Chapter 10 - The Father in the Shadows
Gabriel survived surgery.
The bullet had passed beneath his ribs, missing his heart by less than an inch. Doctors kept him under guard inside a secure hospital wing.
Adrian also underwent surgery on his shoulder.
He refused strong pain medication until he had seen Leo.
The boy entered the hospital room carrying Mia’s stuffed rabbit.
One side was blackened by smoke.
“You kept it,” Adrian said.
“Mia would be mad if I lost it.”
Adrian smiled.
“Are you all right?”
Leo nodded automatically.
Then he shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
“That’s probably the honest answer.”
Leo sat near the bed.
“Was Jonathan your real brother?”
“Yes.”
“Did you love him?”
“When I was young.”
“Do you still?”
Adrian looked toward the rain against the window.
“I think part of me still loves the person I believed he was. But that person may never have existed.”
“My father is different from what I thought too.”
Daniel waited outside the room.
He had been cleared of immediate charges, but federal investigators still considered him a material witness and possible participant in Project Raven.
“Do you want him to come in?” Adrian asked.
Leo looked down at the rabbit.
“Yes.”
Daniel entered slowly.
He sat across from his son.
For several moments, they said nothing.
Finally, Leo asked, “Where were you for eight years?”
Daniel took a breath.
“After I recorded the message, Jonathan’s men captured me. They kept me in different locations and forced me to repair Raven’s code.”
“For eight years?”
“For three.”
“What happened after that?”
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I escaped.”
Leo stared at him.
“You were free for five years?”
“Not completely. Blackwing watched your mother. Whenever I moved closer, someone followed me.”
“You could have called.”
“I believed any contact would put you in danger.”
“You visited the shelter.”
Daniel glanced toward Adrian.
“You found the photograph.”
“Why didn’t you come inside?”
“I stood across the street for two hours.”
“That isn’t the same.”
“No.”
“Did you see us sleeping there?”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“And you left?”
“Yes.”
Leo stood abruptly.
“You were scared.”
“I was.”
“You always said brave people decide something else matters more.”
Daniel’s face broke.
“I failed my own words.”
Leo walked toward the door.
Daniel did not stop him.
Outside, Rosa had heard everything.
She entered after Leo left.
“You watched us?” she asked.
Daniel nodded.
“Five winters?”
“I sent money through Eleanor.”
“Not enough.”
“I know.”
“You saw your son wearing shoes held together with tape?”
“Yes.”
“You saw Mia sick?”
“I paid the clinic anonymously.”
“She needed her father.”
“I thought Jonathan would kill them if I returned.”
“And maybe you were right. But you made that choice alone.”
Daniel lowered his head.
Rosa removed her wedding ring from a chain around her neck.
“I kept this because I believed you had died trying to come home.”
She placed it in his hand.
“I don’t know who you are now.”
Neither did Daniel.
The investigation into Blackwing expanded rapidly.
The factory archive contained names of judges, executives, military contractors, and elected officials. Arrests began across several states.
Victor Kane accepted a plea agreement and agreed to testify.
Claire Dawson refused.
She claimed Jonathan had threatened her daughter, though investigators discovered she had no daughter.
The lie revealed how easily deception had become part of her identity.
Adrian gave a public statement from the hospital.
He admitted Vale Industries had participated in illegal technology development under previous leadership. He also admitted that he had failed to investigate Daniel Reyes fairly.
“The power of a company does not make its conclusions true,” he said. “Eight years ago, I allowed speed, fear, and reputation to matter more than one man’s right to justice. Daniel Reyes deserved better. His family deserved better.”
Vale Industries stock collapsed.
Shareholders filed lawsuits.
Adrian lost billions in two days.
He did not regret the statement.
The mystery of Gabriel’s final word remained.
Shelters.
Investigators searched properties funded by the Vale Foundation. Most had once belonged to Meridian subsidiaries.
Behind walls and beneath floors, they discovered hidden servers containing encrypted Blackwing archives.
Charles Vale had used charitable property purchases to conceal evidence after deciding to shut down Raven.
That revelation changed Adrian’s understanding of his father.
Charles had approved the project and profited from it.
Later, guilt made him attempt to destroy it.
He had funded shelters not only to help the poor but also to hide the proof of his crimes.
Compassion and cowardice had existed inside him at the same time.
The final server was believed to be beneath the Mercer Street Shelter.
Workers entered the burned basement.
They discovered a sealed elevator hidden behind a concrete wall.
It descended three floors below ground.
Adrian, Daniel, Detective Chen, and federal agents entered.
At the bottom was a vast archive.
Rows of servers remained active.
A video file began playing automatically.
Charles Vale appeared.
He was older than Adrian remembered him.
“If this archive has been discovered,” he said, “then either I found the courage to confess or my sons finished destroying one another.”
Adrian watched in silence.
Charles admitted authorizing Project Raven after being promised government contracts. He described Jonathan’s growing obsession with control and Daniel’s attempt to expose the system.
Then he revealed the truth about the false theft case.
“Daniel Reyes did not steal from Vale Industries. I ordered Victor Kane to create the evidence against him.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I believed prison would keep Daniel alive and silence him. Jonathan chose another solution. By the time I understood what he planned, Daniel had disappeared.”
Charles looked directly into the camera.
“Adrian knew nothing. I kept him away because he questioned too much. Jonathan considered kindness weakness. I considered it useful innocence.”
Adrian felt sick.
His father had not trusted his conscience.
He had used it as a shield.
The video continued.
“There is one truth Daniel does not know. Gabriel did not join Project Raven to expose Jonathan.”
Gabriel’s military records appeared.
“He was the first person Jonathan recruited.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“No.”
“Gabriel designed Raven’s remote infiltration methods. He approved the early field tests. He only turned against Jonathan after discovering Jonathan planned to eliminate him.”
The chamber became silent.
Gabriel had presented himself as a compromised investigator.
In reality, he had helped create the criminal operation.
Charles’s final message appeared.
“The network contains a hidden backup called Raven Zero. It cannot be activated by the master key. Only Gabriel knows where it is.”
The video ended.
Detective Chen immediately contacted the hospital.
Gabriel’s room was empty.
The guard outside had been sedated.
On the bed lay a black feather.
