Chapter 13 - The Billionaire’s Choice

Claire Dawson’s entire life had been built around one death.

Her father, Detective Paul Mercer, had believed Daniel Reyes when everyone else saw only a corporate thief. He collected evidence linking Project Raven to Charles Vale and arranged a meeting with federal investigators.

The next morning, his brakes failed.

Claire was twenty-two.

She watched Blackwing officials attend the funeral, offer condolences, and quietly close the investigation.

She went to law school.

She joined a firm representing Vale Industries.

She earned Adrian’s trust.

Then Jonathan approached her.

He believed her father’s death had taught her to respect power.

Claire allowed him to believe it.

“I helped Blackwing destroy itself from within,” she said. “I gave Victor false reports. I convinced Jonathan Gabriel planned to betray him. I led you to the archive.”

“You also helped them target Leo,” Adrian said.

“I delayed every order against him.”

“You leaked his school location.”

“I sent Gabriel there first because Jonathan’s men were already coming.”

Leo remembered the false security officer.

Gabriel had taken him minutes before another vehicle arrived.

Claire’s actions had saved him.

They had also placed him inside the war.

“You could have gone to the authorities,” Daniel said.

“My father did.”

Claire’s grip tightened on the gun.

“He trusted the system. The system buried him.”

Detective Chen’s voice came from outside through a loudspeaker.

“Claire Dawson, the property is surrounded. Release the hostages.”

Claire ignored it.

“Activate Zero,” she told Adrian.

“No.”

“Then I release Raven’s emergency protocol.”

“You don’t have access.”

Gabriel looked at the console.

“She does.”

Claire had used Adrian’s legal department to obtain corporate credentials. She had secretly collected Jonathan’s voice recordings and Charles’s genetic records from old medical files.

She possessed two of the three required identities.

Only Adrian remained.

“What happens when you release the archive?” Adrian asked.

“Every record goes public.”

“Including unverified names?”

“Yes.”

“Including people threatened into cooperating?”

“They can explain themselves.”

“Including security locations, witnesses, and families?”

Claire hesitated.

Daniel saw it.

“The archive was not designed for justice. It contains everything. Addresses. Children’s names. Medical records. Intelligence operations.”

“The guilty hid behind privacy for decades.”

“And innocent people will die beside them,” Adrian said.

Claire’s face twisted.

“Innocent people already died.”

“Yes. But creating more graves will not open your father’s.”

The words struck her.

For one moment, the weapon lowered.

Gabriel moved.

He seized Claire’s wrist.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Daniel rushed toward the console.

Claire kicked Gabriel’s wounded side and broke free.

Adrian pulled Evelyn behind a steel pillar.

Rosa moved the children toward the exit.

Security shutters slammed down.

Claire had activated the emergency protocol.

A countdown appeared.

Sixty seconds.

“If Zero activates,” Daniel shouted, “the entire archive uploads and Raven rebuilds itself across every connected system.”

“Can you stop it?” Adrian asked.

“Only by destroying the identity bridge before authentication finishes.”

“Where?”

Daniel pointed to three glass cylinders beneath the console.

Each contained encrypted biometric modules.

Charles.

Jonathan.

Adrian.

The modules were protected by reinforced glass.

Gabriel grabbed a metal bar and struck the first cylinder.

It did not crack.

Claire aimed at him.

Leo threw Mia’s stuffed rabbit at her face.

The gun discharged into the floor.

Rosa pulled Claire backward.

They struggled.

Claire was stronger, but Rosa had spent years carrying children, laundry, boxes, and every burden life placed in her hands.

She drove Claire against the wall.

“You used my son.”

“So did everyone in this room,” Claire gasped.

Rosa struck her.

“That doesn’t make you right.”

Adrian took the gun.

Thirty seconds.

Daniel examined the biometric cylinders.

“They’re temperature protected.”

Leo remembered the factory cooling system.

“What happens if they get hot?”

“The modules erase themselves.”

Adrian looked toward the old heating pipes along the wall.

“Can we redirect steam?”

Daniel understood.

He opened an access panel while Leo crawled beneath the console.

“No,” Rosa said.

Leo looked back.

“I’m the only one small enough.”

Daniel reached for him.

Leo shook his head.

“You said stop keeping secrets. That means you have to trust me too.”

Ten seconds.

Leo squeezed between the cables and found the temperature valve.

“Turn it left!” Daniel shouted.

“It’s stuck.”

Gabriel dropped to the floor beside the opening.

“Use both hands.”

Leo pulled.

The valve did not move.

Five seconds.

Gabriel reached into the narrow space, his wounded arm barely fitting beside Leo’s.

Together, they turned it.

Steam burst through the pipes.

The biometric cylinders cracked.

The countdown stopped at one.

Every screen went black.

Raven Zero erased itself.

Claire stared at the dead console.

Twelve years of planning had ended in silence.

Federal agents breached the chamber minutes later.

Detective Chen placed Claire in handcuffs.

As she was led away, Claire looked toward Adrian.

“You will protect your family name again.”

“No,” Adrian said. “I’m going to end it.”

“What does that mean?”

“I will release the evidence through courts, investigators, and protected journalists. The guilty will be named. Witnesses will be shielded. Victims will be heard.”

“That will take years.”

“Yes.”

“My father waited for justice.”

“He deserved it.”

“He died without seeing it.”

Adrian looked toward Leo.

“Then we make certain the next child does.”

Gabriel sat against the wall while medics treated him.

Detective Chen approached with handcuffs.

“You understand that you are under arrest.”

“Yes.”

Leo stood nearby.

“Will he go to prison?”

Daniel knelt beside him.

“Probably.”

“But he helped us.”

“He also hurt people.”

Leo looked toward Gabriel.

His uncle did not ask for mercy.

“I watched you all night in the park,” Gabriel told him. “At first, I thought you would leave. Then I realized you were better than every man inside Blackwing.”

“Why didn’t you stop?”

“Because I had forgotten how.”

Leo’s eyes filled.

“Are you sorry?”

“Yes.”

“Does that fix it?”

“No.”

Detective Chen led Gabriel away.

As he passed Daniel, the brothers looked at each other.

“I envied you,” Gabriel said.

“For what?”

“You had somewhere you wanted to return.”

Daniel looked toward Rosa and the children.

“I almost lost it.”

“Don’t waste what remains.”

Gabriel disappeared into the rain.

Evelyn Vale confessed to causing Charles’s death and helping conceal Blackwing crimes. Because of her age and health, she was placed under medical supervision while prosecutors reviewed the case.

Adrian gave up control of Vale Industries.

He transferred his voting shares into an independent trust created to compensate victims of Project Raven.

The decision cost him most of the empire his family had built.

Reporters called it surrender.

Adrian called it repayment.

Three weeks later, Daniel’s criminal record was formally cleared.

But freedom did not restore his family.

Rosa allowed him to visit the children.

She did not ask him to return home.

One evening, Leo sat beside Adrian outside the temporary shelter.

“Are you still a billionaire?” he asked.

“Technically.”

“Will you always be one?”

“Probably not.”

“Are you scared?”

“Yes.”

Leo smiled slightly.

“But something else matters more.”

Adrian returned the smile.

“You remembered.”

A black car stopped across the street.

Darius stepped from it carrying a package recovered from Blackwing House.

Inside was one final recording.

Jonathan appeared on screen.

The date showed it had been created after the factory collapse.

He was alive.

“I told you,” Jonathan said, “our family is difficult to kill.”

May you like

Behind him stood a wall covered with photographs of Leo.

“And the boy still possesses something I need.”
