
“To Adrian.”
“He’s at the federal command center.”
“No.”
Claire looked at him through the mirror.
“Adrian left two hours ago after receiving a message from Gabriel.”
Rosa’s heart stopped.
“What message?”
Claire handed Daniel a phone.
A video showed Gabriel standing beside a hospital bed.
Adrian’s elderly mother, Evelyn Vale, lay unconscious.
“If you want your mother alive,” Gabriel said, “come to the place where our fathers began.”
Daniel understood.
“The original Blackwing house.”
Claire nodded.
Rosa looked toward Leo.
“Where is it?”
Leo answered before anyone else.
“The mansion in the photograph.”
He remembered the banner behind Daniel, Gabriel, Victor, and Charles Vale.
Claire accelerated.
“The house has been abandoned for twenty years.”
Daniel stared at the video.
“No. That’s where Gabriel hid Raven Zero.”
